White head. Color is a golden orange.

Flavor profile: Lots of wine flavors and oak. Grapes and tannin. Yeasty.Very funky for a surly brew. A bit sour, but not tart. Cherries and some other fruit flavors.

Mouthfeel: Lighter bodied. Decent amount of carbonation. Ends a little dry, but pretty clean.

Overall, one of my favorite beers from surly. Very drinkable. Great flavors.

Served in a 10 oz darkness snifter in the tap room.
A-a burnt hazy golden color with a thin white head that quickly recedes to a thin film on the glass.
S-sweet funky earthy aroma with a noticeable white wine aroma. Spicy phenols here too.
T-a bit sour upfront with a sweet white wine taste. A bit black peppery with a dry finish
M-plenty of tingly carbonation with a warming finish. Not much body with a very dry tart finish.
O-tastes like a lot of wild beers. Fairly easy to drink with moderate funkiness and sourness with a white wine quality. Needs some more barley or "beery" flavor for my tastes.

On tap at Surly's taproom. 10 oz. serving in a Surly Darkness chalice.

Appearance: Color is a bright and somewhat hazy golden orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. About one finger of white head that slowly recedes into a thin patchy layer. Leaves a decent amount of lacing.

Smell: A very funky and yeasty Belgian style aroma with lots of fruit esters. Belgian yeast upfront with some farmhouse funk, white and black peppers, and clove. Huge scent of Brett funk with a white wine presence. Fruit hints of banana, cherry, pear, orange, pineapple, apricot, and peach. Pale malt with hints of grains, straw, and crackers. Subtle earthy hop hints in the background. A pretty solid aroma.

Taste: Like the aroma hints at, a very funky Belgian yeast driven taste with lots of fruity notes. Belgian yeast notes with some farmhouse funk, clove, and some white and black pepper. A very big taste of the Brett funk giving some sour white wine notes. Fruity notes of bananas, pear, tart cherry, pineapple, orange, apricot, and peach. Bready pale malt presence with notes of grains, straw, and cracker. Very forward with the sour funk. Pretty good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a medium to high level of carbonation. Sour, fruity, and pretty drying on the finish. Pretty smooth with well masked alcohol.

Overall: Another very good Brett beer from Surly. This is like a Cynic mixed with Pentagram. Nice combination of farmhouse esters with the Brett.

on-tap, brouwers

hazy orange body - very brett forward, some nice barrel notes, chardonnay, hay, wood, white pepper, clove. This was a nice beer - a nice prelude to heavier barrel aged beers on this day. Pentagram was a dud, but misanthrope is solid

Favorite style from my favorite brewery. On-tap at Muddy Waters in Minneapolis. Tasted 15 January 2014, reviewed from notes.

Pours mostly clear medium-dark golden yellow. One finger of white head. Excellent retention and astounding lacing.

Smell is amazing. Has those slightly moldy funky notes from the brett, complemented so well by the white wine. Both light and ethereal, and earthy and funky, at the same time. Light-brightness, nearly perfect.

Taste is white wine heavy and not as clean or as potently saison as the smell. I get a little more funk and spice in the back as it warms, hanging out back there with golden grains. But the wine overpowers the rest of the beer.

Feel is a little funny. A bit too vinous - flat and slick.

The smell carries it a long way, but not all the way. It gets better as it warms. Overall, it's stellar, but I want more beer, less wine.
