Pint at the brewpub. Appereance is black, with a small tan head. No lace$

Smell is estery, the fruitiness of the saison yeast is prominent, and with the dark malt comes across as black cherries. A touch on the mild side.

Taste also marked by the esters, but with the acidity of the malt comes off more like raspberry. The base stout is rich, with firm char, roast and bitterness.

Mouthfeel is med+.

Drinkability is high. This is my house saison yeast for homebrew, so. I'm a big fan of it's flavors. The stout itself is solid, and they meld well.

Listed by the brewery as a "Belgian Stout", but no BA listing for that style. Served in straight pint glass. Poured a nearly solid black, with about 3/4 inch of light brown head that had low retention and no lacing.

The aroma was pretty featureless, light roast and a hint of Belgian yeasty sweetness. On the tongue, the base stout flavors provided the foundation, the yeast played around the edges, the roast was noticeable, but not overpowering.

The body was smooth and even, but a bit thinner than I would have expected. Drinkability was good, my pint went down easily, and I might have another. Overall, not the mess I was expecting, which isn't the back-handed compliment it sounds like. Worth a shot if you see it.
