Notes/Commercial Description:
It's been said; "Its easier to brew an extremely hoppy beer than an extremely balanced beer." And you know us, we are always looking for the easy way out, so we jumped on the West Coast IPA Bandwagon and brewed this dry and hoppy ale. "Surly's a little bit of a one-trick pony, they just brew gimmick beers," and maybe we are OVERRATED, but at the end of the day it's just a beer. If yo like it, great, so do we. If you only liked us when we were small, then leave this one on the shelf. Let one of the fanyboys grab it.

Type: 16-oz. can
Glass: Manzanita pint glass
From: My cousin Sam
Price: N/A
Purchased: Received it on Nov. 4, 2013
Consumed: Nov. 11, 2013
Misc.: Canned on Sept. 5, 2013

Poured a honey orange hazy color with two fingers of khaki cream head. Excellent lacing along the sides of the glass. Also excellent retention on the top all the way down.

Smelled a plethora of hops right away. Got sweet floral hops, citrus hops (tangerine, orange, orange peel and some grapefruit), fruity hops, tropical hops and some caramel malts. Smells good, but not overbearing. End of it reminded me a bit of an orange creamsicle.

Tasted pretty close to the smell, not quite what I was expecting from either though. Fruity notes, floral hops and citrus hops dominate. Lots of orange peel and tangerine, and some grapefruit. Very bitter finish. ABV reads 7.30 percent and that seems about right.

Light-to-medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Long, bitter finish.

A very nice beer from one of the best in the business. A lot different than the West Coast IPA’s, but still pleasant.

Poured into a chalice from a can. I bought this beer in Minneapolis and shipped in my luggage back to Virginia. There is supposed to be a “canned on” date on the bottom, but it was not there.

A great beer and at 7.3 ABV a stealthy kick in the ass. Just a bit too bitter for me. If you like a west coast hop bomb give this beer a try. You will not be disappointed. Also, don’t be fooled, the aroma is not a good reflection of this beer’s taste. 3.75

A – Pours a cloudy honey color with a half-finger off-white rocky head that quickly dissipates to a thin layer. Wonderful Belgian lacing. 4

S – Piney, sweet, faint pineapple. 4.25

T – Herbal resinous, bitterness start to finish with some malty sweetness up front. 3.75

MF – Smooth, even a bit slick. 4.25

Poured from the can a clear gold color with two fingers of white head. Good amounts of sticky lacing left behind.

Aroma of citrus and piney hops with a whiff of pineapple and light biscuity malts.

The taste was much like the aroma. Citrusy hops, a touch of bitterness, along with honey and caramel malts. Finished clean.

Medium bodied with a moderate carbonation.

Surly never fails to satisfy. Overrated is all that and a bag of chips.
