Burnished golden orange pour with great clarity and a creamy half inch of bubbly foam on top. Nice active carbonation. Aromas kick off with juicy, fresh, resinous hops. Lots of citrus and grapefruit all over the place. Mellow roasted malt in the background with some caramel sweetness, but hops rule the show as it was brewed with 100% Citra.

First sip is...HOPS! Bright green citrus with lots of orange, grapefruit and resinous oils. Lightly toasted malts with some caramel sweetness. Flows down with a nice kick of bitterness. Great stuff.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and creamy with great carbonation. An easy drinking brew that brings the fresh dank hops! Glad I happened to be up in MN when this was out so I could grab a 4pack, my only regret is this being my last can...yum!

Another fantastic offering from Surly.
Golden/bronze clear appearance, moderate head, floral lightly citrus aroma. Very pleasant. Floral up front, balanced taste, citrus lingers. Not at all overwhelming.
Smooth. A very easy drinker finished off quickly.
Very much worth seeking out.

I'm surprised that there is no canning date on this, as they do put dates on some other beers. Still, probably within a few weeks of canning.

A - Beautiful clear dark copper pour with almost two fingers of dense off-white head. Head has great retention and leaves some nice lacing.

S - Nice herbal hops, with some tropical fruit, a bit of citrus, and floral aromas as well. Interesting hop combination with the earthy and fruit Also a decent malt presence, though hops do take center stage. Doesn't have the "punch you in the nose" hop presence, but the aroma is very nicely balanced.

T - Nice resiny hops up front, with more citrus than I got from the aroma, some pine and an earthy herbal presence. While quite hoppy, I wouldn't characterize this as a hop bomb. There is a nice balance of caramel malt. Finish is a bit bitter and piney. Very nice.

M - Wow, this is the creamiest IPA I've ever had. Has quite a luxurious mothfeel that balances the bitter elements nicely.

O - I've used this word several times already, but balance is definitely what makes this one a great beer. It is quite hoppy, and the bitter aftertaste lingers for quite awhile, but the malt presence is just enough to balance, without detracting from the hop character. Easily one of my favorite fresh hop ales.

Big thanks to Exiled for sharing this canned goodness.

The beer pours a yellow color with a white head. The aroma is resiny hops, along with some pine and grassy notes. This is one of the more dank smelling IPAs I have tried. The aroma has a lot of pine, resin and dank qualities to it. There is a little bready malt in the backbone and the bitterness is low to medium. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

A very nice fresh-hopped IPA that definitely lived up to the hype. I only wish I could drink this beer more often.

First can review! (even if it is only #38 overall)

Serving glass: Poured from can into Nonic Imperial Pint.

Appearance: Very light gold with moderate stark white head. Surprised how light the beer is.

Smell: Strong, fresh, sweetish, pink grapefruit with some orange, mango and pine.

Taste: Somewhat tart grapefruit assault, with layers of just barely sweet orange, mango and pine. Malts - not sure there are any. Ends very bitter.

Feel: Moderate carbonation, hop oily body, very dry finish.

Drinkability: Freshness personified. Great Wet Hop IPA that is, as expected, all about hops and bitterness. Simply, a bitter, tart grapefruit onslaught.

2013 Update: My initial review was for the 2010 release, which was a mix of Citra and Simcoe hops. 2011 was all Citra and 2012 was all Simcoe, but these were relatively similar beers, just accentuated more of this than that. However, 2013, with the Cascade and Centennial hops is vastly different. It is more citrusy and simple than tart and tropical, and definitely less aromatic. It is still really fresh tasting and maybe a little more drinkable, but not quite as good. Maybe more like a 4 than the 4.2 I gave the other vintages. I hope they do something more distinct next year, such as Amarillo or Mosaic.

big huge thanks to tom (trxxpaxxs) for randomly gifting me an ultra fresh can of this! this has been one of my top wants for awhile, stand up guy.

16oz can at about fridge temp poured into a snifter. canned on 10/12/11, exactly 2 weeks old...ohhh baby.

pours out a fairly clear golden color with maybe some orange. a nice dense 2-3 fingers of slightly off white head with some very nice retention, some lace.

big dank resins, pine, some tropical fruits, a bit spicy and a bit vegetal at times, but it smells very close to what actual fresh hops smell like. a definate cereal grain is apparent and becomes more so as the beer warms.

again very dank and resiny flavors, pine and tropical fruits being at the forefront with a bit of almost spicy onion and a hint of some sweet citrus. cereal grain malt is right there and maybe a very slight hint of the yeast noticable. a nice smooth bitterness.

a very smooth medium body, also very resiny, did i mention dank. good feeling carbonation.

definatly one of the better fresh hop beers out there, goes to show what freshness really does when it comes to hops. very similar to what the sticky yellow powder (lupulin) smells like on some fresh high alpha hops. id drink this again and again, but sadly, very hard to get and a very small time slot, its already too late to trade for...damn

Can (2011)

Thanks for sharing, j47paco!

Slightly hazy auburn and orange with a very thin off-white head.

As expected, the aroma is quite hoppy and focuses on citrus: lots of grapefruit and orange. There's a hint of pale or crystal malt, but this is certainly hop-forward. There's also some grassy aromas peeking through as well. Nearly perfect for a harvest/wet IPA.

A very floral and grassy hop flavor with a mild citrus behind it. Simple, yet obviously fresh, and incredibly tasty.

Disappearing, crisp, medium mouthfeel. Incredibly drinkable.

A wonderful, refreshing, drinkable, tasty fresh hop IPA.

Poured from 16 oz. can into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass. Canned on 10/04/11.

Appearance: Bright and lively amber orange with lots of rising bubbles. Big five finger white head that holds up pretty well. Lots of sticky lacing rims the glass.

Smell: Huge aroma of hops. Lots of citrus including notes of grapefruit, pineapple, mango, and orange. Strong presence of pine resin and a hint of onion from the hops. A healthy background of malts is also noticeable with a nice bready aroma lingering behind the hops.

Taste: Like the nose, a huge assertive flavor of citrus and piney hops. Big notes of grapefruit, pineapple, mango, and orange with lots of pine resin. Also a hint of spicy onion and grass. A nice presence of bready caramel malts brings some balance. Very bold and tasty.

Mouthfeel: Medium to heavy body with a moderate level of carbonation. Chewy, somewhat dry and very smooth for such a boldly hopped ale.

Overall: Another great ale from Surly. Very boldly hopped but still very smooth and balanced. Very tasty.
