It's been said; "Its easier to brew an extremely hoppy beer than an extremely balanced beer." And you know us, we are always looking for the easy way out, so we jumped on the West Coast IPA Bandwagon and brewed this dry and hoppy ale. "Surly's a little bit of a one-trick pony, they just brew gimmick beers," and maybe we are OVERRATED, but at the end of the day it's just a beer. If yo like it, great, so do we. If you only liked us when we were small, then leave this one on the shelf. Let one of the fanyboys grab it.

Poured cold into a tulip glass; bottled within 2 weeks of consumption.
Look = 4.25 Pours a cloudy golden orange with 3 fingers of off white, thick, frothy head. Great retention and lace.
Aroma = 4.0 Citrus and piney hop goodness but also a thick sweet toffee malt backbone. Fairly strong aroma overall.
Taste = 4.0 Pine hoppy notes lead the way with light citrus or fruity notes and a sweet finish that leads into a moderate bitter finish.
Feel = 4.25 Medium bodied with medium carbonation; a little syrupy, a little resiny, good for style.
Drinkability = 4.0 West coast IPA with a decent bitter bite.
Overall = 4.075 A pretty solid west coast IPA more piney than citrusy. (672 characters)

Can was about 1 month old.

Pours an amber orange color. Nice citrus hops, grapefruit, bready malts, and fruity malts. Medium body, no bitterness, low carbonation.

Overall a decent beer. Not a hop bomb but good....would like to try it again fresher. (250 characters)

Served at the brewery tap room in Minneapolis in their chalice.

A= Medium amber with medium haze. White head with lacing that rings the glass as I sip.

S= Sweet malt, toasty malt, citrus and some grassy or pine hints.

T= Lots of bitterness with citrus and a bit of tropical hop flavor, toasty malts and some malt sweetness in the background of the bitterness.

M=Moderate level of carbonation and medium body.

O= Good IPA, lots of bitterness but enough malt to give it some sense of balance, would drink it again, but would choose Axe Man first if offered. (563 characters)

16 oz can. Bright clear light amber color, thin white head. Nose is faint tangerine. Citrusy hops are the flavor throughout, orange and grapefruit peel. Crisp and clean with just enough malt sweetness to balance. Finish is not very dry. Mouthfeel is medium. Overall this is a very solid, hop forward, good tasting IPA. (319 characters)

L: Hazy gold under a 1.5” foam cap with persistent multi-sized bubbles. S: Fresh meadow. T: Starts creamy malty with light fruit and then the hops come on board and it finishes with a lingering grapefruit rind bitterness. F: Creamy medium body and carbonation O: has that West Coast hop character. (299 characters)

Tasty. Definitely the piney west coast kind of hoppy, dry finish. Solid bitterness, minimal sweetness.Well carbed, but a bit thin feeling. Love the 16 oz can. (161 characters)

great amber color, not too dark, can whiff it as you are pouring, citrus bite evident. small tan head. I like it, i'll put it with shlayfly apa as well as smuttynose finestkind, tho I give the edge to finestkind. (211 characters)

Poured into a Duvel tulip. Bottom of can says Canned On: 06/03/15.

A- Pours a hazy medium amber color with a 1/2 inch off-white head that retains well before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a mostly full sheet of surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves a broken ring behind.

S- Super fruity hop nose with a sweetness from the malt that amplifies the aroma.

T- The taste varies a bit from the smell. Hits of pineapple, tangerine and grapefruit here and there but it's the big bitterness that reigns over the the profile. The malt provides a bit of balance but the hops end up dominating.

M- Sharp from the hops with medium carbonation and a body leaning toward the lighter side.

O- Ironically enough, I'd say this is about on-par with the current score of 92 it has. (804 characters)

Aroma's really good with fruit, malt, caramel, hops, herbs, grass. Appearance is good too with a nice head that settles after a bit, good lacing, and a clear gold amber color. Flavor to me is a slightly modified West Coast Style or, West Coast interpreted. Loads of hops and their bitterness, good strength, and in this case, a little more balancing malt ( which I like ). Slightly medicinal finish. Gimme another. (414 characters)

from a 4 week old tallboy into an imperial pint

a: hazy pale pineapple gold with a tinge of orange and a 2 finger puffy white head that leaves great lacing...looks good.
s: grapefruit rind, lemon peel, pineapple, very faint herbal notes, caramel and bready malts...a little too sweet to be ideal for me, but...
t: what one expects from the nose...nice layered approach with good things at each step. sweetness, some light peppery spiciness and citric hoppy bitterness linger
f: medium to maybe a little low on the carbonation. plenty of hop oils coating my mouth. a little more oily and sticky than is ideal for a west coast style ipa imho, but still plenty enjoyable. (672 characters)

Pours an orange infused hazed lighter golden with a great looking almost creamy-like sticky white head atop.Whoa man the tangerine and ruby red grapefruit are just jumping out at me in the nose,a bit of caramel thrown in makes it more than inviting to say the least. On the sweeter side on the palate, almost candied flavored hoppy goodness with a hefty caramel base, like sweet hop juice. Not for the non hophead, but it is on the sweeter side but damn I love it. (460 characters)

16oz can dated "05/04/15 F2901" poured into 16oz tulip

A — Pours a light hazy orange hue, there is a light caramel colored head that forms and leaves behind minimalist lacing.

