Appearance: Pours thick and dark, solid black. Very small hints of brown and red at the edges when held to direct light. Dark beige head fades, but leaves a small collar with decent retention. Some splotches of cap. Negligible lacing or carbonation.

Smell: Mega roasted malt. A hint of smoke in the back. Dark fruit abounds pushing cherry, plum, and some fig. touches of leather and stale coffee. Loaded with cocoa and dark powdery chocolate. Crazy chocolate. Some mineral undertones with a touch of floral on the back. Nicely balanced.

Taste: Cocoa powder and dark chocolate. Lots of it. Some old coffee and a solid roasted element. Dark fruit mixes through the back with cherry and plum mostly. Balanced malt sweetness with a touch of smoke through the back. Loses a little complexity as it warms, becoming crazy roasted cocoa. Hops are minimal, adding some herbal and floral notes, but little else. A hint of roasted bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with a slightly above average carbonation. Surprisingly clean finish.

Overall: Aggressive, not catastrophic waves.

A big stout without teeth. Crazy roasted and definitely drinkable. Would be better shared.

Appearance- Pours up a fair amount of head which looks to have fairly good retention. The head is a dark beige/mocha color while the body is pitch black and remains that way when held up to the light. Lacing is pretty much nonexistent.

Nose- There is a significant aroma of roasted malts with hints of chocolate and coffee but I do wish for it to be stronger. The bottle seems to hint at smoke. Swirling doesn't do too much to intensify the aroma; it simply reveals a bit of sourness to the roasted malts. Overall, the aroma is nice but could be more conspicuous. There is some breadiness and sweet malt on the nose as well.

Taste- Very reflective of the aroma with more punch. Roasted malts dominate this matched with coffee bitterness which finishes the flavor profile. While some have mentioned noticeable heat, I haven't sensed any. What this beer has in presence, it seems to lack in complexity. There is nothing wrong with the flavor profile but it is quite dominated by the espresso (or coffee) elements that the label mentions. Some hints of sourness and a bit of fruitiness are tucked underneath. Slight notes of chocolate as well. A solid beer but kind of boring in comparison to all the great stouts out there. Also seems to effectively match the style requirements. I really need to compare this to some Guinness Foreign Extra Stout.

Mouthfeel- Medium bodied with light carbonation. Seems a little thin for a stout but this is not a major issue.

Drinkability- If you like beers which taste like coffee (which I do), this is pretty drinkable. I only wish there was more complexity to keep me interested.

Overall- A good beer which meets the style requirements. Worth a try and has a nice price tag. I think this is cheaper than Guinness per ounce but my memory seems to tag Guinness Foreign Extra Stout as being slightly better.

Poured into a Due South Brewing Co. snifter. Back label says BTLD 031213.

A- Pours a deep jet black color with a 1/2 inch brown head that retains a bit before soon becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a bubbly patch of surface foam. Non-resilient lacing slides quickly down the glass leaving a jagged ring behind.

S- Dark chocolate aroma that's barely sweet with lots of dark roast coming out. Notes of coffee, molasses and a tinge of alcohol.

T- Very hearty flavor with plenty of dark roast but isn't harsh or charry. There's a moderate bitterness coming through but, unfortunately, also a not-so-moderate alcohol flavor especially in the aftertaste.

M- Lightly creamy afterfeel with medium carbonation and a body that could honestly be a bit more full.

O- If it wasn't for the excessive amount of heat in the flavor, this would be a great stout. Somewhat of a letdown.

Served from a growler into a nonic glass

A- Poured black with huge fluffy mocha colored head that left glass coating lace

S- Big roasted malt and smokiness, coffee and chocolate notes. Very pleasant aroma

T- Big roasted malt, smokiness, coffee notes, and breadiness. Some cocoa, caramel, and mineral presence. A slight twangy fruity note on the finish.

M- Soft carbonation, dry, medium to fuller bodied, very smooth

O- Really nice stout with quite a bit of smokiness that made for a very nice touch, more smokiness than an beer outside of a rauchbier that I have had.

bomber split, thanks Louie

a: served in a standard pint glass, the stout appears black, with some deep browns showing around the edges, a good mocha head to start falls back to a low level of retention

s: at first sniff the aroma is rich, but maintains a smooth balance of chocolate, roast, burnt sugars, and an earthy, grassy hop aroma

m: carbonation light to moderate, medium-full in body

t: dark chocolate and burnt sugars on the tongue, rich and creamy with sweet roasted flavors, hops earthy with a touch of grass, moderately bitter with long lingering roasts, flavorful and supremely balanced

o: a very well-brewed little stout, lots of character and everything seems to work towards the whole, drinks easily
