To me, Coffee Bender show the potential of two exciting developments in coffee beer.
One is the use of cold pressed coffee instead of the traditional hot brewed variety most of us start the day with. By soaking grounds in cool water for an extended period of time an excellent flavor and aroma can be achieved without the acidity or bitterness of typical coffee. These are characteristics I love in my coffee, but occasionally find off putting in coffee beers.
The second is the use of Surly's extraordinary brown ale as a base rather than a porter or stout like we are used to for most coffee beers. Much like the use of cold pressed coffee, this allows for a smoother, more balanced beer that allows the pure coffee flavors to truly shine.
So yeah, I'm a big fan of this beer. Superb coffee notes, but not overly coffee flavored or too bitter. A session coffee beer so to speak.
