clean orange-yellow our with a frothy finger of head which went away quite quick. smells of grass, celery, pepper, lemon, coriander, orange. tastes bitter up front with a spicy pepper backbone. a bit of lemon citrus flavor, black pepper, belgian yeast, grassy and soapy hop profiles. light bodied with nice fizzy carbonation, slight amount of lacing.
this is a very tasty saison with a nice pepper kick! i was told by a friend who is a lot closer to MN to not bother with this one, and almost listened. since i ended up placing an order form a company that also had it, i figured what the heck - surly hasn't let me down yet, so i picked up a 4-pack. i am not at all disappointed. i think it's a great saison, even though a bit one sided with the pepper kick, it's still very refreshing and very tasty. looking forward to the rest of the cans on hot summer days!

The Belgian yeast really comes on strong with this one and that's a good thing. Great balance between the malt and hops. This one comes on slowly and leaves you thinking, "dam, that's an awesome farmhouse style beer." If you like this style, this is one of the better examples.

Surprisingly clear golden farmhouse ale. The aroma was mildly phenolic, but also a bit sweet and earthy. The taste was wonderful and complex. There was a gentle malty flavor with earthy/green components, but a great finish that defines the beer. A sweet honey flavor, with some banana esters as well as yeasty earthiness, not as pronounced as a hefeweisen though. A zest of lemon and possibly pepper is present throughout, but a nice sweet finish really balance it out and made me want another sip. The saison has a light feel and was overall very drinkable, complex but light and sweet, worthy of a summer drink on a patio as we enjoyed it.
Surly Cynic is a light, enjoyable drink that keeps you on your toes with a complex, sweet finish.
