2012. Thanks to MrKennedy for sharing. Reviewed from notes.

Brooding blood-mahogany with an airy saffron head that falls summarily to zip.

Nicely fortified notes of rum 'n' raisin, prunes, caramel, liquorice, sour cherry, cola and mild plastic.

Barrel rises to the fore in the flavours, which are impressively rich. Sticky date pudding, muscatels, toffee apple, muscovado sugar.

Full and syrupy, but in keeping with the ABV. Similarly there's decent booze heat but it's welcome.

Immense barleywine that is easier to drink than the 2011 Stormwatchers that preceded it on the evening, but also lacks a bit of complexity. Would be interested to see whether it opens up with 5+ years of age.

2012 vintage.

This was a serious white whale for me. I love the Pelican brews, but never tracked this down. I was surprised to find it a nice little bottleshop, a bit south of the brewery in the summer.

A: Dark chestnut brown, pours with a thin tan head, no retention, no lace/leg. Not surprising for a brew of this weight.

S: Pleasant alcohol aroma (like a sherry), raisins, maraschino cherry, treacle, field berry, light spicing reminiscent of a Christmas cake.

T: Piny resin is up front; raisin, field berry and maraschino cherry through the middle (along with some light rum & spiced Christmas cake); roasted nut and dark toffee in the finish.

M: Full body is a bit syrupy with a drying alcohol finish.

O: Some may consider the malt, hop & alcohol balance a 'perfect storm'... and it is indeed impressive for a brew of this strength. Personally, I could do with a bit less alcohol and residual sweetness, and some more American hops! Though perhaps I was just expecting a more hop-forward brew like most of their lineup. This is seriously good (and improves as it warms).
