Bier Markt is a really lively, hip, and dimly lit bar in a district that is well known for its beer scene. The bar itself is pretty gorgeous and old school with near-antique tap handles lit up with classic, and not-so-classic brewery logos. The beer selection is huge, primarily featuring Belgian and German brews on draft with a variety of American craft peppered in. There is also a bottle list that is impressively massive.

Bier Markt is connected to Bar Cento, a casual Italian eatery putting out what many Americans would consider upscale food when comparing it to other Italian restaurants. The point here is this is a major bonus to Bier Markt, as their menu is basically Bar Cento's menu. So you can not only get lost in a sea of great beer, but get an added benefit of the awesome wood-fired pizzas or creative pasta dishes from the cute little place next door without the more serious ambiance.

Service may leave a little something to be desired if you're not sitting at the bar, so make sure you get up and be heard whenever it gets busy, as it often does. The bar staff is top notch though--real craft connoisseurs and very attentive to those on the stools.

There is also a staircase that leads down to a craft cocktail bar called Speakeasy.

Great selection of Belgian and Belgian inspired beer, especially the tap selection. Not the ideal place for a non-Belgian fan. Food is well made, especially the house made sausage on the Big Board. Bartenders know their beer and their food, and are enthusiastic to talk about them. They do a good job of making suggestions to people not familiar with the beers they carry.

Went in around 2:00 PM on a Saturday. Really cool atmosphere, that mix of industrial, and modern. You weave through the tables to get to the bar, which is pretty large and spacious. Once at the bar, there were about three or four people behind the bar, and not really busy, but it took a couple minutes to be recognized. Friendly, but somewhat elitist. Looking through the beer selection, which was very nice, but kind of run of the mill. Nothing really knocked my socks off. The food menu was nice as well, but ordering the meat/ cheese/ vegetable board for $19 and getting not that much. Not saying it wasn't good, but 3-4 ounces of meat, 4-5 ounces of cheese, and a beet and a cocktail onion for $19 was a bit much. I did enjoy this place, but I was expecting something a bit more the way I hear people talk about it. I just feel it was a bit pricey for about average stuff.

Bier Markt is home to the first true Belgian-style beer house in the Cleveland area. The beer selection is what you would expect...Chimays, Trappistes Rochefort, Ommegangs, Duvel and so on alongside some typical Belgian fare such as Pommes Frites (which are outstanding and a must try). The atmosphere is generally low-key/laid back however the place gets loud and busy on Friday and Saturday evenings with a very diverse crowd. The beer selection, while vast, isn't changed up to often. They have weekly handle specials but for the most part, they stick with the same line-up. Service is good during moderately busy hours and they do fairly well keeping up on busy nights. In terms of value, food and most beers are reasonable, however, some of their high alcohol and rare beers are a little more pricey, but not outrageous. Overall, Bier Markt has a key to my heart because it was the place that I first experienced the Belgian-styles that I have come to adore. Its a great place for a date especially if its a quiet evening given their nice plush couches and comfy half-circle booths as well as the area surrounding the rear pool table. Be sure to check out Speakeasy, a cocktail lounge beneath the joint (the way you know it's open is by the chandelier that hangs over the stairwell that leads you to it..if its on, its open.) Cheers!!!

Bier Markt is a great value. They have a number of Belgian and domestic beers, many of which are on tap and all of which are very reasonably priced. A few days ago, I had Three Floyds Alpha King, St Bernardus Abt 12 and Bell's Christmas Ale all on tap plus a serving of pommes frites for 28 dollars. Their dipping sauces are pretty good but I've definitely had much better ones but the frites are still really tasty. Worth a visit if you're in the Cleveland Area and right next to Great Lakes Brewing Company and Bier Markt's brother restaurant Market Garden Brewery.

(Visited 07/2011): McNulty's is located in the Ohio City area around the corner from Great Lakes. The brewpub is located on W 25th and Market. Parking is typically scarce in the surrounding area.

The interior is large and somewhat divided, and has a comfortable feel. It boasts a long bar along the right side with table/booth seating throughout the space. There is a large chalkboard behind the bar listing current offerings.