S — Smells mostly malty, little bit of juicy fruit tones, mango and light pineapple.

T — Taste is quite bitter and piney, there is a little bit of a pineapple sweetness to balance it out, lots of sweet light malts as well.

M — Light-Medium bodied, there is an adequate amount of carbonation as well.

O — Nice overall, expected a little more, it's certainly hoppy but not what I would really expect from a "West Coast" IPA, too malty. (625 characters)

Pours hazed golden with a foamy head that lasts. Lacing sticks.

The smell is of robust citrus - grapefruit/orange with some pine.

The taste is of strong citrus - orange, grapefruit - with some pine. A firm, chewy malt backbone ties hops together and adds smoothness.

A "classic" "West Coast" IPA brewed in the Midwest! Very nice! A "hop-head's" delight! (358 characters)

Pours a nice, slightly Hazy golden orange. The smell is phenomenal! I set it a cross the room and could smell the perfect combination of piney citrus. Extremely balanced APA. Not overbearing piney resin, with slight citrus and malt for balance. Still provides dank. A slight onion/garlic in the end to heighten the feel. Not a lot of carbonation, and is crisp and refreshing. I could drink a lot of these, the 7.3% could sneak up on me however. Another good beer from Surly. (483 characters)

Appearance is a very slightly hazy amber color. Head is milky white with good retention. Very similar to the Pliny I'm tasting it with. Pliny being a little cleaner.

Smells like grapefruit with a little lemon/lime zest. Some pine background. Similar to Pliny but less piney and absolutely no danky pine aroma.

Tastes very citrusy, a little sweet, but not overly sweet, with a little lingering pine finish. Not a lot of depth with the hop flavors but refreshing with a bit of bitterness.

Medium carbonation. Not much to say here. Clean, crisp, like this style should be.

Overall I think this is a good beer for the style that it set out to be. I wish I still had a Blind Pig from Russian River to compare this to but if memory serves me I'd say that the Blind Pig has a little more depth for a single IPA but this is still a beer I'd start with and it is available in the area. (882 characters)

This should be called UNDER RATED! Even at its current BA rating at 4.09.... I don't know why I waited this long to try this but I'm glad I didn't wait another day. Will be a main stay in the rotation. (204 characters)

Picked this up as a part of a build-you-own-sixer at Four Firkins in Minneapolis. The canned on dated states this was canned a month ago. Poured right from the fridge into a pint glass.

L: Pours a deep straw/honey amber color with about a half-inch of off-white head the falls fairly quickly to a film but leaves decent lacing on the glass. Quite clear, with moderate visible carbonation.

S: Not an exceptionally big bouquet, but what's there is very nice: citrus hops, with notes of apricot and freshly cut grass. There's some bready malt notes present, along with a bit of pine hop notes, as well.

T: Some nice citrus and earthy/funk hop flavors right out of the gate, with good bready malts to balance things out a bit. A bit of grassiness and bumble gum in the mix, as well. The middle moves a bit toward the more piney hop flavors, with a bit of clear alcohol coming through. A touch of apricot/stone fruit. The close is definitely dominated by the hops, with a real resinous quality that leaves some nice bitter on the palate.

F: This one is a bit creamy at the start, but it quickly turns quite bright/bitter. It's got a medium body, very nice carbonation, and close that brings all the bitter but doesn't quite completely coat the tongue. Quite drinkable for this ABV.

O: I had the chance to try Furious and Todd the Ax Man at the Surly Tap House, and this was doesn't disappoint, either. It's got nice balance despite bringing very big hop flavors. I like that it lets me know I'm drinking an IPA without prohibiting me from drinking another. I would definitely return to this one again. (1,601 characters)

Only issue is after a few sips you will get a slight bitter aftertaste. (161 characters)

Thanks to snaotheus for providing me this beer. Dated 2/23/15.

Poured into an IPA glass, it has a clear gold color with a two finger white head. Good retention and lacing. Aroma is citrus and some tropical f. Taste is dominated by the hops - bitter citrus on the palate with a lingering bitter finish. It's pure hops, and I like it. Body is medium with a decent amount of carbonation. Not as good as Abrasive, but it's a very solid IPA. (445 characters)

Pint can split between a pair of snifters. Canned on 2/23/15. Delivered by in-laws who brought it from Chicago.

Pours slightly very slight hazy golden with a small head and a little carbonation. Smell is powerful. Smells of citrus juice, tart. Nice.

Taste is juicy with a bitter finish.

Mouthfeel is slightly dry. Overall, good beer. (348 characters)

Can dated 3/17/15. Golden-yellowish color. Citrusy, a little floral, with a lot of that hoppy resinous smell coming through. Real bitter, hoppy taste, not a ton of malt to balance it. Fine, unremarkable mouthfeel. Overall, a pretty good IPA, but there are plenty of better ones out there. (288 characters)
