It's been said; "Its easier to brew an extremely hoppy beer than an extremely balanced beer." And you know us, we are always looking for the easy way out, so we jumped on the West Coast IPA Bandwagon and brewed this dry and hoppy ale. "Surly's a little bit of a one-trick pony, they just brew gimmick beers," and maybe we are OVERRATED, but at the end of the day it's just a beer. If yo like it, great, so do we. If you only liked us when we were small, then leave this one on the shelf. Let one of the fanyboys grab it.

Appearance: Bright golden color with a white head and medium beading. Great carbonation, decent head retention and nice lacing. Great clarity, but unfortunately that allowed me to see quite a lot of sediment throughout the entire beer that never settled.

Smell: Big piney, citrus aroma. Slightly sweet and fresh smell.

Taste: Identical to the aroma. A light sweetness at the start followed by tons of piney citrus. Nice bitter, crisp finish.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied, thicker, malty feel. Good carbonation, but I wouldn't mind a bit more to cut down some of the thickness.

Overall: Very glad Surly's come back to my area. They're a great brewery. They may have been taking a tongue-in-cheek jab at over hopped West coast IPAs but they managed to create a great one in the process. Definitely worth a try if you're an IPA fan.

Hazy orange with fine grains of sediment floating around. White foamy head with very spotty lacing.

Orange peel, lemon, light grassy aromas. Toasted cracker.

Tast follows suit with the citrus notes mentioned above, a little more grapefruit, and buttered crackers. It's a pretty bitter palate puncher.

Mouthfeel is dry, prickly carbonation, with a moderate-light body.

A very good ipa, but if you're going to go all tongue-in-cheek with the name I expect much more than very good.

A. Light amber to dark straw appearance with a nice white head of two fingers. Laces as you'd expect.

S. Citrus, lemon, bready cracker.

T. Very clean tasting with a nice hop cut of citrus and pine. Hops play center stage here but there is just enough malt to keep things balanced. No sign of alcohol. Well made beer.

M. Light to medium bodied with decent carbonation. This beer screams warm weather thirst quencher.

O. I am torn between Overrated and Furious as to which is better but if forced I'd say Furious's unique malt bill gives it the edge. Great new addition for Surly.

Canned on 11/29/13. Poured into pint glass.

A: Clear orange liquid. Thick white head. Head retention is very good. Lots of lacing that lastst throughout the entire glass. Lots of sediment floating about.

S: The smell is very tropical. Blasts of orange, grapefruit, and mango. There's a bit of grass and strong hop resin, but the tropical smell is pretty overpowering. Smells very nice.

T: Nice, tropical taste. Lots of mango, orange and grapefruit. A bit of pine and herbaceous hops take over at the end. Ends slightly bitter and dry.

M: Mouthfeel is perfect. Medium-bodied..moderate carbonation. Easy drinking.

O: This is a great west coast-style IPA. For being brewed in MN, this is damn good. Top tier IPA, in my opinion, down below only Sculpin and a few others.
