Draught pint at the brewery, black with a small tan head that left light lace.

Smell is soft, dusted coco and coffee.

Taste is also rather soft, roasty, with more coffee then chocolate, and a dry finish. Very smooth and balanced, although I'd prefer a bit more umph. Also, I prefer a slightly sweeter export stout. Served too cold, it didn't really open up in the 30 mins or so over which I sipped it.

Mouthfeel is full and velvety, although I'd like a bit more carbonated creaminess.

Drinkability is just above average. While it's a nicely rounded and well executed stout, and drinks lighter then 7% ABV, it just didn't excite me to much.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a Sam Smith pint glass. Pours jet black with tan foam. Thick creamy head that hangs around for a long time. Very well presented.

Aromatic. Rich roasted malts. Coffee hints.

Taste is deep and rich. Some hints of chocolate. Roasted. An overriding hop prescence throughout. Tasty, complex.

Enjoyable to taste, but honestly 22 oz was a lot to put down. The taste was very rich, the hop was present throughout. This one's a sipper. Schedule some time to work through it. Its worth it, but not something you can do quickly.

Appearance- Pours up a fair amount of head which looks to have fairly good retention. The head is a dark beige/mocha color while the body is pitch black and remains that way when held up to the light. Lacing is pretty much nonexistent.

Nose- There is a significant aroma of roasted malts with hints of chocolate and coffee but I do wish for it to be stronger. The bottle seems to hint at smoke. Swirling doesn't do too much to intensify the aroma; it simply reveals a bit of sourness to the roasted malts. Overall, the aroma is nice but could be more conspicuous. There is some breadiness and sweet malt on the nose as well.

Taste- Very reflective of the aroma with more punch. Roasted malts dominate this matched with coffee bitterness which finishes the flavor profile. While some have mentioned noticeable heat, I haven't sensed any. What this beer has in presence, it seems to lack in complexity. There is nothing wrong with the flavor profile but it is quite dominated by the espresso (or coffee) elements that the label mentions. Some hints of sourness and a bit of fruitiness are tucked underneath. Slight notes of chocolate as well. A solid beer but kind of boring in comparison to all the great stouts out there. Also seems to effectively match the style requirements. I really need to compare this to some Guinness Foreign Extra Stout.

Mouthfeel- Medium bodied with light carbonation. Seems a little thin for a stout but this is not a major issue.

Drinkability- If you like beers which taste like coffee (which I do), this is pretty drinkable. I only wish there was more complexity to keep me interested.

Overall- A good beer which meets the style requirements. Worth a try and has a nice price tag. I think this is cheaper than Guinness per ounce but my memory seems to tag Guinness Foreign Extra Stout as being slightly better.

Bottle received in a trade with a generous BA thanks.

Appearance: Pours a very attractive dark brown to black with a 1.5 finger dirty khaki crown that shows good retention and lace.

Smell: A bit of acidic soap up front with lightly roasty malt, bitter dark chocolate, and a light espresso rounding it out.

Taste: Same as nose with a touch of black currant.

Mouthfeel: A bit chewy for a medium bodied brew with good carbonation.

Drinkability: Fairly drinkable but not much going on in the flavor dept.

Pours jet black with a deep mocha colored quick to fade head, even when held to the light nothing gets thru this body.Coffee roast and molasses mainly in then nose,a bit of rawness to it.Not as creamy and full as the label suggests, its not thin or fizzy but not quite what I expected.Earthy and roasted flavors with mild molasses-like sweetness,it's a litle raw in the finish with some woody tomes. Its pretty good but not great, the sweetness creeps up more as I drink more.

bomber from my main BIFIII duck

Pours an opaque oil black. Finger of head that disappears very quickly. Little lacing.

Smells chocolate malt, maybe a little oats, some toffee.

Tastes a little sweet, maybe porter-ish. Maybe a little dry, not sure about the finish. Is that coffee flavor? Sure is quiet.

Some carbonation, but not much considering. Thin and medium bodied. Does have staying power though. Finish isnt overpowering, maybe a bit tart. No real alcohol anywher. ABV is pretty low.

Good stout. Nothing special, but pleasurable to have something different. Not deep, dont come into this beer looking for much, but you will ger a tasty, fresh and mild stout.

First Pelican beer, opened at Mike's house last night. Not sure who's bottle it is. Beer is black with a thin brown head, low carbonation and low lacing.

Aroma is a little sweet, mildly roasty.

Beer is medium to light in body forward sweetness. The finish is a little bitter and a little ashy. Its a decent beer, pretty drinkable but a little thin. I like it, FES are all about like this. Sweeter, lighter, this one is a little ashy and just OK.
