Poured into tulip...

A: Pours a dark brown amber hue with a huge four finger frothy tan head. Very creamy in appearance, falls slowly with great retention and thick sticky lacing.

S: Not a huge aroma, faint nutty aroma, bread, slightly malty.

T: Wow, the flavor is so much bigger than the nose. Big malt upfront with lots of hazelnut and brown sugar, not too sweet with nice bread characteristics. Good amount of hops, well balanced for a brown, not too sweet, not too hoppy.

M: Medium body with nice carbonation, big bubbles, long finish of bready malt with a clean and dry finish of hops. Might be a little heavy for the style.

D: Very drinkable brown, great example of the style. This is what I look for in a brown ale!

Enjoy by July 27, 2014.

It pours brown with reddish highlights, a good 2 finger head of foam that shrinks slowly, leaving almost a complete layer on top of the beer.

The smell is a mix of roasted malt, a hoppy bitterness that almost borders on being fruity, and some notes of sweet malt.

In the taste, there seems to be a nice balance amongst the smells I noted above. It's very smooth and tasty and very easy to drink. I just reviewed another Brown Ale that was more assertive with the hop bitterness and I liked it a lot, but this is JUST as enjoyable, in different ways.

On the light side of medium bodied, on the lower side of medium carbonation, the mouthfeel is good.

A very nice well made brown Ale. I enjoyed it.

Quite a tall head in the Pilsner-style glass and the brew is a handsome chestnut color. Excellent retention on the whipped-cream foam. Plenty of suds in the mouth with a tangy carbonation. Not much aroma.

Moderate malt body. Roasty, toasty flavors with a dry bitter edge. Flavor is on the grainy side. Some sharp sensations of nearly blackened malt and acidic hops. Some may like the edgier style, but I don't get much hop flavor. Some caramel in the bitterness with a persistent herbal aftertaste.

This is drinkable enough, but for me it's a scratchy and bitter brew with harsher nip. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Special Brews in Lynnwood, Washington.
