I see most reviewers have tried this one with some age, I figure I would review a young bottle. Vintage 2009. Poured from a 750mL caged, corked, and gold-foil covered bottle into my Troubadour tulip glass.

Enormous beedy head fills the glass, leaving little room for the liquid at first. Rather than recede rapidly like I feared, it becomes increasingly rocky and maintains a fist-sized layer of merengue for a very long time, with tendrils of sticky yet soapy lacing. A few grains of yeast punctuate the head like specs of dirt. The liquid is bright but misty amber with golden/selective yellow highlights - its sunny incandesence brings back memories of Summer days readily.

Malt presents as a persistent bland wheat aroma, but the Glacier hops adds a unique touch - apple pear, kumquat, and lemon zest. No spice or funk really.

Bitter orange, lemon, feed grass, and a bit of honey on the palate. Some phenols in the finish, along with grape-skins, yeast, and enough carbonation and bitterness to dry things up nicely. The pale malt keeps reminding me of an APA though (wonder how this compares to Sierra Nevada's Brown Saison?) Over time, you begin to notice the addition of spelt, which adds an undercurrant of rustic "whole-wheat" complexity to the affair.

Boiling with carbonation, quite effervescent, slightly creamy body but light enough to be very refreshing and quaffable.

This is a decent domestic rendition of the style (and I prefer it to those that insist on putting an American stamp on Saison through the addition of piney hops), but you won't mistake it for something brewed in Flanders.

Good but doesn't present a good value compared to say, Saison de Lente or Smutty-Nose Farmhouse Ale (both of which I find superior).

2007 Vintage consumed in July of 2009. Split with my wife in two Saison Dupont glasses.

Major pop of the cork. A 20 minute process to pour given the massive amount of foam that settles with crazy surface head.

Settles to a beautiful hazy golden color. Incredibly unique aroma that I don't recall from other Saisons. Best described as an attractive flat spice with some element of rubber. Doesn't sound appealing but is.

Head turns a bit dirty brown. Flavor is a touch of sweetness upfront and a dry finish. Full mouthfeel with noticeable spice and a snap of flavor and richness.

bottled 8/07, roughly a year and a half old.

a: This was a slightly hazy golden yellow. It oured with a huge, sticky, and fizzy white head.

s: Spicy, yeasty aromas of peppery cloves and earthy grains.

t: Dry and spicy overall with a mildly funky finish. Clove flavors linger for awhile.

m: Moderatelt fizzy carbonation with a thick, chewy body.

d: The last of the brews I brought back from Oregon. Not quite a great example of the style, but it is quite good. Age has treated this well.

Reviewed on 10/12/08. Bottle courtesy of bitbucket, bottled 08/2007. Pours a slightly hazy orange with a thick, foamy white head. Aroma of melon, Belgian yeast, light fruits. Flavor of light fruits, orange zest, citrusy fruits, and grapefruit with a hint of vegetal qualities in the finish. Nice saison.

Bottled in Jan. 2007, so this has been aging for close to 2 yrs. Poured into a large snifter.

A: Bright orange/gold, with a couple of fingers of off-white head even with a gentle pout. Plenty of carbonation bubbling up from underneath. Not much lacing, but this is an impressive looking brew otherwise.

S: I was having a hard time picking up anything more than a vaguely floral character and a small bit of fruit. No funkiness, not a lot of complexity.

T: Much more lively in the mouth than on the nose. Lots of fruitiness- tangerine, apple, pear, banana, pineapple. Very little spiciness and no funkiness that I can detect. A surprising bite of dry finish. It's definitely pleasant to drink, but not exactly what I was expecting with a saison.

M: Light and smooth, very pleasant for about 1/2 a glass. The carbonation started dying down a bit after that, but still pretty good.

D: Not bad, and pretty refreshing, but lacking in complexity. A rare dud from Pelican.

SAISON DU PELICAN bottled on January 2007. This bottle has had 20 months to age and get delicious.

Appearance-- Poured into my over-sized snifter, a very large three and half fingers worth of tight head emerges. The lacing is good, but not great as is the head retention. The beer itself is a nice golden-orange.

Smell-- The first thing I thought when I took a whiff of this was shortbread cookies. I'm guessing it's from the faint buttery diacetyl that shows up in taste and the spelt they used. Anyways, after I stop thinking about cookies, I get plenty of fruits: mandarin orange, pear and maybe a bit of sweet red apple. There is also a pronounced spiciness present. I'd go with mostly coriander and pepper. I had to take some extremely deep sniffs, but there is a faint medicinal funk in there. There should probably be more for the style, but the aroma is pleasant nonetheless.

