Reviewed from notes. Darkness Day 2012.

Hazy orange with a foamy white head, with very good retention and lacing. Smells like grapefruit, orange, pineapple, pine, and Brett.

Tastes is much like the aroma with grapefruit, orange, pineapple, pine, and Brett. I love the combination of bitterness, with some funk from the Brett.

Medium bodied with average carbonation and a somewhat dry finish. I just loved this beer. It was a true highlight of Darkness Day for me.

On tap at Surly's Darkness Day at the brewery. First time this is available. Served in a 8 oz. clear plastic cup.

Appearance: Color is a somewhat hazy copper amber orange with a moderate amount of carbonation. A solid three fingers of white creamy head with good retention. Leaves a decent amount of lacing around the glass.

Smell: A pretty hop forward aroma with subtle Belgian elements. Big smell of citrus hops upfront with hints of grapefruit, orange peel, pineapple, lemon, and tangerine. Some Belgian yeast with a bit of funk, Brett, and hints of cherry wine. A little bit of earthy pine. Some bready malts in the background with hints of caramel, toffee, and biscuit.

Taste: A good sharply bitter taste with a little Belgian kick. Upfront is a strong taste of citrus hops with some grapefruit, orange, lemon, tangerine, and pineapple along with some earthy hops and pine resin. Subtle Belgian yeast along with some Brett. Some sweet cherry wine like flavor underneath the hops. Also some bready malts with notes of caramel, biscuit, and toffee. A pretty solid hop forward taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Has a fairly juicy bitter feel that has a drying finish.

Overall: Another very good IPA from Surly. The Brett and Belgian elements add some interesting undertones.

Served on tap at Darkness Day. Appearance is a light yellowish orange with a slight haze. Pillowy head with heavy lacing. Aroma features delicate brett up front which provides a complex spice profile with fruity hops coming next. Notes of tangerine and pineapple weave with a restrained bit of funk. Taste starts with piney hops. The bitterness is offset by spice and citrus. Finish is complex as the Belgian components are nicely balance with the assertive hop profile. Mouthfeel is lighter than expected with moderate to high carbonation. I never thought brett could work in an IPA, but unsurprisingly, Surly made it happen.
