A= Pours a dark amber color with a nice active two fingers of head that holds up pretty well and leaves beautiful lacing on the glass.

S= The smell is at first reminiscent of a nice clean brewery for some reason. After that I get a nice hop punch followed by the Belgian yeast coming in with some peppery and banana notes. Wheat makes itself present but in a less dominate way.

T= The taste on this beer starts with a nice Belgian yeast punch. Peppery bananas with a nice hop bite. There is also a bit of an alcohol bite. This beer is gonna knock me on the ass I can already tell. The wheat is sort of soothing and coating in a way. I don't get much rye or oat from it. The oats may be contributing to the coating mouthfeel of it.

M= Coating

O= Seven years in the books. This beer I thought was an bit of an "easy" job for the seventh anniversary. I was wrong. This beer holds a lot of complexities to it. It's unique and something I didn't expect Surly to make. My favorite? Prolly not. While it's a crazy unique beer and it is delicious I'm just not a big fan of the strong Belgian yeast presence. Who knows though you may love it. The great thing about Surly is that they try their best to make enough beer for everyone who wants some enjoy.

Poured from 750 ml bottle into a clear tulip glass.

Appearance: Pours a deep hazy golden color with a nice creamy two finger foamy head. Foam fades slowly leaving nice sticky lacing and a thin foam cap that lasts throughout.

Smell: Sweet and spicy with aromas of clove, fruit, yeast and alcohol. A very spicy Belgian ale aroma.

Taste: Much like it smells, sweet and spicy with a strong alcohol presence. Fruity and yeasty with some citrus hops in the mix. A blend of many big flavors, but nonr of them overwhelming.

Mouth Feel: Medium bodied with medium creamy carbonation. Finishes semi-sweet on the tounge with a little alcohol burn.

Overall: A very heart Belgian strong ale with a lot of spice and fruit flavors, and a nice mix of hops in there, too. I liked this, and would buy it again for sure.

Have to compliment Surly on some very nice label art here, even by their own high standards.

A: Cloudy copper/brown with a light white head.
S: Sweet and fruity apple pear, Belgian yeast is very bold, brettanomyces mustiness floral hops. Excellent, the most enjoyable attribute of the beer for me.
T: Starts fruity and sweet again until brett cuts in pretty forcefully. Rustic and earthy. A little spice/roughness, which could either be the rye and/or the 12% abv? Just enough bitterness to cut the sweetness. Brett is a little agressive here for my tastes.... Finishes dry with a slight alcohol burn.
M: Body is full, with ample carbonation. Chewy, almost heavy.

Not bad, but seems the sum total doesn’t equal the parts. Heavy, a little dull and overbretted. Not something I would buy again.
