Surly's flagship beer pours a beautifully deep reddish gold that screams DRINK ME NOW! at the top of its lungs. Guava, mangoes, peaches are all present in the wonderful nose. Doesn't quite taste as good as it smells but I found that to be the case with a few of Surly's beers. The beer gets much more complex and flavorful as it warms, so try not to drink this one ice cold. Lightly carbonated and refreshing and at 90 IBU's has the perfect amount of bitterness.

A truly fine IPA.

Appearance - Aggressive pour yielded a 3 finger head. Great lacing throughout and a pillow of foam remained the whole time. Deep amber in color, much darker than your standard IPA - must be the Scottish malt. Hazy.

Smell - Piney hops and bready malt.

Taste - Bitter piney hops with a hint of orange citrus. Some caramel malts. Pine makes another appearance on the finish.

Mouth feel - Medium carbonation and a slightly dry finish. It leaves you wanting another sip.

Overall - Probably my 2nd favorite Surly beer (in a can) next to Abrasive. Dangerously drinkable and a unique IPA. A must try

Reddish color that always thrills. Foam does not persist long. A bit of chill haze also doesn't last. I perhaps didn't linger long enough on the aroma as I don't recall it. Taste was quite nice with a balance of crystal sweetness to stand up to assertive bitterness and complement fruity hop character. The body of the beer is a little heavy and the abc is higher than my sweet spot. Still, this seemed like a great pairing with what would otherwise have been an over spiced peppery jambalaya.

From a 16 oz can (dated October 17, 2013) into a tulip.

A-A slightly aggressive pour produces nearly three fingers of dense, pillowy foam. The head is light tan in color and hangs around for a bit, maybe two minutes, before leaving some chunky lacing on the glass as it dissipates. The beer is a dark-hued amber color and slightly hazy.

S-The smell is full of juicy, almost tangy, citrus like grapefruit and orange. There is a bit of peppery spice, as well. The hops are balanced by a light whiff of toast and biscuit. Bitterness is strong, but nicely balanced.

T-The taste is not as bright and citrusy as the smell (which isn't surprising given the age of this can), but the complex hoppy bitterness is still quite impressive with orange, grapefruit, floral notes, and light peppery spice. The hops are balanced by dry toast malts that are mostly overwhelmed, but provide enough oomph to keep the beer from devolving into a bitter mess.

M-The feel is medium to full body for the style with a nice, moderate level of carbonation. The carbonation is fine and smooth, and it compliments the light dankness of the hop oil.

O-This is my second beer from Surly and it is another huge winner. It is good looking, smells great, tastes good, and has a great feel. For a beer with only 6.2% ABV, this thing drinks like a IIPA with 1.5 times the alcohol. Unlike other hugely hopped beers in the lower ABV strata, this one doesn't get harsh or vegetal. I would love to try a fresh example in the future...guess I'll have to get to Minnesota.

Appearance - Poured nearly 2 fingers of off white light amber colored foam, the body is a slightly hazed brilliant deep amber, just a gorgeous beer. Lacing is pretty good.

Smell - Wonderful hop aromas of citrus, grapefruit, and lots of pine. There is a slight whiff of tropical sweetness and very faint carmel.

Taste - Starts with semi-sweet citrus and grapefruit, which quickly transitions to citrus orange peel, grapefruit pith and pine. While sipping you will get an occasional burst of semi-sweet tropical fruit. Finishes with dry citrus pith, and pine/herbal hop resins.

Mouthfeel - About medium mouthfeel, bold flavors fill the mouth and the nose, carb is lower side of medium, which gives this beer a smoothness that borders on creamy - extraordinarily drinkable. Even with the sharper pine nuances on the finish, there is still a juiciness that is present - really nice.

Overall - This is an excellent ipa, extraordinarily complex and balanced. Great bold hop flavors, smooth as silk, and very drinkable - one of the best representations of the style imo.

16oz Can > 2XIPA Glass

A - Hazed amber with 1.5 finger foamy off white head with some good lacing.
S - Very big on dank pine, some light tropical notes underneath, a little peach, grapefruit, grassy.
T - This thing is huge on pine in flavor, some nice crackery malt base, very dank and grassy mid to end, some light mango and papaya popping up here and there.
M - Best thing about this is its totally refreshing, I coulda crushed this can without a problem, Clean, just bitter enough but goes down great.
O - Excellent IPA, not could benefit from just a tad more sweetness. I wish i had more access to this, but I'm privileged to have had it.

Appearance: Pours with a heavy thickness for an IPA with a ruby red color. Above half a finger of head on the pour which was present while drinking. Sticky lacing left behind with each drink. What I really love about this brew is the suspended sediment with this brew, even ultra fresh. Part of the beer and it looks awesome.

Smell: A ton of malty sweetness jumps out right away. Caramel, molasses, maple syrup, a sugar. Earthy, medium to heavy hop body evens out the sweetness. The aroma is so potent and upfront and yet finds a way to be wonderfully balanced and delicious.

Taste: Sweet malt body like the aroma presents itself up front. Brown sugar, sticky molasses, and rounded caramel attack that palate. Once they run their course, a seem less transition is made to a lingering bitterness of punishing hops blasts through. The sweetness of this brew continues to shine through on the aftertaste with plenty of hop bitterness sticking around.

Mouthfeel: Probably the heaviest mouthfeels of thick malty tones and bitter hops I have ever had out of a single IPA.

Overall: An amazing single IPA. As much complexity, taste, and aroma as any IPA out there, doubles and triples included. My first Surly offering and needless to say I look forward to much more.
