Beer added by: feloniousmonk on 10-10-2009

We took a break from brewing our Wet Hopped West Coast Style IPA in 2014 while we moved into our new brewery so for 2015 we came back with a bang. Our 2015 edition features 6,000 lbs of Simcoe hops harvested from the Yakima region of Washington. We went all out in 2015 and brewed 600 barrels, TEN TIMES as much WET as we first brewed when we started wet hopping back in 2009. And, for the first time ever, WET distribution will reach our neighbors in Wisconsin, Iowa and Chicago in both draft and 16oz cans.

2013 was a mix of Cascade and Centennial hops
2012 was Simcoe hops only
2011 was Citra hops only

2,400 lbs of hops picked freshly in oregon and shipped to Minnesota immediately. We brewed this beer three days later. This is a hop forward beer, dry with subdued malt flavors.

This is a fantastic tasting, very unique IPA. The overall hoppiness is a little more subdued, maybe because the hops are never given a chance to dry out as the description on the can states. Either way, flavors of citus, tropical fruit and sweet malt come through. Just flat out delicious.

Green, definitely very green.
Vegetal, hints of mango, and maybe peppermint (almost peppercorn) ever so faint.
Taste is more along the line of grass, some citrus zest, and malt.
Pretty good.

Type: 16-oz. can
Glass: Hardwood Artisans pint glass
From: My cousin Sam
Price: N/A
Purchased: N/A; Received Nov. 6, 2015
Consumed: Nov. 6, 2015
Misc.: Canned on Sept. 29, 2015

Thanks Sam!

Poured a honey, hazy color with two fingers of off-white, frothy head. Some bubble streams coming up from the bottom of the glass. Below average spotty foamy spots of lacing on the sides of the glass. Good retention. (Sight - 3.75)

Smelled underwhelming hints of lime, pine, Citrus zest, soap, caramel, spicy Simcoe late and some tropical notes. Really not as potent as I would have thought. Reminded me of Surge soda and maybe even some Mountain Dew. (Smell - 3.25)

Tasted better than the nose and different than maybe anything I’ve had before. Got those citrus notes - lime, pine, lemon zest, soap and Surge soda - up front. Also tropical, pineapple, herbal, grass, some tartness, floral and light tangerine rind. Clean and crisp, with the alcohol well hidden (Taste - 4.00)

Medium body. Oily, sticky texture. Average carbonation. Long, citrusy finish. (Feel - 4.25)

This beer really grew on me as it went down. Thankful for Sam hooking me up as always. (Taste - 4.00)

Light copper pour, moderate clarity, and sticky white head that clings down the glass. Pine and resin on the nose, along with some grassiness, lemon, and bready malt. Slightly more subdued than expected, but some hop aroma has likely already faded. The flavor follows exactly, plenty of piney, resinous goodness with hints of grass, lemon. A very balanced beer. Mouthfeel is medium with moderate high carbonation. A nice dry finish. A very nice wet hopped beer!

The beer has a light orange color. The aroma is malty. The taste is piney bitterness, grassy, tropical fruits, and some malt. One of the better wet hop beers

Poured from the tallboy can into a becker. Pours golden clear with a one finger head. Has a sweet spicy scent. Feels foamy in the mouth almost like the beer is not there. Sort of a sour, bitter, chunky hops taste. Bit of a can smell after a while, but overall tasty and a little different.

L (4.5) - Very nice dark amber color and big pile of off white foam on top.
S (4.25) - Pretty good floral hop aroma. Maybe not as strong as I'd expect, but quite noticeable.
T (4.25) - Good tasting beer. I'd maybe expect the hops to pack a little more punch. I've wet-hopped homebrew before, but not real experienced with wet-hopped commercial beers.
F (4.25) - Nice drinkable beer. Good carb, but still smooth.
O (4.25) - Overall, this is a very good beer. I may have been expecting a little more due to everybody talking about it. And at the price point! I liked it, and would buy again, but I'd buy Abrasive or Todd or a few others first.

