On tap at the brewery. Served in a pint glass. This beer is dark golden with the slightest haze and just the faint remnants of a white filmy head. Aromas of a Belgian but subdued...estery yeast-bananaish. crisp clean malt. Taste is nice but well diminished. Weak malt backbone with that characteristic Belgian yeastiness. Very soft mouthfeel. Smooth. A bit bitter in the finish. The more I drink this the more I'm liking the overall experience.

On tap at Surly's taproom. 16 oz. serving in a shaker glass.

Appearance: Color is a deep golden amber. Moderate amount of bubbles. About one finger of off white head that fades into a thin patchy layer. Leaves a good amount of lacing around the glass.

Smell: A yeasty and spicy Belgian style aroma with a fairly strong hop presence. Belgian yeast upfront with some hints of funk, clove spice, and pepper. Esters of banana fruit and bubblegum as well as some citrus orange, pineapple, tangerine, and apricot. Bready malts with hints of grains, biscuit, oats, rye spice, and caramel. Solid hop presence with some earthy hints of grass and pine.

Taste: Like it smells, a spicy and bready yeast driven Belgian style taste. Belgian yeast with some funk, pepper, and quite a bit of clove spicing. Big taste of fruit esters with notes of banana and citrus orange, pineapple, apricot, and tangerine. Some bubblegum taste in the mix as well as some candied sugar. Bready malt presence with a taste of grains, biscuit, rye spice, oats, and caramel. Some bitter earthy hops are present with notes of grass and pine. A very good balanced taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy, spicy, and very smooth. Finishes pretty dry.

Overall: A very solid Belgian inspired pale ale. Good balance of yeast, spice, malt, and hop flavors.

A second running of Seviin, which is a Belgian ale brewed with rye, oats, and wheat. On tap at Blue Nile.

Looks like a BPA, but with a decent amount of haze. I'm getting a lot of clove on the nose, plus some tangerine, and a hint of bubblegum. There is almost no hop aroma.

Wow - this is extremely drinkable. It is much lighter than its aroma suggests, with some rye bite, and a clean finish. No discernable alcohol. I have a new session beer! Too bad it's a one-off.

I have had this twice and it tasted different the second time around. The second time around it tasted lighter and more grainy. Almost like a cereal.

Here is my review for the first time I had it when it was released early on.

Copper caramel color. Beige head.

Flavor profile reminded me a lot of cynic. Bready and biscuity. Clean. Bananas and yeast esters. Earthy with some herbal hops. Belgian yeast. Rye and spice.

Mouthfeel: Smooth and clean. Light bodied.

Overall, I was a big fan of this when I first had it, but the second time I had it, I was less impressed. However, I prefer this over 7 and could drink much more of it.

Surly Diminished Seviin. A small beer from the yet-to-be released Seviin ale 7th Anniversary brew, available before the true beer, which we've been promised for some time in June. An irresistible musical pun on the diminished seventh chord, which is often heard in jazz, blues, gospel, and metal music. Atonal, disconcordant, but can resolve in wondrous voicings, and jubilant exhultations. Let's drink some....

Lightly hazed, golden coloring, large and lovely head, beautiful off-white foam, leaving lace. Looks great.

Aroma: Yeast first, ushering in all kinds of Belgian associations, anticipating all manner of goodness. A little bit of the wheat aromatics, perhaps, but subsumed by spicy, bready rye malt. Complex blend, intriguing mix. Light and pleasing.

Taste: A bit of the wheat texture on the tongue, a bit of that blitz, the smooth oat-y feel, and the rye factor, all at once. Like I said in the aroma, right back here in the flavor. Bright and lightly citrus-y, with very little from hops, just a touch, if any. Little hop tingle, but mostly a lush malt flavor, and a really terrific integration of these malts.

If this is the lesser version of this Seviin, the minor scale notation, then we're in for a real treat when the full orchestration fires up. It should be huge, like a ...well, not really like anything else, I'm fairly certain.

I've been waiting for Surly to turn out more Belgian-style beers, and in true Surly fashion, this one will not conform to any style standards that we know of. I'm happy for that, and very excited to taste the real version someday soon.

This small beer resembles a beer I would love for them to brew, either year-round, or as a seasonal. Someone suggested to me that it should replace Cynic, in his humble opinion, but I am not so cruel as to wish Cynic's demise. But a Belgian pale ale like this year-round, in cans, on tap? I'm on board for that, most definitely!