McNulty's beers have a strong Belgian influence, with a lot of the more common beers from that country. All told there are around 15 taps with Duvel (Green), Hoegaarden, Chimay, Lindeman's, St. Bernardus and Ommegang on this list. A sampler is available. The bottled selection numbers around 50 again with an emphasis on the Belgian style. Breweries such as Ommegang, Duvel, Unibroue, Dupont, and Westmalle are present. Outside of Belgium they carry common domestic macro and microbrews.

Service was good on a relatively slow (at least compared to Market Garden) weekday evening. The bartender had a thorough knowledge of of the beer list and was attentive throughout my visit.

I did not have any food on my visit.

Overall this is a nice spot to hit for a solid Belgian beer menu in Cleveland.

Been here a couple times now, and headed back in 10 days. Bier Markt has good atmosphere- it's huge inside, and usually not too loud. There's also outdoor seating if you want to hang outside. Just around the corner from Great Lakes. The service has been good, but not great on my visits. It can, at times, be a challenge to get the bartender's attention- but it's not horrible. The selection is great- lots of Belgian beers, and a great selection of Belgians on draft. Never been disappointed w/ the drafts at all. Food is your typical pub fare, nothing outstanding. Value is pretty good, especially coming from Washington DC. This IS the place to go if you're in Cleveland and you love Belgian beer. Check it out- you won't be sorry!

The Bier Markt on 25th is the only place I'll go outside of the Great Lakes Brewery when I'm in Cleveland. The selection is entirely Blegian, and the best selection of Blegians I've seen. They have Unibroue, Rochefort, and Westmalle. The draft selection is also amazing.

The atmosphere is really good, the only knock is the fact that it gets packed if you go in later in the night, but I guess that's a sign of a good bar.

I was thoroughly impressed when, the bar was packed and I had to wait at least 5 minutes to get a bartender's attention, I ordered Rochefort 10 and La Fin Du Monde. The lady bartender didn't even question me! Also, all carry-out bottles are $1.50 off which makes them still slightly expensive, but not for what you're buying.

Being a huge fan of Belgian beers, the Bier Markt is a place for me.

My wife and I were visitng my brother over the Thanksgiving Holiday when we went to this place on his recommendation. I'm glad we did, because it was quite enjoyable.

The vibe has a bit of a personality disorder. Classy but laid back, it had a very comfortable feel to it. The patrons ran the whole gambit of hipsters to yuppies to run-of-the-mill beer fans.

Our server was a younger girl who seemed slightly cold, but made sure we always had what we needed and never took too long, I just like a bit warmer, helpful feel to the service.

The selection of beers is quite impressive, and the taplist is really nice. Although this place specializes in Belgian beers, there was no shortage of craft beer selection, even non-Belgian-inspired beers. Also, almost all glasses are branded to the beer, which is a big thing for the Belgians, and in my opinion improves the experience with most beers, so I dug that.

I'm not sure if they have food, as we just grabbed a couple drinks before moving on to have dinner at Momocho.

Cleveland has never disapppointed me with food and drink and this place was no different. I wish we had the time to spend more than a couple drinks at this place. Highly recommended!

I have mixed feelings about this place. The first few times I was there it was a nice novelty in Cleveland to see all of the Belgian taps, and the atmosphere was nice. Every time in the past 2 years it has grown stale. The patrons are of the douche-bag variety is very large numbers, most of them drinking the cheap Pabst. The Belgian taplist has not changed and they have paid less attention to the proper glassware, something that made it fun the first few times. It takes FOREVER to get a beer when it is crowded. It would help if they could get a few more rotating guest taps.

The best way to describe the atmosphere of this place is eclectic.
I think they were going for sheik but threw in a pool table and some flat screen t.v.'s. This place is huge inside with a nice bar area, plenty of small tables, and booth for those eating. The lobby was a little creepy with curtains hung from the ceiling, I wasn't sure if this was an orgy room or beer bar. This is where Cleveland's beautiful people(the elite) come to drink, but still comfortable and inviting to a normal guy like me. Everyone including the staff seem to be having a great time.

The selection and quality were awesome. Plenty of taps and a great bottled beer list. Their focus is Belgian beers but they have a great selection of craft beers as well. Most beers are served in branded glasses, which is very cool with me. The beer is fresh and poured properly.

