Notes/Commercial Description:
It's been said; "Its easier to brew an extremely hoppy beer than an extremely balanced beer." And you know us, we are always looking for the easy way out, so we jumped on the West Coast IPA Bandwagon and brewed this dry and hoppy ale. "Surly's a little bit of a one-trick pony, they just brew gimmick beers," and maybe we are OVERRATED, but at the end of the day it's just a beer. If yo like it, great, so do we. If you only liked us when we were small, then leave this one on the shelf. Let one of the fanyboys grab it.

16oz tallboy dated 7/11/2013, poured into an unlabeled snifter today, 8/21/2013. A bit more than a month old.

This beer pours with an uber-effervescent, 3 fingers thick white head that slowly, and I mean slowly, dissipates into thick lacing of its own from the get go. It also leaves a patchy film on the surface of the beer, which has a golden-orange body. It doesn't look thick nor thin, it looks just right. And there is a ton of lacing here as well. By far the best feature of this beer.

The smell is mostly a sharp, crisp sweetness that reminds me of light caramel and toffee. It's not a thick, molasses sweetness like some IPAs can have. There is a bit of pine and tangerine scent overhanging all of it, but it isn't overwhelming the sweet malts. I thought this was supposed to be a west coast style IPA, but I actually think I like it this way!

Tasting this beer is a very pleasant experience. There is a nice citrus, mild grapefruit-like, perhaps tangerine, sweet flavour without the acidity or sourness in the beginning which transitions into a dominance of toffee, caramel and honey sweetness briefly before it finishes off with a dry and cleansing pine bitterness. Not complex but very, very tasty with each component showing its strength.

Its got a medium body with a dry finish. Carbonation is excellent. Aftertaste is rather piney with a subtle combination of the honey sweetness and tangerine flavour. The bitterness just spreads all over as I lick the top of my palate. Not much booziness here either.

Very much a typical west-coast style IPA. Its a little over a month old, but I think it had the perfect balance of hop flavours, sweet malts and the bitterness. Easy to drink though its on the dry, resinous side. Its certainly not overrated but I wouldn't say its underrated either in terms of IPAs. I've had better but I still enjoyed this one.

Overrated pours a golden color with a small lacing head. There is a strong aroma that has floral hop notes and lots of citrus, especially grapefruit. The taste is much the same strong floral notes, with strong citrus notes. Good body and flavors, a funny fruity aftertaste however. Overall a good not great IPA, with lots of citrus flavors.

A- Cloudy orange, one finger head, leaves some lacing, nice carbonation.

S-SOme malt, then some citrus and grassy hops. Not that much. Can is only two months old though.

T-Starts with some malt then a good deal of semi-harsh citrus and grassy hops. Ends with mild bitterness.

M-Medium bodied, tad watery with some hop bite.

O-Seemed too malty to me. The can was only two months old though.

A: A slightly haze copper ale, showing evidence that it's an unfiltered, dry hopped beer with some fine hops particals.

S: A strong citrus hops aroma with medium pineapple, some pine and a citrus peel. There is a moderate malt sweetness with some caramel character. A moderate grassy dry hopped aroma.

T: An aggressive hops bitterness with a strong citrus hops flavor. The hops are lemon, citrus, some pine and a little lemongrass-like. There is a little malt sweetness, just enough to provide support for the large hops bill. The balance is very bitter but it remains smooth. The finish is pretty dry with a lingering citrusy hops aftertaste.

M: Medium bodied with a medium-strong level of carbonation and a little bit of alcohol warmth. A light bit of creaminess as well.

O: A well balanced, bitter IPA showcasing a lot of American citrus hops. This beer is smooth while having a very strong hops bitterness and flavor.

Can shared by Aniela. Thanks! Served in a pint glass.

A - White foam settles to a thin cap, thick collar, and specks of lace. Hazed orange body.

S - Big lemon, grapefruit peel, and pine. Very neutral and understated crackery malt backbone.

T - The taste is similarly heavy on lemon and grapefruit peel, pine, and grass. Very low sweetness, either from hops or malt. Well-attenuated and crackery, with a restrained malt character and moderate bitterness.

M - Dry, medium body, pleasant carbonation, and well-hidden alcohol.

D - A good beer that is definitely West Coast in execution. Easy to drink for the ABV. Could actually use a tiny bit more sweetness to offset the bitterness. I also appreciate that this is totally different from Furious.
