Bottle received in a trade with a generous BA thanks.

Appearance: Pours a very attractive dark brown to black with a 1.5 finger dirty khaki crown that shows good retention and lace.

Smell: A bit of acidic soap up front with lightly roasty malt, bitter dark chocolate, and a light espresso rounding it out.

Taste: Same as nose with a touch of black currant.

Mouthfeel: A bit chewy for a medium bodied brew with good carbonation.

Drinkability: Fairly drinkable but not much going on in the flavor dept.

Pours jet black with a deep mocha colored quick to fade head, even when held to the light nothing gets thru this body.Coffee roast and molasses mainly in then nose,a bit of rawness to it.Not as creamy and full as the label suggests, its not thin or fizzy but not quite what I expected.Earthy and roasted flavors with mild molasses-like sweetness,it's a litle raw in the finish with some woody tomes. Its pretty good but not great, the sweetness creeps up more as I drink more.

bomber from my main BIFIII duck

Pours an opaque oil black. Finger of head that disappears very quickly. Little lacing.

Smells chocolate malt, maybe a little oats, some toffee.

Tastes a little sweet, maybe porter-ish. Maybe a little dry, not sure about the finish. Is that coffee flavor? Sure is quiet.

Some carbonation, but not much considering. Thin and medium bodied. Does have staying power though. Finish isnt overpowering, maybe a bit tart. No real alcohol anywher. ABV is pretty low.

Good stout. Nothing special, but pleasurable to have something different. Not deep, dont come into this beer looking for much, but you will ger a tasty, fresh and mild stout.

First Pelican beer, opened at Mike's house last night. Not sure who's bottle it is. Beer is black with a thin brown head, low carbonation and low lacing.

Aroma is a little sweet, mildly roasty.

Beer is medium to light in body forward sweetness. The finish is a little bitter and a little ashy. Its a decent beer, pretty drinkable but a little thin. I like it, FES are all about like this. Sweeter, lighter, this one is a little ashy and just OK.

I like the FES style, thanks Derek. Smooth drinking. Dark brown with soapy head. Roast and malt nicely balanced, bitterness at the finish. Some coco, light coffee, and its in the nose too.Carbonation is suitable, medium mouthfeel.Nice balanced stout.

22oz bomber

used as the base for a pot of penn cove mussels, paired remainder with the dish

appearance: served in great taste taster chalice, deep ebony body - light garnet hue, thin creamy mocha cap

smell: deep rich aroma - charred malts, espresso, chocolate, smoke, sugars.

taste: The mussels turned out great, but the stout was a bit dry and bitter for my taste. espresso, char and smoke, heavy roasted malts, bitter bakers chocolate

mouthfeel: bitter from the roast, dry

overall: to-style, but not a style I'm too crazy about

I can't for the life of me remember who this was an extra from. Whoever it was, I thank you for this bottle and I'm excited to try it!

Poured from a bomber into my trusty Portsmouth tulip.

A- Just about as black as they come with a nice light-brown head that inflates to about two fingers high. Eventually dissipates, leaving a thin, sudsy layer of khaki foam.

S- Bitter chocolate, a bit smokey, black malt, milk chocolate, a hair of roastiness, and a twinge of alcohol on the back end. Not really a fan of the smokiness in the nose, and the overall aroma is slightly muted.

T- Fair improvement over the nose. Much more chocolate comes through, with a bit of roasted malt and coffee grounds. Pretty big flavor. I'm not the biggest fan of beers that are so heavy on the chocolate flavor, but it's still pretty good.

M- Very lively carbonation, which sort of masks the fact that the beer is just a little on the thin side. Flavors linger for a long time on the palate.

O- Overall, a pretty good offering from Pelican. Not my favorite thing in the world, but I would definitely drink it again.

Served in a Dogfish Head snifter.

Thanks to hopsbreath and the Support Your Team! BIF for this bottle!

Let it be known: Here begins my final push before the move. It will be just as epic (read: wide-ranging in terms of beer) as the post-DLD death march, and we all remember how much fun that was. This epoch shall be dubbed the Leaving Falls Church uber-bender. Let the first drops fall:

It pours an opaque black-brown topped by a finger at best of light khaki foam. The nose comprises coffee, dark roasted malts, blackened biscuits, charcoal, and a few slow, viscous drips of molasses. The taste still has strong coffee and roasted malt notes, but these are tempered by some figs, dark wheat, raisins, graham crackers, and dark chocolate powder. The body is a solid medium, with a moderate carbonation and a fairly dry finish. Overall, a nice stout; a pleasant occasional quaff, but not something I'd drink regularly.

Served in a 3 Floyds Pint Glass

Thanks to Mages64 for this want from the Most Wanted BIF

This beer pours a gorgeous blackness topped off by a nice brown foam. The smell is of roasted malts but mostly just a caramel sweetness. The flavor is composed predominantly of caramel, some dark chocolate and a touch of char. Though aside from malty sweetness and caramel flavoring the others were lost in the fray. This mouthfeel I had anticipated to have been full bodied, and this was more along the realm of medium. This is still a very good stout to drink, and I did enjoy the opportunity to have it since we don't get too much Oregonian beer in Chicago.

Thanks, cwier! Poured from bomber.

Alcohol is fairly light on this which helps its drinkability. Flavor does not stand out to me as spectacular; a dark coffee taste seems to be dominate but is subtle enough. Mouthfeel may be this one's strong suit. Certainly a drinkable stout.

3oz taster pour
Enjoyed at brewpub on 9/3/12

A: This pours out pitch black. There is no light getting through from what I can see. There is a medium color tan head. It leaves some light lacing sheeting.

S: I pull some good roast on the nose. I get hints of dark chocolate, roast coffee.

T: For the flavor, bitter dark chocolate on tip of tongue. It's not overly aggressive. Then you get some of that roast coffee meshing in nicely towards the middle. Nice malt bill to pull it all together.

M: Being an export stout, not as big. It's medium leading to full bodied, B to B+

Pours a really attractive black with a light brown, two-three inch foamy head. Very striking beer.

Smells like roasted malt, a bit of coffee, maybe even some dark chocolate in there. Kind of a straight-forward aroma, but pleasant enough.

Taste is a bit of a let down, but still good. The acrid, roasted malt with chocolate takes over, but there's a distracting, bitingly astringent and dry aftertaste that becomes offputting after a while. There's coffee, maybe even a hint of vanilla.

It's a good stout, but not elite. Mouthfeel is good.
