"Quickly, bring me a beaker of wine, so that I may wet my mind and say something clever."
Sunny tangerine orange with polished 24-karat gold accents. The upper third of the pint glass is filled with three fingers of alabaster colored mousse that has lots of interesting surface topography, especially as it loses altitude. Abundant lace means abundant hop resins... just guessing.
The nose didn't assault my nose on the pour, but is all kinds of wonderful once the two are in close proximity. Citra hops contribute a lemony herbal quality and Simcoe adds grapefruit and pineapple. Pure pleasure to sniff.
This can is roughly 3 months old... which is far from advanced... but we're talkin' about a wet hop ale here... so keep that in mind. Wet is still tremendously hoppy beer, but it isn't an enamel stripper. Most breweries would kill for an American IPA that tasted anywhere near this good right out of the kettles.
The malt tastes mostly pale with a hint of caramel for additional flavor interest. The stars of the show, obviously, are the little green cones noted above... plus Columbus. Each mouthful is a controlled explosion of citrus zest, pineapple, peppery herbs and Mary Jane. Citra gives this brew a 'not your typical AIPA' quality.
The mouthfeel does everything that it needs to do... and then some. It's medium-full for the style and the carbonation is right on the money. The ideal amount of energy transfer occurs to challenge, yet still coddle, the mouth and tongue.
It's mighty tempting to give canned Surly Wet the ultimate taste score, which is what on-tap Surly Wet received at my hand. However, wet hop IPAs are meant to be consumed immediately after their creation, so some decline is only natural. I'm still enjoying the hell out of a brew whose original 20 ounces are almost gone already. A big Thank You to the consumate BA, feloniousmonk, for an incredibly generous package that brightened my holiday season.
