It's been said; "Its easier to brew an extremely hoppy beer than an extremely balanced beer." And you know us, we are always looking for the easy way out, so we jumped on the West Coast IPA Bandwagon and brewed this dry and hoppy ale. "Surly's a little bit of a one-trick pony, they just brew gimmick beers," and maybe we are OVERRATED, but at the end of the day it's just a beer. If yo like it, great, so do we. If you only liked us when we were small, then leave this one on the shelf. Let one of the fanyboys grab it.

Prob a psychological effect going on here (score beer otherwise not available to me, it must be incredible) but this is good shit. Awesome hazy yellow pour, great nose, some dank as well. Loved it!

Overall very good. Pours and looks like an optimal IPA and first few sips go down easy.

Only issue is after a few sips you will get a slight bitter aftertaste.

Thanks to snaotheus for providing me this beer. Dated 2/23/15.

Poured into an IPA glass, it has a clear gold color with a two finger white head. Good retention and lacing. Aroma is citrus and some tropical f. Taste is dominated by the hops - bitter citrus on the palate with a lingering bitter finish. It's pure hops, and I like it. Body is medium with a decent amount of carbonation. Not as good as Abrasive, but it's a very solid IPA.

Pint can split between a pair of snifters. Canned on 2/23/15. Delivered by in-laws who brought it from Chicago.

Pours slightly very slight hazy golden with a small head and a little carbonation. Smell is powerful. Smells of citrus juice, tart. Nice.

Taste is juicy with a bitter finish.

Mouthfeel is slightly dry. Overall, good beer.

Can dated 3/17/15. Golden-yellowish color. Citrusy, a little floral, with a lot of that hoppy resinous smell coming through. Real bitter, hoppy taste, not a ton of malt to balance it. Fine, unremarkable mouthfeel. Overall, a pretty good IPA, but there are plenty of better ones out there.

Not cloudy but a ton of lacing.

A little citrusy, but there's some... Potpourri?

Whoa, definitely potpourri. Like drinking a diverse bouquet of flowers, in a good way. Only other comparable beer is Revo Anti-Hero, but this one's brighter in some way.

Feels fine. No real lingering stickiness either. What an IPA's supposed to feel like.

Overall, if you want a floral IPA, and don't have access to Anti-Hero (which is a bit better than this) go for it.

Aroma is mangoes/pomegranate, citrus and a hint of Belgian sugar. The flavor is citrus, mangoes/pomegranate, fruit, mild hop resin, malts and a mix of bitter and pine needles in the finish.

Poured into Spiegealau IPA glass. Look is medium gold in color and very clear. 2 finger head with staying power. Taste is somewhat sweet initially but closes with a mild bitter hoppiness. Mouth feel is smooth, not overly bubbly. Overall, a very tasty and smooth IPA from Surly that I'd buy again.

Hop profile is a little muddled. This IPA just doesn't stand out in the crowd.
Not really a West Coast IPA. Too malty for a West Coast IPA and for my tastes.

L (4.25) - It pours a nice light yellow color, with a nice white head. Fairly clear also.
S (4.5) - Really nice aromas here. Nice light floral hop. Makes me want to dive right in.
T (4.25) - Like the aroma would suggest, a nice light hoppy beer. Not mouth-puckering bitter, but fairly bitter. A wee bit of after taste, but it is pretty clean, really. No sweetness whatsoever.
F (4) - There's plenty of carbonation here, but it is fairly easy to drink. About what you'd want your IPA to be like.
O (4.25) - Overall, I liked this beer. Surly is recently being distributed in my area, and I am pumped. I had this a little warmer than it should be, and it was good. Plus, being in 16oz cans is fantastic!

A beautiful west coast-style IPA found in the Midwest. As some IPAs become less bitter, and more sugary, this holds onto a smooth, hoppy bitterness that pleases those looking to avoid sweet undertones. Very nice.

Vibrant Orange look with tons of suspended micro particles. Solid head with larger bubbles. Scent is Floral, Hoppy, a hint of lemon. Solid hop bitterness fades into slight orange zest. This is my favorite year-round offering from Surly

This one was also picked up on trade. Thanks man!

Appearance: lighter in color decent amount of head at first then settles to basically nil.

Aroma: Floral resinous hops. This does smell like something Stone would produce and does actually reminds me a lot of some Stone beers.

Taste: I reminds me a lot of Stone's DIPA's, not a bad beer in any regard but very resinous and potent. I would say Enjoy By would be a good comparison to this one, but the only difference is this one does not as as much alcohol.

Overall: Great beer, if you live in Minnesota pick this one up, otherwise its great but there are a lot of beer that have a similar taste profile. Great beer but very similar to a lot of beers out there. Its top notch but not on the caliber as the other IPA's in Surly's canon!

Look Good head. Nice looking hazy gold brew.
Smell Has a decent but very light scent
Taste The citrus comes through slightly outweighs the pine
Feel Pretty smooth for an IPA, light carbonation, and not the overwhelming bitterness I've come to expect in an IPA

Overall Solid IPA, has good balanced flavor. Nice to drink an IPA that is not trying to blow your mind by taking the profile to a decided extreme.

Big thanks to Stillyman11 for this
16 oz can, dated 11/26/14, poured into a tulip

A- A slightly hazy golden orange with a four finger white head.

S- Pine, dank, citrus, fruity.

