A big 'ol liquor store.

Definitely the best government liquor store I've been to, and certainly my favourite. It's huge, well decorated and well organized. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, the selection is very good, the staff are knowledgeable and friendly (for a government liquor store) - it's just overall a pleasant shopping experience.

This is the big government store in Vancouver @ Cambie and 39th.

What can I say - they place is massive but doesn't feel like a warehouse with its modern decor and warm colours.

The beer selection, for a government store, is probably better than any other with a good wall or two dedicated to craft beer products.

What really makes this place great, however, is the fact that it has extended hours (relative to other government stores) and is open on Sundays.

If I'm in the area, I usually stop in to stock up and am usually surprised to find something new and interesting - which is sometimes rare in BC government stores.

I went here on Nov.30/06. If you have never been here this place is a little overwhelming at first. It is HUGE! Well decorated and organized. I immediately went for the beer section. There was a decent selection of BC craft brews as well as Belgians. I'm not that big a fan of the latter but did pick up a bottle of Chimay Blue for only $3.99. Since it's the holiday season now, this store carries all of the gift sets/packs. Unibroue has a mixed 12 pack out his year and there was an abundance of others such as the Tree gift pack, Scottish Ales set, Granville Island Mingler, Hobgoblin, and a few more I can't remember at this time. The staff was very helpful and understanding when I asked if I could make mixed six packs. I'm pretty sure that this store is their "flagship" store so they pretty much have everything in the BCLDB's inventory.

So i was in vancouver on business recently but my secondary reason for being there was to try all the canadian brews i could in 3 days. I was told this Cambie store was the place to go for the bottled stuff. Went there on a sunday and immediately found some Sasquatch Stout and Hop Goblin, both of which i had written down as things to try. But beyond that all they had was regular offerings from local breweries, mostly stuff that i'd noted before my trip as things to avoid. I guess they had a fairly good selection of imports and some Unibroue and stuff, but i can get all of that in the US. Where's the Canadian representation? I was pretty much underwhelmed. Maybe there's some truth to the "Canadian beer sucks" statement made by John Candy in Canadian Bacon. disappointing. oh well.

This actually is not a new store; it has been around for quite awhile. It began rennovation around May of 2005 and as of the beginning of March 2006 was still undergoing finishing touches.

The new layout is much better and has actually increased the space available for product. This does not, however, translate into increased selection. The 39th and Cambie store is commonly referred to as the BCLDB's flagship store, and while the stock the majority of their inventory here, they do miss some beers or receive them later.

In general, all stores suffer from some regionalism. The lower mainland stores generally don't stock Spinnakers beers, and some of the outer stores get some stuff the metro stores don't. (Why is Pemberton the only store in the province that has Sam Smith's IPA?) Also, some of the smaller brewpubs don't get their stuff stocked by the government liquor stores (like Big River, Mission Springs, Swan's/Buckerfields and Canoe) and they miss out on some imports/national beers (like Mississippi Mud Black & Tan and Sleeman's IPA)

At times, the stock at this store is well-shopped and hence depleted. Regardless, the Cambie store is a sure bet for a wide selection and one of the best places in the province to get beers from around the world.

As a side note, the BCLDB has thankfully added a store stock tool to their website.

This store was recently renovated (there was still some construction going on around Christmas).

It's relatively large, with a very good beer selection (lots of local micros). The 'beer-guy' stocking the shelves was very friendly. Being a beer enthusiast, he was knowledgeable and helpful, and even asked me about a couple of new things he hadn't had a chance to try!

I picked up some Old Yale brews, some other locals, and a few Belgians. At the time, they even had a couple cases of the Old Bad Cat!

This seems to be THE store in Vancouver.
