On tap at the Happy Gnome in St. Paul, MN. Served in a standard shaker pint glass.

Appearance: Color is a very dark brown with some hints of amber and ruby red. Moderate amount of bubbles. About two fingers of off white head which slowly fade to a thin patchy layer. Leaves a good amount of lacing.

Smell: A very malt forward and roasty aroma. Sweet dark roasted malts with good hints of caramel, toffee, chocolate, and nuts. Good amount of brown sugar. Also some hints of oak chips and a touch of vanilla. Light hint of earthy hops.

Taste: Like the aroma, just a little stronger. Roasty dark malts with notes of caramel, toffee, chocolate, nuts, and some brown sugar. Fairly yeasty with a light hint of banana. Also some hints of oak. Some earthy hops show up towards the finish. A pretty good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Very creamy, slick, and smooth. Sweet but not really syrupy.

Overall: A very good take on a Dunkel lager. Nice dark roasted flavors that blend well together.

Had this a few weeks ago at Durty Nellies, review is from tasting notes.

A: appears a dark translucent brown, very little head and no retention or lacing

S: nice roasty profile up front with toasted grains and lots of bready notes

T: Awesome balance between nutty and roasty flavors wit some hints of coffee and chocolate in there

MF: light body, medium carbonation, crisp

D: the drinkability couldn't be much better. Lots of flavor with a nice light body and a nearly sessionable ABV. Surly seems to do the high flavor low alcohol thing very well.

Reviewed cold from the tap at the brewery

A – Poured a finger of foam, dark bodied brew with a tan head. Good amount of carbonation present

S - Dark roasted malts with hints of caramel and chocolate and coffee little hop aroma present

T /M – Medium bodied and smooth with no hop bitterness. Sweetness lasted throughout the brew. Caramel and chocolate blended well with some coffee and malt

D - Very drinkable brew. Medium bodied, easy going down. A for sure brew to session but too bad that it is only found on tap! Another great brew from Surly and I recommend having it when you can

Pours a dark barely tranparesnt cocoa brown color.

Aromas is of huge roasted malts with some coffee/cocoa aromas as well.

Tastes very roasty, lots of roasted malt flavors going on here. The bar was about 85 degrees where I was and this beer still tasted great. A little lighter in flavor this could be a great session beer.

Mouthfeel was smooth and somewhat velvety, medium to low carbonation, great beer.

Very drinkable, would love to try this again.

Review from notes taken while I enjoyed this beer on tap at The Bavarian Lodge in Lisle, IL with (among others) my two brothers-in-law Steven and Mat August 21st, 2010. Mat lives within minutes of this place and we enjoy visiting there when I am in town. Poured into standard pint glass.

A Light brown head over a dark, mahogany body that lets light through but it certainly a "dark" beer. A good, classic look for the style. 4.0

S Woody notes, nutty, medium roast malt. Really good and inspiring in terms of the style, an underappreciated one by most people. 4.0

T Nutty, malt goodness, oak wood taste. Really satisfyingly good. 4.5

M Moderate feel with some smoothness. 4.0

D It is very easy to drink this beer and I would certainly have had more than one if I was not in to sampling whatever I could get my hands on that night at the Bavarian Lodge. 4.5

Notes: My first Surly looks like one that is limited, on tap only. Leave it to the superb Bavarian Lodge in Lisle, IL to offer it, a great, great place to drink beer.

Murky brick colored with a frothy off white head.

Thick bready aromas, dark breads with hints of pumpernickle. Light yeasty and earthy esters, light chocolate.

Very nice, refreshing and overly drinkable. Large amounts of moderately sweet, creamy, earthy malts, chocolate and yeasty flavors. Endless drinking possibilities.

Draft at Stub & Herbs. Poured into a pint glass a dark brown color with a ever so slight head. What head there is collars around the rim of the glass a light tan color. I would have liked more head but it seems the bartender wanted to fill it to the brim! The aroma is actually quite mild with notes of light roast coffee. Medium mouthfeel. I would guess this uses maris otter barley given the appearance and aroma. Medium mouthfeel. Starts off with a very slight dark fruit flavor, a touch nuttiness, and the aforementioned light roast notes. Sweetness sticks around the whole time. Mild bitterness. Some caramel flavors as well as it warms up a touch. VERY easy drinking. Like.

On tap at Cafe 28 (tasting note from mid-May)

A: Reddish mahogany brown in color. Served with a good sized tan head. Good retention.

S: Roasted malts. Bready. Some earthy tones and a bit of smoke.

T: Again roasted malts with a certain nuttiness and a noticeable bit of char, smoke and peat. Not overdone, but with this beer being on the lighter side, even the lighter notes of smoke and peat come through clearly. Very mild bitterness on the end.

M: On the lighter side of medium with active carbonation.

D: Overall another good beer from the folks at Surly. Lighter bodied with a full flavor makes this one both sessionable and great with food. And while this is not my preferred style of beer, I enjoyed this one thoroughly. Oddly, I felt this one had more smoke character than Surly's Smoke.

On tap at the White Horse in lovely Saint Cloud.

A- Looks good and black with little to no head. It was so dark that the bartender thought he had pulled the wrong tap arm and proceeded to pour a half glass of Furious which he graciously slid my way.

S. There is a faint whiff of Smoke and maybe a lovely hint of malt. This one is not really a sniffer.

T. Very molasses, smoke and malt. It has a bit of nutty, smoke almost rye flavor. Perhaps if Surly Smoke and Surly Fest had a baby it would taste a little like this. (mmm tasty babies)

M. Very firm but not overbearing. It has the consistency of Surly Smoke. It goes down good.

O. I would try this again any chance given. It would make a great session beer if it was ever bottled. I feel as though the ABV may be a bit higher though. (shhh it's our secret)
