Notes/Commercial Description:
It's been said; "Its easier to brew an extremely hoppy beer than an extremely balanced beer." And you know us, we are always looking for the easy way out, so we jumped on the West Coast IPA Bandwagon and brewed this dry and hoppy ale. "Surly's a little bit of a one-trick pony, they just brew gimmick beers," and maybe we are OVERRATED, but at the end of the day it's just a beer. If yo like it, great, so do we. If you only liked us when we were small, then leave this one on the shelf. Let one of the fanyboys grab it.

Thanks to GRG1313 for sharing this one at his tasting.

Canned 5/22/13.

Pours a hazy orange with a foamy beige head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus zest flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is drinkable but tastes a bit old 4 months later.

From cooler to glass Over Rated! is apricot orange with a slight chill haze and carbonation, big and small, rushing to the surface with no rhyme or reason. Two fingers worth of dirty white head forms, becomes stiff & meringue-like, and then leaves chunky lacing down the glass. Not a bad looking IPA if I do say so myself.

Apricot seems to be a running theme as the dried variety is the first quality I get from a sniff. Tangerine, mango, and pineapple follow suit in that order of intensity while a honey drizzled biscuit maltiness sets the base. A deep whiff either brings a mild pine hop note that is reminiscent of booze or a mild boozy hit that reminds me of hop produced pine. Sounds good, right? It is.

The nose doesn't lie. The flavor profile is hop forward and based around that citric/tropical profile. Tangerines and under ripe peppery mango make up the majority of the profile but that dried apricot sneaks back in there on the finish. The malt, honeyed biscuit again, is pale but substantial enough to keep Over Rated! from being dominated by the citric hoppiness.

Sluggish carbonation and a moderate, silky body make this one a slow mover over the tongue. The dryness builds with each drink but the bitterness never steps past moderate. There's a good balance between malt sweetness, fruitiness, and bitterness.

Over Rated! is an all-around solid IPA from the guys up at Surly. I haven't had this one in a while but it's about as I remember: a clean, pale malt profile with a fruit heavy hoppiness. "West Coast Style IPA" is right. An IPA worth picking up on occasion.

Got this as an extra, already 3 1/2 months olds so not quite at it's peak. Only writing this review so that the score accurately reflects the age.

Overall, a great IPA. As good as it was with a few months on it, I can imagine how great this would be fresh.

A - pours a crystal clear deep gold color which slowly fades to a sunny yellow as it reaches the bottom of the glass. 3 fingers worth of bubbly pearly white foam. Good lacing.

S - nose is bright yet balanced. Lots of soft tropical fruitFreshly peeled oranges, mangos and pineapples. Green notes of grass and resin with a touch of pine needles.

T - Very little in the way of malt sweetness. Just enough for balance. Resiny bitterness mixed with citrus and tropical fruit flavors. Finish is long and leaves a resinous aftertaste.

M - super crisp. Lighter side of medium. High carb.

O - great ipa. Surly never fails to impress me.

Poured from a cold can into the pint glass this fine IPA shows a slightly hazy copper-amber color with a pretty husky white head and lots of chunky lacing. The aroma has a wholesome oat-cereal grain with a solid pine hop. The first swig brings home the cereal grain malt and mellow pine hops. There's a slightly grassy edge, almost an evergreen-mint idea. Delicious with woodsy-nuttiness and more oatmeal suggestion mixed into the hop dominance. The body is medium-light with moderate carbonation and the feel is somewhat frothy and smooth. Hard to beat.

poured 16oz can into Duvel tulip. Canned 6/19/13

A - Bright and hazy peach colored with a nice 2 finger foamy head. Retention is great and there is sufficient lacing.

S - Nice floral and tropical, citrus hop notes. I get unsweetened orange, tangerine, mango, and passion fruit. There is bitterness, but more of a grapefruit bitterness. Some caramel and honey sweetness round it off.

T - Big orange and tangerine, with mangos, passion fruit and other tropical flavors. Malts of caramel and honey are in the middle to balance this out. Finish is more of the citrus bitter. I think this is a delicious IPA.

M - Good carbonation, medium bodied with a slick feel.

O - I think this my favorite IPA from Surly. I really enjoy the orange, tangerine, and tropical blend. I recommend getting some!

Fantastic Brew. Was canned 6/19/13 and was quite impress how flavorful it tasted considering it was canned almost a few months ago. Poured into snifter glass. An inch or two of a foamy white head built up quickly. Beautiful golden hay-like color. The aroma was heavy on oranges and passionfruit. It's quite sweet; very inviting to take a sip.

The flavors were incredible. It starts out sweet and finishes just slightly bitter. The sweet malt cuts down the bitterness of the hops. It's pretty well balance. A lot going on in my mouth. Variety of tropical flavors present - mangos, passion fruit, and citrus. Wish the bitterness was amped up a bit more in this brew.

Carbonation seems just a tad low; without pacing myself, I will finish this IPA in no time. It's so incredibly good that after one sip it keeps me wanting more.

Overall I'm impressed. In my opinion this "Overrated" beer seems a bit underrated per BA reviews (side note: I don't quite know the difference between west-coast and east-coast IPA's, so I don't quite get how they came up with the name Overrated). Don't drink this with food, it's fantastic on its own. This beer is very mild in bitterness, should be amped up a little bit more imo. Either way, outstanding!!