The service is quick and friendly. They have more than enough bar maids and tenders to handle the busy crowd, that was a big plus to me. The servers seem very knowledgeable and serve the beer proper and with pride.

Market Square was once overrun with winos but is now home to some great bars and restaurants. When the new brewery opens this will be the greatest block for beer in America.

Beer heaven. If you don't like Belgian beers, what's the matter with you? Get it together and get yourself down to this excellent beer bar.

They have what they should have - lots of quality Belgian style brews (and a few others), samplers, great presentation, excellent appetizers and stuff.

The decor leaves a little to be desired. The place looks like my parents would expect it to look, having lived in this town for almost 60 years. They know this is in what used to be a horrible neighborhood. Now its just a bad neighborhood. I expected a cleaner look, but it's kind of faux swanky.

McNulyy's Bier Markt is around the corner from Great Lakes Brewery.

Selection is exclent. Feature an IPA and Stout of the week. Most beers on tap are belgian, but also offer Brooklyn, Magic Hat. Plenty of bottles of belgian beers and micros. I had Cain and Abel Ipmerial Rye IPA on tap here.

Food was good, my wife and I shared the marinated olives and a pizza. Excellent!!!

Decor was modern, service was decent. Out bar tender was extremely knowledgable about the beer offered.

Worth a visit when in Ohio City.

I have been here a few times and I decided to stop in on my last visit to Cleveland to give it a review.

The atmosphere was very interesting. There is a dining area as you walk in, but as you continue you enter a very large room with the bar, booths, tables and a pool table in the far back. The place has a very stylistic look to it, a little too trendy for me.

If you love Belgian beers this place offers a very quality selection. Not only do they have great beers, they serve them all in the proper glassware!

Service was good. It was rather busy, so not being able to get a beer for a few minutes is understandable.

Selection is pretty darn good. They have a huge chalkboard behind the bar. When I was there the following beers were on tap: St. Bernardus 12 Abt, DFH 90, OA Yeti, Draak, Delirium Tremens and several others.

Overall, if you are into Belgian beers you have to stop here.

Returned from my first trip there about an hour ago. Learned about it here on BA (thank you all very much indeed!)

Atmosphere: I have read all of the other reviews here on BA of this place's atmosphere so I was prepared for the "modern decor" and such and indeed it is still there but I found it to be very warm and comfortable albeit very very dark. Myself and my party (we totaled 4) could not read our menus it was so dark. Addendum 12 14 08 I returned there 4 or 5 more times since writing those comments. I think that we sat in a low lit seat because I have not had a problem seeing menus since that night. In fact, last night I was commenting to the group that I was with that this place has a great atmosphere. I am upgrading my rating from 4.0 to 4.5.

Quality: Very good for a place that focuses on beer I was suprised by the good quality. I have certainly been to places with better quality but their focus was not the beer. Those were comments on the food. The beer was the highest quality.

Service: Good but not great. There were several people willing to help us but our primary waitress left us waiting several times for what I consider to be long periods. For example, after we indicated that we were ready for the check she did not appear for about 15 minutes. I was not in a hurry but 5 minutes would have been more understandable. It then took an additional 5 minutes for her to return with our paid bills (after credit cards were taken and such). Addendum: I returned for a visit 9 13 08. This time we just wanted to drink and shoot some pool. The service this time was as good as it could be. I started a tab at the bar and they handled everything expertly. I am upgrading my previous "3" in this category to a "4."

Selection: 99 beers counting bottles and taps (with about 20 taps) tranlates to an exceptional selection. I had not heard of 1/2 of the beers that they had on tap and had never seen most of the bottles that they had in stock. I took 12 different bottles home with me (reviews to follow!).

Food: Again, really pretty good but not the best that I have had. I was not expecting the best that I have had and I did not get it. The food was a nice suprise. My focus was the beer. Addendum 12 14 08. I have returned 4 or 5 more times since I wrote those last statements. The food is exceptional with authentic Belgian Fries, some great wood stove pizzas, Ohio Burger with Chimay cheese. I am upgrading my rating from a 4 to 5 for the food. It is exceptional.

Value: 12 bottled beers, 4 draft beers, a 10 beer sample, a large order of fries and 2 small pizzas were $170. The 12 bottles were probably $100 so I think that the value is fair.

