Had this many times, reviewing a tap pour from Sawatdee at lunch with spicy papaya salad.

A: Slightly hazy orange tinted amber with a nice fluffy white head. Tons of lacing tells me this is one sticky beer.

S: Hop assault brings lots of pine and slightly sweet pink grapefruit and bitterness. Not much malt here.

T: Tons of resinous pine hops, orange peel, sweet citrus fruit and a slightly sweet malt presence to smooth things out. There is some seriously bold flavor here, and nothing fades or becomes too one dimensional. While not overly complex, everything is spot on and holds together very well sip after sip (gulp).

M: Very sticky hops cut nicely by sharp carbonation and a very solid body. Tons of hop bitterness as the aftertaste sets in, particularly on the back of the tongue. Doesn't leave you dry, and the flavors really stick around for a while.

O: Having had this beer on a somewhat regular occasion for several years, it is never a letdown. This is an excellent example of a hopped up beer, executing the style with absolute precision. It is very difficult to not order another one.

Look: Copper in color with a 1/4 inch white head and no retention

Smell: Grapefruit and other citrus notes

Taste: Again some nice grapefruit notes with some caramel and toffee in the background

Mouthfeel: Just under medium body and medium carbonation

Overall: A good midwest IPA but good by west coast standards

Big thanks to cradke for this one!

It pours a really nice medium to dark amber color that’s fairly clear but a bit hazy. A nice big bone colored head sits atop the beer with really great retention and superb lacing. The aroma just bursts out of the glass, citrus rind, earthy pine and a big malt backbone, caramel, toffee some sweeter and lighter biscuity grain comes through as well. Big aggressive flavors lead off with a citrus bouquet, some grassy and dirty pine flavors are very prominent, but the malt is really potent, and it is spot on. Nice caramel and toffee notes, meaty grain flavors that really compliment the more grassy and coniferous hoppy elements, a really well balanced flavor profile. The body is really great, a bit bigger than a lot of IPAs, but has a great dry bitter finish.

Verdict: Excellent IPA from Surly, really potent and delicious malt profile that balances so well with the bitter hops. I could definitely go through a few of these pretty quickly.

A 16 ounce can born on 12/28/2011 and drank today, just over a month out. Sent by inlimbo77; thank you! Poured into a DFH signature glass.

Pours a rich, hazy copper color with scattered blood orange hues. About an inch of foamy, almost frothy, off-white head develops; decent retention, but gobs of sticky lacing.

Aroma is of spicy hops, pine sap, orange and grapefruit citrus, freshly cut lawn, some hay, and some light, floral hops. Lots of hops, no doubt that it’s an IPA (and a good one at that).

Taste is similar, beginning with the bitter, pine-resin hops before breaking way into the citrus notes, grass, and light grains. The spicy hops are prevalent throughout, but more pronounced at the end with a nice bitter finish.

Mouthfeel is great; crisp, flavorful, bitter - but not overly so - and refreshing. A touch dry on the finish, but that is a petty squabble.

Overall, an outstanding IPA that seems very well balanced and embodies what the style can be.

fresh can via trade with samtallica, bottled on 1/11/12

pours a lovely pale hue into my cheater pint capped by a small unwaivering off white head, Nose is full of pine, pineapple, and grapefruit, slight hint of alcohol. Cutting bitterness and citrus upfront are slightly washed away slick maltiness. Faint hint of caramel. Taste feels like a bit of a let down when campared with the aroma. medium bodied, this is a solid IPA.

Thanks to DarthKostrizer for sharing...
Clear Caramel-ruby. Nice 1 finger eggshell colored head. Great retention and lacing.

Great nose with bright citrus. Tropical fruit and pineapple with a mild balanced sweet caramel malt.

Flavor is nice but is no where near as good as the nose. Mild citrus and floral hops are nice. Lacking a bright solid finish.

Light and crisp high carb.

Good solid IPA but overall a little bit of a let down. Really fell flat on the backend.

Canned 1/11 and drank on 1/31

Big Thanks to StPaulSuds for this one and especially for the Abrasive!

A - Cherry red poured into a Guinness perfect pint glass. Good head retention, so so activation and lacing. I'm not used to that color in regards to most IPAs but that by no means took away from this score.

S - Subdued cold but opens up nicely as it warms. Earthy pine, the grapefruit I detect is moreso ruby red and Pineapple. Caramel malt most def there as well. I'd guess that this is equally heavy on the malt as it is the hops.

T - Matches nose pretty damn well. I'm glad this beer is fresh. I'd bet this becomes a malt bomb after 2 months or so. Just as heavy on the caramel and nutty malt as the citrus hops which is why I scored it 3.5. The citrus could have been brighter and I felt the malt played too big of a role here.

M - The only other single IPAs I've had this bitter is Wipeout and GF West Coast IPA. I could see where it could be too bitter for some but I liked it. At 99 IBU's I can see why they decided to name a single IPA Furious.

O - Good beer here but nothing to go crazy over. Just a wee bit above average when it comes to readily available single IPAs. Abrasive on the other hand...that's the one that impressed me for the DIPA style.
