Pours a ruddy brown, very stock with some caramel colored head of maybe a finger following a smooth pour from the can. Little dots of lacing and sub standard retention.

Cocoa powder backed with a warm nuttiness and coffee grinds. Pleasantly sweet with a bit of molasses and maple syrup.

Roch doughy malt with a equal blend of cocoa and coffee grounds. Some pine hop bitterness that gets kicked up a notch by some roasted coffee flavor that stays after the finish. The coffee is very well delivered.

Smooth almost creamy, medium bodied with decent carbonation.

Terrific beer by Surly, the coffee really comes through enhancing an under appreciated style. The balance is held throughout as the bitterness of the coffee delivers just as the caramel and chocolate tone become too sweet. Would be happy to crack another one soon.

16oz can
Served in a perfect pint glass

A - It pours a ruddy brown color. An aggressive pour yields three fingers of beige head.

S - The aroma is fresh ground coffee.

T - The taste is predominantly coffee. The is a bitter, black coffee finish.

M - Moderate to thin

O - This is an interesting beer. It has tons of coffee flavor, but it is thinner than most coffee flavored beers. I like the taste except for the finish. It is bitter, and that bitterness lingers on the palate. I'm glad I tried it but not overly impressed. I prefer the coffee stouts and porters.

Poured into a FFF / Intelligentsia mug

A - Medium brown with a one finger mocha colored head that sits on top like foam on a Cappucino.

S - Roasted coffee with a hint of cream sweetness. Do pick up a bit of the hops and orange peel that I thought was present in regular Bender

T - First there is a hint of cream, then you get roasted, smooth and slightly bitter coffee. The coffee's bitterness remains in check throughout with a slight milky, creamy sweetness. That light hoppy taste is a reminder that this is still Bender at heart. The finish is roasted coffee with a hint of orange peel and hops. For a coffee beer, it really brings a nice coffee flavor that is well balanced. You don't get as strong of a coffee aspect as you do with say a BCBCS but this is still a good beer.

MF - Lighter in the body. Has decent carbonation at first yet manages to have a slight creaminess and smoothness to it. The lighter body goes well with the subtle and balanced coffee flavor

O - A very delicious year round coffee beer from Surly. It is a nice balanced beer that brings a good, balanced coffee flavor. I wasn't the biggest fan of normal Bender; however, I'm a big fan of this and will try to seek anymore. I could see this as a good beer to have first thing in the morning. I don't think I'd have it as much with dessert as it might be a bit light to stand up to some of those richer flavors.

A: Dark brownish black, medium tan head, moderate lacing.

S: Rich, creamy, espresso-like coffee, like bitter, slightly nutty iced coffee.

T/M: As with the aroma, the coffee taste comes through loud and clear and up-front. The bitterness and strongness of the coffee is balanced by some chocolate, nuttiness, and a long creamy coffee finish.

O: A delicious coffee beer, like rich, strong iced coffee.

Pours a pure brown with an average size beige head. Aroma is sweet, nutty, and coffee filled. The taste is much more coffee oriented than anything else. It’s got a coffee and cream type of thing with some cocoa, and roastiness. I guess the iced coffee cited in the description is pretty accurate. I would like to try the regular Bender, so I can taste more of what the coffee aspect did to this Brew. Great for Coffee Lovers.
