Bottle. Golden, clear with nice thick, medium, white head. Good lacing. Average lasting. Starts with nice malty character, nice medium citrus zesty aroma, touch of tropical fruits. Light to medium bitter, orange peel, grapefruit, light resing flavours. Almost medium bodied, smooth, lively carbonation semi-dry. Finish is bittersweet. Very refreshing beer. Nice, well balanced, refreshing an very drinkable IPA. Solid.

I had this on cask at churchkey. I realize this is an English IPA and it is meant to be this way, but I just don't enjoy these non-hoppy IPAs. Kind boring.

16.9 oz bottle into a wine glass.

Appearance: Pours a light straw color - and I do mean straw color. The head is two fingers high, with a white shade and a foamy texture. Retention is pretty good - combined with the aforementioned texture, it leaves behind a lot of lacing. (3.75)

Smell: There are a lot of interesting hop notes. I'm picking up a ton of typically English hop notes (earth, flowers, spice, and marmalade), primarily. However, the floral notes also take on a grassy tone, redolent of a good Czech pilsner. And there even seems to be some Cascade thrown in for good measure! The malt backbone is...well, there isn't any, actually. Hops dominate; big, grassy, floral, slightly fruity hops. Basically, it's a properly English IPA brewed to American extremes. (4)

Taste: Lots of English hops make themselves known - this beer is absolutely loaded with notes of earth, grass, flowers, apricot, and marmalade. At first, the hoppiness seems a touch rough, but giving it a few more patient sips will smooth it out almost perfectly. As it warms up, I'm starting to pick up a lot of grapefruity notes. In spite of what the nose suggested, there are a hint of cookie-like malts appearing on the back end - and it's just enough. Despite the low maltiness, it's quite complex. And enjoyable, too, can't forget enjoyable. (4)

Mouthfeel: Phenomenally light and crisp. Even better, it's delicate. Seriously, how many IPAs can truly be considered delicate? It's not bone dry, though I don't really care. Carbonation is around average for the style. (4)

Overall: Why aren't more English-style IPAs brewed like this? The more I drink this beer, the more I realize Thornbridge really know what they're doing. If I could get this recipe fresher and in 6 packs, this would become one of my go-to IPAs - it says a lot that I'd buy it again considering how hard it is to find fresh in the US (plus, it's a bit pricey here). A lot of American brewers could learn from these guys - people, you don't need crystal malt to balance an IPA's hoppiness. Not at all. (4)

3.99/5: An English IPA taken to its delicious extremes
