Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Snifter.

Appearance: A nice wood stain red with decent light tan head.

Smell: Brown sugar, toffee, banana, clove, floral notes, and maybe a touch of citrus.

Taste: Deep malt flavors of toffee, brown sugar and caramel - reminiscent of a Barleywine. The Belgian yeast is noticeable with banana and clove. The finish is fairly spicy, partly from the clove yeast notes, partly from the rye, and partly from the hops. Some light citrus and floral aspects from the hops as well.

Feel: Full body but not chewy as expected. Extremely smooth with a dry finish. Much easier to drink than the abv would suggest. Not too boozy.

Overall: Complex but subtle. Maybe a little too subtle, as nothing really shines. However, this is dangerously drinkable. However, and while this does not impact my score, this is certainly not worth paying over twenty dollars for.

A 10 oz pour at BLB for $6
A-plenty of lively carbonation with a thin film sticking to the glass. Clear with a dark amber color with ruby highlights
S-not terribly aromatic for a Belgian. Some fruity esters (prune and molasses) with a little malt character with just a hint of Brett funk.
T/M-initial sip is beautiful. Malt and fruitiness reminiscent of a Belgian strong dark upfront and in the middle but it finishes differently as it very dry with a hint of sourness. A little boozy but highly acceptable for a 12%+ brew.
O-probably not my preferred choice for a 90F day but had to try to decide if I want to fork over $20 for a bottle. Like this brew but think it would be better served without the Brett as it totally dries this out and leaves a sour astringent taste.

This ale was orange in colour, and smelled of belgian yeasts and rye, with aromas of honey and orange. It tasted pretty good, fruity and yeasty, with a strong alcoholic flavor and finished with bitter citrus hops. Plenty of flavor with a medium body.

Would I buy this beer again? Probably.

Poured from a 750 ml waxed bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice glass.

Appearance: Pours a deep copper amber orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Big three finger off white head which slowly fades into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a good amount of creamy lacing.

Smell: A yeasty Belgian style aroma with hints of fruits, spice, and Brett funk. Belgian yeast upfront with hints of funky Brett, clove, and pepper spicing. Big fruit scent of bananas along with some dried apple and pear. Also some citrus orange hints. Belgian candied sugar along with some hints of honey. Bready malts and wheat with hints of biscuit, oats, rye spice, and caramel. Earthy hop hints in the background. Very forward on the banana and yeast. Pretty good aroma.

Taste: Like the smell hints at, a big yeasty Belgian style taste of wheat along with notes of fruit, spice, and funk. Belgian yeast with notes of clove and pepper spices and some Brett funk. Big taste of bananas and some fruit notes of apple and pear along with citrus orange. Belgian candied sugar and some sweet honey like taste. Bready malt presence with notes of wheat, biscuit, rye spice, oats, and a little caramel. Subtle bittering earthy hops towards the finish. A very nice Belgian style taste with some good banana flavors.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a medium to high level of carbonation. Creamy, spicy, and fairly juicy with a drying finish. Alcohol heat is there but tame for the high ABV.

Overall: A very good spin on a Belgian "Trappist" style beer. Very good yeasty banana flavor with some nice spicing and funk. Unique and tasty like you expect from Surly.

Poured from 750 ml bottle into a clear tulip glass.

Appearance: Pours a deep hazy golden color with a nice creamy two finger foamy head. Foam fades slowly leaving nice sticky lacing and a thin foam cap that lasts throughout.

Smell: Sweet and spicy with aromas of clove, fruit, yeast and alcohol. A very spicy Belgian ale aroma.

Taste: Much like it smells, sweet and spicy with a strong alcohol presence. Fruity and yeasty with some citrus hops in the mix. A blend of many big flavors, but nonr of them overwhelming.

Mouth Feel: Medium bodied with medium creamy carbonation. Finishes semi-sweet on the tounge with a little alcohol burn.

Overall: A very heart Belgian strong ale with a lot of spice and fruit flavors, and a nice mix of hops in there, too. I liked this, and would buy it again for sure.

A big thanks to Jeff for knocking off all these Surly Anniversary beers. 750ml waxed and capped bottle into a Brooklyn Brewery snifter. Shared with schen9303.

Pours a 1.5 finger light cream colored head with moderate retention. Beer is a bright red-orange. Lacing is stringy and web-like with great cling. Solid.

Nose is a mellow Belgian yeast mixed with intense citrus hops and cane sugar. Sappy and resiny. Aromatic and very interesting but I'm not sure I like it.

Opens citrus, starfruit and pineapple. Belgian yeast, acrid, sap hop bitterness in the middle. Cane sugar and booze at the middle and end. More sap and amber in the end with resiny hop bitterness at the finish. Sweet, sappy aftertaste. Enjoyable but a touch awkward.

Medium to full bodied with low carbonation. Oily and slick in the mouth and goes down slightly hot and aggressive. Messy finish with a filmy, light but lingering aftertaste. Pretty nice.

Not one of the better anniversary beers. The fruity flavors from the Belgian yeast and the dank, sap and resin hop bitterness just don't quite work together. This is a decent beer but not quite my style.