Pours a bright translucent gold. Few finger head that quickly dissipated but a layer of foam film remains. Smell of wet hops is unmistakable. Nice tropical dank with a hint of malt. Taste is similar. Dank upfront with some fruit rind and then a nice mellow bitter. Great feel. Super smooth with the added wet feel reminiscent of drinking a red wine. Great beer.

Can. Pours a slightly hazy orange color with a very nice, thick, consistent head. Aroma out of the can is actually much better than from a glass. The nose doesn't blow doors off but you get some inviting citrus, dry malt and mango hops with some light grass. Flavor is clearly better. It possesses a really tangy, citrusy, grapefruity, orangey hoppiness. Almost tart. Then you get some more of the nuances from the hops. The malt is drier than many but still offers a bit of sweetness for balance. I enjoy the flavors from the hops in this beer. Hops almost taste a bit peachy, too. Medium body with some potent bitterness. Been a long wait for this one and I know the recipe or at least the hop varietals change year-to-year but this year was quite tasty.

Received this as an extra in a trade. Canned on 9/29/15.

A - Poured into my Kate the Great tulip a golden hue with a one finger white head that faded rather quickly to leave light lacing and a thin halo.

S - Aromas of lots of grassy notes, super super faint mango, decent amount of caramel malts, flash of pineapple.

T - Taste is similar to the nose. Light grassy notes, little bit of sweet candied pineapple. The finish is lightly bitter, almost herbal. Malt sweetness isn't quite as 'up front' as the nose was, which, is always a plus.

M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, comes across as a bit thin/watery.

O - Overall this beer certainly shows flashes of some good IPA notes, but, doesn't really deliver. A month in the can shouldn't change a Surly beer THIS much but, who knows.

16 oz can dated 09/29/2015

Hops: 100% Simcoe

This is my first time trying Surly Wet, been wanting to get it for a few years now. All Simcoe was an interesting pick. I'm getting tons of white grape notes from the hop, which I wasn't expecting at all. Gets much better as it warms up in the glass. I'm a little disappointed after having Abrasive and Todd earlier this year, but that's setting the bar pretty high. Still a good beer.

16oz tall can "CANNED ON 09/29/15 F3079"

A — Poured into a 13oz tulip for tasting. Pours with a nice vivid orange hue to it. There is a coconut colored head on-top of the beer that leaves behind a thin layer of lace with each sip.

S — Smell is sweet and brings notes of lemon, pineapple, peach, bit of mango, guava, little bit of earthiness, some fresh cut grass, and fresh picked hops.

T — Taste is light initially, but as it warms it build to a real melody of juicy and sweet flavors. There are notes of mango, melon, pineapple, citrus, passionfruit, guava, lemon, and orange. There is a bit of a bitter pine here but overall it is quite sweet and lingers.

M — Medium bodied, perhaps a bit heavy, there is a lingering sweet finish. This is also just a touch overcarbed for my tastes.

O — Very nice overall, and a good representation of sweet Simcoe. Overall this is sweet, and delicious. Would seek out again.

TONS of white grape must in the nose, smells like I'm walking in a vineyard there's so much grape. Flavor is actually pretty well balanced, maybe could use more malt to back up how fruit forward the hops are. The most white grape I've ever gotten in a Simcoe hopped beer. Could've sworn it was Nelson Sauvin. (2015 vintage)

Excellent beer. Received as part of a BIF.

Poured from a can. Nice golden color with small white head, that dissipated quickly, a little murky. Smell is awesome, pine and citrus from the Simcoe. Taste follows, with a nice wallop of hops at the end. Smooth and refreshing.

