On tap at Brasserie V in Madison, Wisconsin.

A- Clear, darker brown-copper reddish body, half finger head, minimal retention time. No lacing. [3.5]

S- Oak, nuttiness, yeast, a bit of chocolate and roast. Mostly grainy malt sweetness and the nuttiness. Kind of like a brown ale, but with more graininess and a yeasty, mineraly scent. [3.75]

F- Chocolate, nuttiness, roasted malts, yeast, hint of oak. Just about what the nose promises. Interesting take on a dunkel, I do appreciate the complexity that the oak adds to the lager. [3.75]

M- On the lighter side of body, good carbonation, balanced finish with the malt sweetness and the slightly earthy bitterness. Smooth and crisp. [3.75]

O- Very smooth and crisp drinking lager. I enjoy the roasted malt character in this mixed in with the mineral and mild earthy flavours from the yeast. [3.75]

Final score: 3.74

Rich caramel & toffee, a little nutty. Well balanced and sweet.

Serving: On tap, 4oz sampler
Served: 6 August 2014

Appearance: Pours a standard brown color, clear, with a bit of an off-white head. The head doesn't stick around much, but this could be due to the sampler size. Looks excellent for the style.

Smell: Not really much in the nose- some caramel/toffee notes, a bit of nuttiness, but overall nothing that really pops (even a generic 'beer' smell isn't all that evident here).

Taste: No real assertive flavors here- a slight overall nuttiness, like one would get from dark whole-wheat bread along with a touch of caramel sweetness.

Mouthfeel: Excellent carbonation and body for the style.

Overall: This beer just feels a bit lacking to me. Definitely not the best example of a Munich Dunkel that I've had, and one that could benefit from slightly more assertive flavors. Still, not a bad beer, but one that drinks more like an American Amber Lager than a Munich Dunkel.

Served at the tap room.
This is probably the boldest dunkel I've had. Rich, with a crunchy crackling malt bill. Nicely balanced malt flavors and no particular hop presence.
Attractive with brown with amber highlights and clear. Nice off-white head.
Full body for style and a nice lager smoothness.
