Received as an extra from fourisbetter. Love the Surly, thanks!

Canned on 1/21/11. Reddish-gold body with a bunch of suspended particles. I did store the can on its side in the fridge, but this is a bit ridiculous. Nice frothy two fingers of yellowish head.

Nose is malt and piney hops. Rich and complex.

Wow, flavor is intense for 6.2%! Somewhat heavier on the malt than I prefer, but fully balanced (and then some) with hop bitterness on the finish.

Mouthfeel is thick and rich. Chewy. Love the creamy and thick body on this one.

A really good chewy and tasty IPA. I can see why this is a MN staple. Another big winner for Surly.

Appearance: Very dark for an IPA. Crimson and amber. Pours a great head with some streaming carbonation from the bottom.

Smell: Lots of pine, some orange and other citrus notes.

Taste: Lots of bitter hops up front with a great malt backbone. Starts bitter but ends with some great sweet notes. The malt vs. hop profile is really spot on for an IPA. A little bit of alcohol but it compliments the bitter hop profile well.

Mouthfeel: Really great mouthfeel. A good amount of carbonation. Very light, almost foamy. Definitely one of the highlights of the beer.

Overall: A great IPA. I enjoyed the great hop profile but equally enjoyed its unique malt profile. The mouthfeel is fantastic and the beer evolves in the glass. There is a great sweetness at the end that lingers in the palate.

Surly Furious is a delicious American IPA. Fragrant and hoppy with a malty base to balance. One of the best American IPAs I've ever had.

A: Clear orange red colour and a huge 15 mm head that lasts really well. 5

S: Quite hoppy with both floral and grassy characteristics. Smells good. Not super strong, but good. 4.5

T: Malty with some sweet tropical fruit characteristics. There is also a nice grassy hop base. There is a great balance between malt and hops. 4

M: Foamy. 4

O: 4.5

Poured from a tall can into a tumbler. Canned date 1-4-12, bought from my local bottle shop, what in CA? Yes. Thanks Jazz!

A- Pours a brilliant amber color, semi-hazy but on the clear side. A light yellow half finger head with surprising retention after a somewhat vigorous pour. Lacing all down the glass.

S- Smells of a pine forest. Tree sap, pine needles, tree bark. The obvious citrus is there, floral hops, but not as prominent as the pine. The darker specialty malts that are apparent by looking at the beer make an impression on the nose as well. A very minuscule amount of darker lovibond malts reminiscent of trail mix/grain cereal are past the extreme hop aromas.

T- Front palate is very little sweetness, heavy on the hops, bitter, citrus, maybe a little tartness. Mid palate is less on the bitter and more on the malts. The hop bitterness and the specialty malts are battling it out in my mouth, im not complaining. Back end is raisin bran. The aftertaste is rasin bran. I like it.

M- Slick mouthfeel, high drinkability, I could session this beer all day. Good carbonation for the style.

O- This beer is a prime example of why i live Surly. They make absolutely amazing beers and i am bummed that i dont get to drink it more often.