16oz can, canned 9/26/15, poured into a snifter

A- pours a deep golden color with a one-finger creamy white head that retains nicely after throat, leaving some lace behind

S- very resinous and leafy hop aroma up front with notes of wet grass, citrus peel & some Danny notes. Underlying toasted and caramel malt, but clean overall

T- fresh, resinous and dank up front, with flavors of orange marmalade, fresh cut grass, leafy, guava & mango, lingers of fresh citrus and grass

M- medium body with low carbonation leads to a creamy mouthfeel that continues into the finish, super drinkability

O- a wonderful showcase of wet hops that goes down way too easy

Thanks to Jeff for this one. 16oz. can into a Grrrz teku. Shared with schen9303.

Pours a foamy, 1.5 finger white head with great retention. Beer is a clear copper. Lacing is patchy and thick with excellent cling. A fantastic looking beer!

Nose is citrus, pine, tree sap and dank hop bitterness. Deep and subdued.

Opens tree sap, pine, papaya and mango. Some citrus in the middle with a big, bold hop bitterness balanced by a nice malt backbone. Sappy end with a sweet, tropical fruit finish. Dry, lightly bitter aftertaste. Really nice.

Light bodied with moderate to ample carbonation. Smooth and lightly prickly in the mouth and goes down wet and quenching. Sticky finish with a lingering aftertaste. Very nice.

I thought I wouldn't like this seeing as it starts of resiny and sappy. However, a nice tropical and citrus fruit malt presence balanced things out nicely and turns this into a very enjoyable and intriguing beer. Definitely worth trying!

Look: Nice looking beer. Yellow-orange with a thick white head.

Smell: Dank grass (simcoe hops), pine, and citrus fruit. West coast IPA pillars.

Taste: Better than the smell for me. Dankiness and pine are the most noticeable. The bitterness of the hops comes out on the back-end.

Feel: Pretty thin-bodied. Goes down really easy. No alcohol taste present.

Overall: Really good fresh hop IPA. Surly is so good at IPAs. It was as good as expected.

Canned on 09/29/15. Only a month old. Poured into a pint glass. Almost clear gold with a one inch head. Flakes of sediment float throughout. Decent lacing. Not much in the smell. Grass, lemon, and citrus. Taste follows. Not very bitter and has a sweet malty taste with slight grapefruit in the finish. Creamy and smooth feel. Good beer but a little disappointed. The rating was a 95? Definitely think that is too high.

16oz can, dated 9.30.15, poured into a Surly Darkness tulip glass.

The beer pours a hazy copper color, orange hues with a foamy white head, about a finger high that has decent retention and leaves little lace. The aroma is pleasant, super piney and resinous, grapefruit peel, earthy hop spice, a bit of onion-y vegetal notes, very green, definitely reads "wet" or fresh hops, light pale grain sneaks in. The flavors are in line, earthy hops, very green, plenty of resin, pine, sticky and oily hops, grassy and herbaceous with some prominent vegetal flavors and just a kiss of malt sweetness, very much in the West Coast vein. The mouthfeel is good, coating, super smooth, lower carbonation but a nice full body that finishes with a bitter and dry kick, lingers nicely.

Verdict: A solid fresh hop or "wet" hop IPA from Surly, a bit dominant on the pine, earthy and vegetal flavors, which isn't exactly what my palate prefers, leaves little room for any fruit, floral or bright flavors. That being said, this definitely quenched my thirst and should suit any hop head well.

Poured from a 16 oz tallboy into a clear glass tulip. Canned on 09/24/15 on bottom of can. Lugged by my parents from IA -- thanks M&D, that's love.

A: Hazy orange-amber with 1-finger oatmeal colored head with good retention and irregular sheets of lacing down the glass -- need to get more measured with my consumption.

S: Big waves of grapefruit and orange citrus with a substantial spicy and pine bite, and nice herbal grassy wet hop character, maltiness is not idle but provides a light caramel counterpoint. Very clean aroma.

T: Huge hop flavor, delicious in every way, but I wish it was a bit drier. THe spiciness really battles the citrus and pine character to be top dog and the grassy wet hop bit is very well integrated. The malt component is not ignored at all and comes through with a bit more sticky caramel but damn it's good. Medium to high bitterness.

