I first heard about Surly from a homebrewing podcast from Minnesota called BrewingTV and the combination of Metal, the branding and the reputation of the beer made me curious from day one. I've even brewed two of the clone recipes in lou of being able to try the real thing. I finally was able to try some of their beers when a friend stopped through MN and picked up a couple of 4 packs Hell, Coffee Bender and Furious - they didn't disappoint.

Early October of 2014 I finally paid a visit to the brewery (with only 3 weeks before they moved to their new monster location). The tap room was smaller then what I envisioned, but it was only about half full so that made no difference. With "Todd The Axe Man", "Damien", "Pentagram" and a beer from the Uncle Acid show on draft among the year round offerings.. I was a happy camper.

No waits to get beer, we got our name on the tour list for 5 and we had plenty of time to try a few different beers while we waited. The merch area had a great selection of glassware and shirts along with some cool prints.

The tour guide was well spoken and played metal during the intro, provided a history timeline of the brewery Todd and Omar along with where they where heading with the new brewery. (did I mention it was free?)

Overall great time, I can't wait to see the new facility and book one of the special hard hat tours.

I really enjoyed this place back when Omar still gave tours. It is impressive how far they have come and I will always drink abrasive ale and darkness when given the opportunity. In the earlier years, you could tell their true passion and hard work was evident in everything they did (I would have given the place a rating of 5/5). Darkness, Surly 2 and abrasive remain some of my top beers of all time. Unfortunately, I will say that it isn't quite the same anymore (though I still enjoy this place and thus the 4.2 rating), last tour I was on, I felt I knew more than the guide (maybe it was his first go at it?). The attitude seems to have shifted over the years from hard working, innovative passion to - how do we get this fancy new brewery going so we can get ridiculously large and make a lot of money (not a bad thing, just not as cool as the old attitude of we are pioneers and we do things differently and we are the little engine that could). They have incredible demand for their beer and like any company in growth mode, it is tough to keep the same focus. I still think highly of them, I like their Surly gives a damn campaign and give them a lot of credit for getting to where they are.
