fresh can via trade with samtallica, bottled on 1/11/12

pours a lovely pale hue into my cheater pint capped by a small unwaivering off white head, Nose is full of pine, pineapple, and grapefruit, slight hint of alcohol. Cutting bitterness and citrus upfront are slightly washed away slick maltiness. Faint hint of caramel. Taste feels like a bit of a let down when campared with the aroma. medium bodied, this is a solid IPA.

Thanks to DarthKostrizer for sharing...
Clear Caramel-ruby. Nice 1 finger eggshell colored head. Great retention and lacing.

Great nose with bright citrus. Tropical fruit and pineapple with a mild balanced sweet caramel malt.

Flavor is nice but is no where near as good as the nose. Mild citrus and floral hops are nice. Lacking a bright solid finish.

Light and crisp high carb.

Good solid IPA but overall a little bit of a let down. Really fell flat on the backend.

Canned 1/11 and drank on 1/31

Big Thanks to StPaulSuds for this one and especially for the Abrasive!

A - Cherry red poured into a Guinness perfect pint glass. Good head retention, so so activation and lacing. I'm not used to that color in regards to most IPAs but that by no means took away from this score.

S - Subdued cold but opens up nicely as it warms. Earthy pine, the grapefruit I detect is moreso ruby red and Pineapple. Caramel malt most def there as well. I'd guess that this is equally heavy on the malt as it is the hops.

T - Matches nose pretty damn well. I'm glad this beer is fresh. I'd bet this becomes a malt bomb after 2 months or so. Just as heavy on the caramel and nutty malt as the citrus hops which is why I scored it 3.5. The citrus could have been brighter and I felt the malt played too big of a role here.

M - The only other single IPAs I've had this bitter is Wipeout and GF West Coast IPA. I could see where it could be too bitter for some but I liked it. At 99 IBU's I can see why they decided to name a single IPA Furious.

O - Good beer here but nothing to go crazy over. Just a wee bit above average when it comes to readily available single IPAs. Abrasive on the other hand...that's the one that impressed me for the DIPA style.

Poured from a 16oz can into a new belgium globe. Pours a deep dark muddy brown/orange with a couple fingers of slightly off-white, fluffy head. The aroma has some pine and grapefruit notes. The taste has a nice balance of pine, orange, grapefruit, and malts. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and refreshing, with a good amount of carbonation, and a very smooth and crisp taste.

A quality IPA from Surly, I'll have to try some of their other beers, including their DIPA. This is my first Surly (and my first IPA from a can), and I'm impressed.

thanks to darthkostrizer for opening it at a bottle share.

rust in color with a small white head that dissipated quickly leaving minimal lacing

decent aroma, i get some mangos/floral

taste not to much here, mildly foral and hoppy with mangos

light bodied medium carbonation, leave a dry mouth.

overall the nose was the best part of this beer, wasn't much in the taste. a bit of a let down here

Stoked to try this through a recent trade.

A: Color is deep red to light brown. How does this fall under the American IPA category there is nothing Pale about it? 1 finger head quickly faded and left nice lacing.

S: Mild, malty mixed with hops, fruity

T: The hop flavor is there but the nutty and malty characteristic was much higher than I was expecting for this style of beer. If Indian brown ale were a style this would probably be the flagship beer for that style.

F: Crisp and smooth

O: A little disappointed... Color and flavor doesn't match what an AIPA should be. Great beer if I had no expectation and if I didn't try to taste it in the context of its category.

from 16oz can:

A: murky golden, brown with white head that fades quickly. 3.5

S: mmhops. pine, spruce, citrus, honey malt sweetness, and then more hops. 4

T: grapefruit hop bitterness, a bit of pineapple, then some caramel/honey malt sweetness. either a big ipa or a faded dipa. lots of bitterness and lots of the same flavors as from the smells. 4

M: medium bodied, foamy but not astringent, easy drinking. 3.5

O: decent ipa, esp from a can. a bit one dimensional but nicely done overall 4.0

Received as an extra from fourisbetter. Love the Surly, thanks!

Canned on 1/21/11. Reddish-gold body with a bunch of suspended particles. I did store the can on its side in the fridge, but this is a bit ridiculous. Nice frothy two fingers of yellowish head.

Nose is malt and piney hops. Rich and complex.

Wow, flavor is intense for 6.2%! Somewhat heavier on the malt than I prefer, but fully balanced (and then some) with hop bitterness on the finish.

Mouthfeel is thick and rich. Chewy. Love the creamy and thick body on this one.

A really good chewy and tasty IPA. I can see why this is a MN staple. Another big winner for Surly.
