Umbrella India Pale Ale is brewed exclusively with Australian grown Ella Hops. The use of Ella hops offers an aroma that is filled with gooseberry and bright fruit. The fresh and zippy Ella hops are nicely balanced by a clean and light pale malt character.

OLD REVIEW recovered. 2015.

Pours a clear deep golden colour with a large thick and rocky white head. Very strong fruity, zesty, juicy hop aromas..one dimensional maybe but mouth watering. Same in the taste as in the nose..more lime and lemon zest hops..almost some spearmint aspects in the end..good. Mouth feel is fine for style medium body and medium carbonation goes down well. What can i say a one dimensional but very fine IPA on a muggy night in The Valley.

a really tasty ipa from pelican, who seems to do everything well. i didnt know this was single hopped with ella when i drank it, but i recognized it as distinct and different right away. im not sure i knew ella to be this bold and expressive, i have had it in my head as a softer, milder, herbaceous varietal, but it does more here than that, and seems very highly dosed, maybe the boldest expression of it i have known in a beer so far, and i really like it. more brewers should use this one like this, it really pops. lime leaf, white currant, lemon balm, and elderflower all come to mind here, more fruity than i thought it could be, a hint of passion fruit too maybe, juicy in a new way, and on top of such a mild tasting grain base the hops really sing in here, incredibly fresh as well. unique herbal notes like holy basil and verbena come out as well, dry and cerealy on the grain side, and clean on the fermentation. simple beer from a recipe standpoint it seems like, but these unique hops are really at their best here. super drinkable for its strength too, light in body, and nice with spicy food. this was a pleasant surprise yesterday, and ill have to keep an eye out for more beers featuring these ella hops. i really liked this.

22oz bottle picked up at Ballinger Thriftway in Mountlake Terrace, Washington.
Bottle is dated 2/21/19... old, wish I had noticed that before purchasing. Served in a pint glass.

Look- Nice clear, bright gold color, lingering modest white head that leaves a minimal amount of lacing. Lots of carbonation visible in the glass as it sits.

Smell- Kiwi, green grapes, slight citrus, floral spice and a bit of slightly skunky hops.

Taste- Kiwi takes a back seat as a generic tropical flavor. The taste is primarily lemon/lime pith and green grape skin, bitter and dry. Some skunk.

Feel- Light bodied with crisp carbonation on the tongue. Semi-dry.

O- A lot like a bitter 7up. Albeit my bottle is old, I can't see this being more than one dimensional, even fresh. Not my favorite Pelican offering. If I decide to try this again, I will update my review.

So. Ella hops. Hunh.
I've become very comfortable with the Citra-Simcoe-Amarillo-Mosaic show, so these Ella hops really threw me for a loop.
Aroma is old-school England IPA.
The first taste came as a slight shock...more bready, earthy, and the hops come across as more bitter than 'fruity' as they are advertised. But after about three good sips, the taste grew on me.

Quite different. Interesting, though I don't think this would become my go-to IPA flavor.
I'm noticing this brewery more and more. Seems to be shaking off the current beer climate and proceeding with big ideas.

Copper filtered with moderate carbonation, and 4 fingers of off white head.

Smells of malts, apple juice, white grapes and slightly floral.

Tastes very light, of white grape juice, apple juice, and a light bitterness.

Light body, and moderate carbonation.

Got in Sacramento, drinking in Redding, Sept 24th, 2018. Very Kolsch like to me.

Pours a cloudy urine yellow. Not being gross, it just is what it. Aroma is pleasant, pretty much exactly what you'd expect from an IPA. Taste is well executed. again, exactly as you'd expect it to taste like. The best way to describe this beer is workmanlike. That's not an insult...it is just that it is EXACTLY what you'd expect. No surprises, just a perfectly executed genre beer.