M: A little sticky and I wish it was lighter and smaller with medium body and carbonation.

O: Wow am I glad I got a chance to try this one. Substantial IPA, bordering on DIPA feel and flavor, really excellent but I wish it was a tad lighter and less caramelly but it is a Surly signature.

Excited to try this one. 16 oz. can into a tulip. Dated 9/25/15 so about 5 weeks old.

A - Lighter than I expected. It's a beautiful, transparent hello/orange with a fluffy white head. IPAs don't get much nicer.

N - A pleasant hop aroma with very little bitterness. Not as intense as I might have hoped.

T - I'll admit that I'm not the biggest fan of simcoe hops, but is is pretty good. It's almost an ode to the simcoe. Tons of piny hop bitterness. Dry on the finish, but not as clean as I would like.

M - Yeah, nailed it. Immediate froth on the tongue and palate. Love that.

O - Nice, but not my favorite from them. Glad I got to try it though.

A: light golden honey color with no haze. It has moderate carbonation and a very thin white head.

S: Aroma is not as extreme as Furious, citrus, lemon but also a bit of spice. It's a somewhat subtle hop aroma.

T: You get such a wide range of hop flavor that includes a spectrum citrus, such as grapefruit, orange, lemon, but a touch of spice. The fresh hop flavor is certainly different than other Surly offerings, such as Furious and Overrated. The malt quality balanced with the hop flavor combines for a great beer. The malt delivers a bready and biscuit flavor that provides a backbone to this beer. Smooth taste experience for an IPA and only a touch of backside bitterness.

M: Medium body of malt and moderate carbonation. Malt provides bready character for a pleasant mouth feel.

O: Todd Haug and company have come up with another impressive beer that's a stand out in the category. It's always enjoyable to have a hop forward beer that's not an assault on your taste buds and provides a smooth that flavorful taste experience.

Canned on 29 Sept and enjoyed on 16 Oct. Medium dark with heavy head which stays around with good lacing. Nice, fresh hops aroma drifts up. Taste is clean and clear, piney and resinous. Long, lingering aftertaste. A wonderful fall alternative to the pumpkins and Marzens.

Update 23 Oct. Side by side with Founders Harvest, bottled on 30 Sept. It was a very tough call, but Surly came through on the taste with greater complexity. Both are fine, fine works.

Thanks to jason83 for this one!

So, standard, slightly cloudy appearance and pretty aroma.
Taste is where this thing delivers. So balanced! Some fruit, some pine, some bitterness, some sweet malt. Everything in its right place. I swear I'm tasting some mosaic hops, though the desc. says ctz, simcoe, and citra only.
Carb is spot on. Somewhat fluffy.

Had head to head with founders harvest tonight, and while I love the clarity and unique fresh dank bitter of the founders, I think wet is a more nuanced effort.

Poured from a 16oz. can into s Surlyfest stein.

A: Pours a hazy deep golden honey color with a finger of creamy slightly off-white head. Head lingers around for quite and leaves some nice thick bubbly lacing.

S: Aromas of lemon peel and citrus greet you immediately then aromas of pine, fresh cut grass, honey, cracker and biscuit like malts, and some nice floral notes from the hops. The aromas are phenomenal yet surprisingly subtle.

T: You get some nice flavors of lemon, orange, grapefruit, peach and other citrus notes from the hops right up front. In the middle you find flavors of sugar cane, biscuit malts, and honey. Finishes with some more citrus, and some great earthy floral hops providing a nice subtle lingering bitterness.

M: Light to medium in bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. Very crisp with a slick oily finish that leaves a perfect amount of bitterness.

O: A very delicious and impressive fresh hop IPA. From the second it is poured you can't help but be impressed. I just wish I could have gotten my hands on more then two four packs. This is an incredibly easy drinking brew that seems to get better each time you have one. If you get a chance to try this brew don't hesitate for a second because you will be missing out on a great beer.
