Poured from a 16oz. can into a Duvel tulip.

Cloudy amber with a copper tint, lots of tiny floaties. Small bubbly 1" off white head which quickly reduced to a nice ringed cap that continued to the end with some lacing.

Smells like tropical citrus, slight malt, earthy pine and hops.

Taste is rich caramel malt which fades to the back, mango, grapefruit, lemon zest, grassy pine and bitter hops that linger for a long while after, this is hop heaven…YUM! Alcohol is hidden well.

Mouthfeel is a bit slick, crisp and a drying bitter finish with moderate carbonation.

Overall: I immediately want more! So crisp/clean/refreshing, amazing balance, well done Surly, well done. Only thing I don't like about this one…it is not distributed here! Thanks Yamar68. Highly recommended.

Pours a murky burnt Orange color with a nice dense off-white head. Outstanding head retention, which leads to good lacing. Sweet citrus aromas with a hint of spruce. Hops control the palate with bitter citrus flavors with some evergreen tones. The sweet malts balance out the bitterness perfectly. Mild carbonation with a smooth and clean backbone. Very complex palate for an IPA. Nice and crisp with a dry finish. Very nice drinking IPA. Surly Is making amazing beer....and in cans no less!

the amirillo stands out in this beer, taste little of edleberry, citrus, and lots of hops, hard to get this beer in new england, so will take a trip to find this one again, one of my top beers to have in my fridge (next to the heady toppers). WOW and it comes from a can too.

A: Murky reddish orange, very carbonated. Light tan head that leaves strong lacing behind.

S: Heavy piney hops. A little grapefruit in there too, adding some sweetness.

T/M: Very bitter, lots of intense hop flavor right up front. Pine is the dominant character, but there are also undercurrents of grapefruit/citrus and some earthy/grassy flavors. The initial bitterness gives way to a slightly sweeter taste, and it goes down really smooth and creamy.

O: Just a delicious, very strong IPA, heavy on the hops. A bitter, biting, intense example of its style.

Got this one in a trade from a great midwestern BA'er. Many thanks!

Canned 3/7/2012
Poured a murky brown that was vitrually non-translucent with a floatie debris field throughout! Produced a small eggshell white head that fleeted to an inconsistent lacy layer around the glass. It has a respectable citrus aroma but heavy on the piney side of the hop spectrum. Malts? If existent, I'm not noticing much. Tastes are, well, pretty damn hoppy. A great amount of bitterness. For a hophead, my lips are sizzlin' and who's complaining? Not this guy. As in scent, malts are vague. The mouthfeel is excellent! This reminds of a Mikkell "1000 BU" brew or the like. The 6.20% abv is alarmingly low. This could easily pass as an 8%+! Great beer. I think I like it a bit better than the Surly I tried, understandably they are slightly different styles. Worth a try!

Cheers!

I had this beer in a bar and given my scores compared to everyone elses, I must have had something else?....but I double checked and the waitress insured me it was Furious.

This beer had the appearance of "mudwater", I half expected to see a carp in the glass. I see now why it is packaged in a can.

I love a very hoppy beer and generally put 8-10oz of Centennial in my 5 gallon batches of American Ale. Sure, this beer was heavily hopped, but the hops did not complement one another nor did it complement the beer.

The malt in the beer seemed weak/watered down, there was very little "mouth feel" for a beer with such a high ether content.

The taste and smell was like old gym socks as a result of an improper yeast/hop/malt combination....or there was contamination in the brewing cycle.

I've brewed since the mid 80's and sure I have made some creative disasters myself. In my life I have refused to drink 2 commercial beers, one was a Miller someone bought me and the other was this Surley Furious. Want a good hoppy beer, try a bells Two Hearted Ale, or better yet, make your own :-)