Taste-- Sweet orange, pears and bananas with a slight diacetyl butteryness that lingers throughout but never gets overbearing. I was worried it would be overpowering butter and coriander when the taste first hit, but that's not the case at all. Just when you think that this beer might be too fruity, a good spice comes in and takes the flavor on home. I like the way they went with this, but since they ignored the funk, I would have loved to see them amp up the clove. It would have blended perfectly with this fruit profile.

Mouthfeel-- Pretty close to spot on for the style, but a bit thin for my personal taste and the carbonation is just a tad low.

Drinkability-- This beer goes down easy and doesn't really grow tiresome. If not for the big price tag I could put down a few of these on a warm day and be very content. I would have really enjoyed more clove or funk, but I don't regret giving this beer a shot. Pelican is 2 for 2 with this guy. I need to make the 2 hour drive to the brewery sometime soon.

Wow, this is easily one of my favorite Saisons. I've had this one hidden for over a year and decided to give it a try tonight. It pours a clear gold. If you are fan for the mass produced beers you'll find this one very much right there in color. It gives a lot of head no matter how you pour it. So it'll take a little bit to get to the drinking. The aroma has a lot flowery spices jumping out here. Upon first taste I got some banana in there and what I think was nutmeg. You also get some carbonation in there but it's not over powering. Mouth feel does leave something to be desired. It's almost a sour after taste in there. I like how this one came out.

Appearance: Pours a nice hazy, light amber color with a big head that dissipates far too quickly thought the bubbles create some lacing patterns

Smell: Just can't say this is a great aroma; quite phenolic, with pear and bandaids providing the dominant character; I'm not picking up the spices and earthy, farmhouse elements that I had hoped would be present

Taste: My concerns about the aroma are reflected in the flavor; opens with a fruity, pear flavor that adds just a hint of pepper by mid-palate; after the swallow is where the real problems begin, with the flavor becoming rather chalky; in the end, the pear and sweet, though medicinal phenols persist, but fail to entice

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body but somewhat flat, despite the buoyant carbonation

Drinkability: Having really enjoyed the other beers from Pelican that I have tried, I came to this with high hopes; the other BAs who have reviewed this beer have not been wrong, however; the recipe needs some work, but I am optimistic that Pelican can improve this beer - their other beers are too good to allow this one to bring them down

2007 Vintage. Sunshine amber with a faint orangish blush. The beer is chock full of yeast and loads of uprushing carbonation that qualifies as Champagne-like. Unfortunately, the massive, airy, unsticky crown isn't very Belgian ale-like. It melts too quickly and leaves no more than a smattering of sea foam lace on the glass.

The aroma is more Belgian pale ale than saison. Of course, those two styles have quite a bit in common. What it isn't: earthy, musty or barnyardy. What it is: orchard fruity with a wonderful, lightly spicy, clove-like Belgian yeastiness. It smells as if sweet, tangy and bitter will be present in roughly equal measure.

Saison Du Pelican is one of the peach juiciest ales... ever. It took me a moment to nail it down, but the spiced peach esters are impossible to ignore. Ripe mango is present as well. If you like your saisons to be fruity, only slightly phenolic, light and well-bubbled, then this ale should be right up your alley. I'm still trying to decide if it's up mine.

There isn't a great deal of complexity or a great deal of depth. Although the flavors that are present are pleasant, a few more facets to this less than sparkling saison/farmhouse jewel would do wonders. At least the yeast gives it a hint of authenticity, even if it would never be confused with a true Belgian saison.

Pale malt keeps things flavor-neutral, while providing just a touch of sweetness. Might some amount of candi sugar have been used? An herbal hoppiness keeps things balanced from the sweet-bitter perspective (without adding much hop flavor) and the spicy phenols are a fraction more prominent with warming.

Beer of this style is supposed to be light and well-carbonated. However, most world-class saisons have a soft expansiveness about them that makes them a pleasure to drink. SDP has harsh bubbles in the beginning, passes through its sweet-spot quickly, and becomes too tame by mid-bottle.

Saison Du Pelican is a decent effort from a brewery that has little experience with this style. If the brewers could figure out how to wring a little more complexity from the yeast strain and could nail down the carbonation/mouthfeel, the beer might impress as much as the packaging.

Poured from a 750ml bottle, after having to remove the last half of the cork with a corkscrew, into my La Chouffe tulip. Saison Du Pelican is a pale yellow with slight haze and a big, fluffy, rocky white head, that is slow to retreat, leaving behind hunks of foam clinging to the glass.

Smell has a nice soft, candi sweetness, cork, bread dough and citrus zest. Moderate strength, something is a little unusual, almost tinny, mabye cork rot?