T- Piney/dank bitter finish, bright citrus upfront, slightly fruity, caramel malts that give it a nice balance, well done.

M- Smooth, medium body.

O- An awesome IPA from Surly. Differently worth seeking out, I would not call this beer overrated.

Served from tap in a tumbler at Firkin.

We'll see about that rating... This stuff pours a clear brass topped by a finger of lightly off-white foam. The nose comprises white bread, flowers, grass, very light lemon rind, and a pinch of powdered sugar. The taste brings in more of the same, with plenty of flowery grass populating my tongue and a hint of biscuit hiding in there as well. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a drying finish. Overall, a solid IPA, one that doesn't overdo the bitterness and goes grassy instead of overly fruit-rind-y. Not bad at all.

Just picked this up at one of our local "big box" liquor stores, dated Aug. 19 on the can, so it's getting a bit old, but I'm not sure if it's pasteurized or not, I would expect not. As long as it's kept cold I'm alright with it. Poured nicedly, didn't have to be too careful, only to imply it isn't over carbonated. Liked the lighter color, although I prefer the richer amber of the more traditional IPAs. Waited until the beer settled a bit in the nonic before stealing a good quaff which I liked but didn't love. Mouth feel is a bit low. Love the aroma, as others have noted, citrusy and hop-present. Took another big ol' quaff and am watching the lacing mount up on the glass, love that, esp. from a beer in a can. I'm enjoying the finish of the beer which gives the malt a chance to come through, and I would agree with the notes below, this beer is balanced. The hops last well after the last swallow goes down. I love a dry, hoppy beer and this is one I'd buy again. I also like the ABV, good punch for the buck, but I'm breaking my own self-crafted rule here by drinking on an empty stomach, so I'm off to score a bite to eat! Prost!

Can gifted by RussianDragon. Thanks Dave.

The beer is light golden orange with a half inch of white head. Aromas of pine, melon, orange, cantaloupe, sweet citrus. Tangy and hop forward with some biscuit malt presence. Tasty.

Canned 7/22/14 and poured 9/3/14. $3.49 for a single at Four Firkins.

Appearance: Like a yellow/orange snow globe. It's fairly clear, but the floaters don't have it appearing that way. Fairly aggressive pour gave off no real head -- a few bubbles, but that's about it. Very modest lacing. Doesn't look all that great. (3.5/5)

Smell: Pine and citrus. A bit of malt in there as well. Not particularly "astringent" with a harsh hop oil sort of aroma, just surprisingly clean and great on the nose. Pretty simple, but it works. (4.25/5)

Taste/feel: Well the feel is pretty awesome on this beer. Just about full bodied with a moderately prickly carbonation -- that may be the best part about this beer. The flavor is really good too with plenty of pine and citrus in there. Not so many tropical fruits in the aroma. Not a lot of malt, but not as incredibly hopcentric as I was expecting this to be. Still, no doubt a hoppier-than-usual IPA, I'd say. Quite bitter throughout, but I've had beers that were more bitter. Aftertaste is pretty dry, and it's where the malt comes through the most. (4/5, 4.5/5)

A really good beer, but the pricing of $3.49 for a single is a little high.

Golden hued with excellent clarity. A thin layer of white head covers half of the top of the beer. Pungent grapefruit and mango hop aroma is prevalent. The hop flavor is a bit more mild than the aroma would suggest. While it is still more grapefruit hop flavor forward, it is pleasantly balanced with light malt flavor. The aftertaste is still primarily tropical flavored hops. The mouthfeel is lightly sticky, but refreshing.

I have to admit that a lot of IPAs/pale ales run together for me. There are a lot of good ones out there but only a few that I consider great. Surly IPAs are all exceptionally solid and this one fell right in line with the rest.

Poured from a 16 oz tallboy can into an oversized wine glass. Canned on 07/22/14 on bottom of can. Received through the neverending generosity of my brother Greg. Thanks bro.

A: Clear lemon gold with 2-finger, nearly white, frothy head with good retention and a nice collar of lacing.

S: Lemon, grapefruit, and lime combine with pine resin and floral hops notes. Malt component is lean and light 2-row pale malt grain with minimal to no sweetness, more crackery than anything else. I wish this nose had less lemon/grapefruit and more lime and juicy orange citrus character.

T: Solid flavor profile with big citrus assault with grapefruit rind, lemon, lime with floral, pine, and a little resiny dankness in the finish. Maltiness is crackery and could stand to be a touch sweeter. No yeast and alcohol is well-hidden. A good beer with solid WCIPA flavor but that's all the more I can say about it. It does not have the more lush juicy hops character I love in beers like Alpine Duet or Kern RIver Citra.

M: Crisp and light-bodied for the ABV with moderate carbonation and a very dry finish.

O: I liked this beer but it's not better than Stone IPA, Alesmith IPA, or a number of other WCIPAs. If I lived in MN, I would drink a fair amount of this, but it is missing the slightly oily, coating, more lush feel and more juicy citrus and floral character I enjoy more in an IPA.

Picked up a single at Four Firkins. It certainly is a West Coast style IPA, big juicy hops over a lighter body. I'm not complaining, I like the style and this is a great example. I'd liken it most to Lagunitas Sucks. The aroma holds a great mix of pine with floral spice and sweet grapefruit. The flavor follows suit with a softer bitterness of piney apricot and less floral character. The finish is slightly dry and with the lighter body, a 4-pack would be dangerously drinkable.
