16oz can (canned on 9/12/13) poured into a Dogfish Head signature glass.
A - This pours a beautiful and absolutely crystal clear pale golden color with a thick two fingers of fluffy cream colored head. Several minutes pass before the head dissipates leaving behind lots of sticky and webby lacing on the glass. This is a great looking beer!
S - Quite hoppy up front as expected. Interesting mix of aromas - citrusy and juicy with grapefruits, quite peachy also. Spicy too with some cinnamon and cloves - maybe a bit phenolic as well. Tropical fruity mango can be found in here as well. Some resiny, piney hops round things out. Really not getting any malt to come thru this wall of hops. Seems like the gamut of hop aromas can be found here.
T - Interesting...first real impression I get is of the malt base...lightly honey sweet, crackery and toasted malt. Hmm, hops are surprisingly subtle especially considering this can is only 2 weeks old. Bitterness is fairly low and mild, lacking the bitter bite I expected to find here. Hop flavors are rather subtle too but consist of a mix of grassy, citrusy and piney flavors. Everything here is nice, but surprisingly muted overall. I'm actually a bit in shock...after having other Surly IPA's I expected this to have a bit more kick...a little disappointed.
M - Lightish medium body with a similar intensity carbonation that is soft and smooth. Hint of alcohol presence is noticeable. Balanced...too well balanced - hops and malt are on an almost equal level here...really wanted more hops.
O - I really don't know what to make of this one. I expected a super fresh and hoppy IPA out of Surly. Fresh, yes - but super hoppy...not so much. Intensity is lacking here...I would almost call this delicately flavored.