The taste is not really the same as the nose, not too sweet, with more yeast, hop bitteness and grain tannins. Not as metallic as the aroma, with light cork and some wheat sourness, that goes well with the tart citrus aspects. Very dry and minerally, again, do I suspect the cork, or noble hop spice? Or is it all saison yeast pepperiness? Maybe a tad heavy-handed in that regard, but rather nice overall, although I prefered the Joseph bier I had earlier, which is similarly made with spelt, but without the corkiness.

The mouthfeel creamy, but has a thickness from the suspended yeast, resulting in a medium to heavy body for the style.

This was pretty drinkable, but not my favorite example of the style, which happens to be my favorite.

bottle indicates that this brew was packaged in january of 2007.

i easily tear through the foil wrap, and chuckle at the homebrewiness of the "s" written on the gold cage top. i twist and remove it, and see some sort of grey ooze underneath. this makes me nervous, so i decide to touch it. it's slick and kind of hardened to the cork. what the christ is it? i pop the cork and it releases itself with a muted pop. on the underside of the cork is equally strange mystery slime.. this side is wetter. obviously some sort of mold or fungus, the presence of the organism takes its toll on my beer appetite. a few minutes later, i pour the beer, carefully. it decants beautifully, clear and golden orange, full of tiny crazed bubbles. the head is majestic and fluffy, fizzing and fading fast. lace left like airy meringue.

nose approaches and woah! holy lemon cupcakes! this beer smells like a sweet freshly-baked dessert item. the only thing that cuts through the breadiness is a slight must (presumably from said ooze) and the crystal clear crisp belgian yeast strain. a tad too much buttery velvet but extremely appetizing nonetheless. ok, my stomach is no longer turned.

excellent mouthfeel. starts with a tart zing and the rush of carbonation activating on my tongue. bitter at first, dry, revealing hints of lemongrass and blueberry tannins. malt flavors are somewhat vacant, and i'm not sure i like the way the bitterness lingers empty without a counterbalancing sweet flavor. if it just tasted a little more like it smells, there might be a moticum of balance. not really though, what happened here?? at times, the bitterness is so sharp it jabs a steel pin into my sinuses like a nice hit of wasabi or a reverse soda burp expelled through the nose. warmth helps the beer show some flavor. a little of the butter is noticeable as well as some dandelion but malt.. where the fuck is the malt? i'm all for a spicy, airy saison.. but this is just crazy.

i don't hate this beer.. there are things i really like about it. it just fails to come together in a way that makes its experimental nature seem like a bit of a failure. good enough to give the next batch a try, not good enough to seek out this batch again.

A: Lot of carbonation built up in this corked 750ml bottle, the cork came off with a bang. Once the beer was poured, foam dominated the glass for a good few minutes. Once the sudsy off white head reseeded, a light Chablis colored brew remained with a few meandering streams of bubbles working their way to the surface.

S: Very fresh and lively. Reminds me of a breeze on a spring day. Floral hops, spicy pollen, basil, lemon, toasted baguette and loads of yeast.

T: Begins lightly malted with hints of clover honey, dry molasses, flaky biscuits. Quickly the spiciness of the hops take over and really dominate both the flavor and the overall sensation in the mouth. Slightly acidic with moments of over ripe green apple, lemon juice, grass clippings and pine apple. Finishes with minor tropical flavors, some yellow apple and a lot of metallic twangs.

M: Medium body, full and soft mouthfeel.

D: Good saison and very refreshing. But in the industry saisons are starting to pop up all over and this one really doesn’t stand out from the crowd. Good but not great. But what do I know, saisons aren’t one of my favorite styles.

I really enjoyed this beer. Maybe a little more hopped than most Sasions out there, but it is an american take on the style so that's okay. Really pretty bottle too. Pelican has impressed me lately, their doing some good things our there on the coast.

The taste is nice and complex with notes of fruit and citrus and a clean yeast ending. Very nice as it warms too. I'd say this is one of the better sasions I've had this year. Grab one if you can find one, their website says they've sold out for the 2007 year.

From a 750ml bottle, corked and caged. ABV is not listed on the bottle. $12.99 retail.

A slow pour yielded a slightly hazy straw-yellow ale with ample frothy head (ala Duvel) which slowly disappears leaving behind spotty lacing. The nose is grassy, herbal and biscuity with a hint of lemon: very pleasing indeed. Flavors up front are slightly barnyardy, followed by notes of coriander, canteloupe, and pineapple(?). The finish is crisp and dry. On the palette it is medium to full bodied with a somewhat creamy texture and stinging carbonation. I would rate drinkibilty good as well, albeit with ignorance about it's strength... and it is quite filling.

This is one fine ale in the style: be sure to pick some up before it disappears.
