Located across the steet from Das Ambräusianum and across and down the street from Schlenkerla, one might wonder why stop at Kachelofen? Well, the answer is that they serve fresh St. Georgenbräu Kellerbier (and Hefeweizen and Pils). Add to that the fact that you can sit outside on the sidewalk under one of their big umbrellas on a sunny day, and this place is definitely worth a visit. If you are not in the mood for St. Georgenbräu, they also serve Schlenkerla Rauchbier and Weizen.

Inside this is a fairly typical Franconian Gasthaus with a full menu, though it always seems dimly lit inside compared to outside on the sidewalk in the shadow of the hill up to the cathedral. I have always had good service while sitting outside. Still, nice and cozy inside, with the large, green tile oven (of the place's name) inside (not sure if this oven is in working order though).

Worth a stop in the altstadt for some kellerbier!

We came in here after being in Ambrosinium across the street (though could not get in at first, both inside and out being jam packed with wretched tourists!!) We got in about 2pm, and with it being wet outside, went into the small but very cosy bar room. Very attractively decorated. Service was excellent and the staff were very friendly and keen to make an impression on their English visitors! Naturally, we came for the outstanding St Georgen Keller Bier, which was very good. Served in the typical crock jug, light in colour, yet fresh and bright, with a much stronger hoppy bitter finish than most keller beers.

We chatted for sometime with the staff, who were welcoming and interested in making an impression, so we left here very happy.

Incidently, the new NO Smoking Ban inside bars and restaurants in Germany has made a big difference, expecially in the smaller bars, where you can now breath easy! The staff told us the ban has had little impact on trade, as most Germans are used to sitting outside or in a beer garden anyhow, so little has changed (unlike in England, where trade has dropped dramatically in some pubs since the ban 2 years ago)

Would visit this attractive little bar again, and would recommend it - even if not a great range of beers, worth it for the Keller Bier.

UPDATE JUNE 2011

We visited this bar twice during a week stays in Bamberg, and enjoyed it very much. The St Georgen Keller beer is very tasty, and the food we had in the evening was also good. Service from the busy staff was always attentive, and the interior is very cosy. This might just be my favourite Bamberg bar, though with being small, it's not always possible to get in.

Stopped in this Beer Bar just because it was on the road to my car after visiting the beautiful town of Bamberg. And this is pretty strange because we started our tour of Germany with all the right beer places to visit taken from the BeerFly section. So it is good to know that someone find this place a good place. We had just bought a full load of smoked beers, even if I've never drunk one and I was just curious to have one. I didn't imagine that Kachelofen Fränkisches Gasthaus offers St. Georgenbräu Kellerbier fresh every day, so I stick with a Schlenkerla Marzen. We sat on the outside, under the big umbrellas and had our beers. The service was quick and precise, we gave a look to the menu, everything looked appetizing but it was 4 PM and we are no Germans, so we could not have schwein haxe at that time! This Bar is in a good place, not far from the city centre and from the "little Venice", you can sit outside, have what you want, chat with someone who take place next to you on the big long tables, or just look people passing by. For sure there are better panoramas in Bamberg, but this is friendly and relaxing.

Worth a stop, indeed.

When you go to Bamberg you'll surely visit Schlenkerla, Spezial, Fässla, Klosterbräu and maybe the two fine bars in Wunderburg: Mahrs and Keesman. Great but so predictable, you know. So, why not give a chance for places like Kachelofen, Cafe Abseits and Stöhrenkeller.

Kachelofen is a small bierstube with some half a dozen tables outside. Inside it is very cozy. The main reason for the most of the visitors is St. Georgenbräu beer from Buttenheim. They brew definetely one of the best kellerbiers in the area. It is always fresh here.

I've have tried their soups and apfelstrudel. Unexpected combination but very good.
