A 500ml bottle with a BB of June 2011. The front label is shiny with an interesting damask background - cool and unusual. The back label mentions that this beer is the result of a collaboration with Birrifico Italiano, who bring lager expertise to bear on the production process.

Poured into a Guinness pint glass. A pale golden hue with light haziness and strong carbonation. Produces a large white head that subsides after a few minutes. Aroma of light malt with subtle citrus and floral notes. It looks superb, and smells promising....

The taste is light and dry. Pale malt with fruity hop notes - a grapefruit flavour is discernible. Slight graininess and acidity. Mouthfeel is mildly astringent; there is a faint bitter/fruity aftertaste.

Rather good for a lager - it has a subtle but distinctive flavour. This would go down nicely on a hot day, with the fruity notes making it particularly refreshing.

On a personal note, whilst it was good it was also pretty expensive at £3.50 a bottle. There are other quality lagers available at a lower price.

Perhaps it's a mood thing. I love a lager as much as the next drunkard, but there was something about the floral-ality of Italia that didn't hit the mark for me.

It wasn't going to be Tipopils, granted. But it wasn't Extra Hop, either. It's all rather herbal and challenging, not crisp and quenching.

Perhaps I look for less in a pils? I'll have to work my way through a case one sunny summer weekend and re-rate, I suppose.
