Big thanks to Mista for the extra!

A: dark orange with a thick off white head that gives way to covering lacing.

S: pineapple and citrus hops dominate the smell entirely. Slight pine scent too.

T: bitterness is huge along with the hop presence that is mostly pine here. Malt takes a back seat entirely.

M: crisp, well carbonated, and medium-light body

O: tasty beer, would happily have it again. I was slightly disappointed in the taste given expectations, but no IPAs blow me away anymore, unfortunately.

A. Caramel color and hazy, with a good amount of sediment and few big bubbles (extremely small bubbles). Big head and tons of lacing.

S. Mild celery kind of scent.

T. Wow, that's an interesting taste. It has a rye feel to it, some dark fruit flavor. Nice floral hoppy flavor. I find it to be a very complex taste for an IPA.

M. Nice tingly hoppy bitter.

O. This is simply sensational. I find it to be much better than Surly's Abrasive Ale, which is also excellent.

This beer makes an appearance in my fridge at least once a week. I chose to review a can that has about four weeks on it because that's realistically about the average batch you'll find at most metro liquor stores on any given day.

Poured from 16oz can to Surly pint:

Pours a still, hazy amber gold with a swelling frothy head - off-white, pushing a very light brown. Precise lacing.

Smell and taste:

There is an obvious malt backbone of caramel and dark syrup that supports a splendid hop profile. Pine tree notes are most obvious but there is a clear citrus presence as well. The beer finishes with a dry orange peel bitterness. You'll find a more dominant hop bite from a super fresh can but this one certainly does the job.

What a perfect flagship beer this is.

finally taking the chance to review this amazing IPA from Surly. I love this brewery

A- Furious pours a gorgeous amber body with a massive white head of foam all over the glass. A reddish glow illuminates off the glass as the lacing remains a frosting layer on the sides of the glass

S- what a blast of piney and resinous hoppiness!!! There is a caramel malt scent that is parallel to the hops making it extremely balanced for such a hop fest. Furious really has a dank hop scent that is massive and impressive!

T- the sweet caramel and pine flavors are so intense and full of flavor that your mind is completely drawn away from the bitter flavors that follow. You will quickly be drawn to that flavor as it ends up being an excelllent finishing point. Delicious ipa

M- flavor all over the mouth. Coating and good with flavor

O- I wish I could have Surly brews all the time. Furious is one of the only ipa I have ever had that was able to keep balance between piney hops and caramel malt to complete a perfect marriage. I always want my ipa's to be all about the hops, but Surly made a brew that changes my mind. Simply put... THE BEST IPA IN THE WORLD THAT BALANCES BOTH. Well done Surly

Poured from a 16oz can into a pint glass. Super fresh (canned two days earlier)...

ECE/SAE amber body, clear with tangerine highlights, capped by a fat creamy finger of off white foam. Superior retention, thick lacing.

Superb aromatics suggest a wide variety of citrus, candied ginger, mint, and other juicy hop notes.

Aggressive hops dominate the flavor profile without creating an overwhelming bitterness. Citrus and pine are joined by an herbaceous wave of secondary notes. Bright crisp malt and a touch of caramel add some balance, but on the whole this is clearly a West Coast inspired offering. Tart/crisp/dry finish.

Light-bodied, well carbonated, smooth, with a slight impression of oiliness from hops.

An excellent, potent, hop-forward, flavorful IPA - on par with most of the better offerings from SoCal.

A - Just from the look of it I could tell this beer was going to be a dank hop experience. A dark amber brown with a 1/2 inch of the bubbly stuff and tons of micro floats in the glass.

S - Dank resinous hops next to some roasted and caramel malts. To sum up assertive.

T - Well its bitter and doesn't drink very well when its warmed up a bit but I could see how people could love it. It's border line resinous but the malts do their best in making it a tolerable drinking experience. The roasted malts were pretty interesting in the mix.

M - Light to medium but hops were kind of out of whack.

Overall I just don't see how people could love this beer. It does pack a lot of punch for a low volume IPA but it really doesn't seem worth the high praise. Not worth the premium I paid on the grey market.

Beer poured from can into a Nonic shaped pint glass

A - Beer pours with an opaque dark brown colored body; lots of floating yeast; head is creme in color and forms a frothy one finger size head; holds very well; forms a nice layer of lacing around the edge of the glass; appears a little viscous

S - Few smells really stand out in this beer, one being pine and the other a smooth scotch; hop and pine; hints of caramel and nice roasted malt notes; floral nose comes up after the beer warms up

T - Starts with a smooth roasted malt taste, then caramel and a bit of scotch, flavor profile finishes off with a bitter of hop sourness; great taste; hop pine lingers for a while after; yeast; light liquor taste

M - Bitter pine aftertaste; creamy, not very effervescent

D - Beer is fantastic; you can taste each flavor characteristic in the beer, from start to finish; highly recommended, I think I'll have another

Poured from tall boy dated may 7 into Sammy smiths tulip.
Appearance is light clear copper with a nice head but that's not what catches my attention first. Damn this beer smells good! The aroma is reminiscent of some very kind buds. Very piney with some citrus as well, pure hops. The taste follows suit, very dry, hoppy, just plain delicious. Mouthfeel is fairly resinous, crisp. Overall this beer was amazing. Extremely hoppy, not sweet at all refreshing, and also sessionable. My first beer from surly and I will definitely be seeking more