Notes: I am so glad that I followed through on this place since first seeing it on my way to Great Lakes Brewery (around the corner) and then reading about it here on BA. Anyone reading this who is in the Cleveland Area should look into it. Their current beer selection and menu is online (just follow the link above!).

This place is around the corner from the Great Lakes Brewing Company. It comes across as being a little trendy but still comfortable. The crowd was younger given the hip vibe of the place. The tap selection is on a chalk board behind the bar and is very impressive at first glance. The number of Belgians that they offer is a beer lovers dream. Sadly, they were out of the ones that I wanted to try. Especially since I stopped by this place specifically to have a St. Bernardus Abt 12 on tap. I had to settle for an Oak Aged Yeti which is still a good consolation prize. That was followed by a glass of Gulden Draak. The glassware selection is a nice touch. They are able to serve many beers in matching glasses. I would recommend stopping by this place for a nightcap after a nice dinner and tour at Great Lakes.

I'm a Great Lakes beer lover to the core, so when I'm in th Ohio City area, I almost always have to stop by GLBC. A few days ago, I decided to try the "Belgian Place" around the corner someone had mentioned. The Bier Markt was a pleasant surprise for me. It has a pretty hip appearance, tv's to watch football, super cool light fixtures (just what everyone is looking for), and a pool table - a nice bonus!

If you're into Belgian Ales, this is certainly the place for you. There were probably about 10+ Belgians on tap plus a few other specials which I assume are changed periodically. I'm always a stickler for proper presentation of beer and this place gets good marks in my book. There is literally a wall of glasses for the various beer varieties. I was pleased to find that my ale wasn't too cold as is often the case at other establishments.

On top of the great beers, they have a small food menu with some unique selections including hand-made, flatbread pizzas and a burger sporting a Belgian Ale sauce.

If you have ever been to Great lakes Brewing company, then you know right about where this place is. You can park at Dave's supermarket and walk a 1/2 block, or do like the patrons and valet, or have the limo drop you off...

My opinion may be squewed since I visited this establishment on New Years Eve, but is not every reviewer's ideas somewhat bias based on the hour, day, and season they visit a location? I digress;

The property is divided into two seperate venues joned by a common seating area in the front of the building. Bar Cento is a nice wine bar, with a full service restuarant and an excellent wine list. Mcnulty's is an upscale beer bar with 22 taps (not all of which have a keg attached) and a rumored 88 bottles.

I arrived early, before the crowd turned both sites into raccous hipster party joints with blaring music/D.J. and plenty of drunk 20-somethings. I made reservations for my party of 12, which made me feel cool when the bouncer saw that my name was "on the list", but the red carpet ran out there. I left numerous messeges during business hours for several days in a row before the 31rst, all of which were missed or ignored even though they claim to be "open everyday of the year". When I finally did reach someone, they confirmed the insinuation of thier website that all cocktails, mixed drinks, beer, and wine were included in the cover charge for the event between 9 and midnight. I was specific in my inquiry because given the prices of most of thier food and drink- 60 bucks seemed like a steal. An all-night buffet and noise maker/hats were also promised.

Well, only 8 of the taps were included in the deal, with 3 house wines, and "well-drinks"... oh and they stopped serving food at 10 pm. We did get champagne at midnight, but no party hats of noisemakers. Many people in my party were upset that both an empolyee of the club and the website had mislead its patrons into paying a lot of money for bottom-shelf booze, macro beer, and cold rigatoni. I had kept the assumtion that there would be SOME limit on what was available, but I felt a bit cheated- either because an ignorant member of the staff had given me false information; or because a fancy place like this would dilberatly lie to guests as to what would be provided.

Aside from the pre 2008 chaos and getting gyped; I ordered a St. Bernardus ABT 12 which was served in a non-chilled Koningshoeven goblet, I was asked if I wanted my Hoegaarden with a garnish, and no beer was above or below acceptable serving temp; all this amid the mass hysteria of NYE and a crowded bar. The food was good when it was hot, and the establishment itself is both trendy and beautiful. Plenty of seating with room for dancing, with a pool table and video games in the back near the bathrooms which were very clean especailly given the circumsatnces.

Besides questionable promotions, the only real turnoff are the yuppie assholes that frequnet both Bar Cento and the Bier Markt. I know a few people who come here that wouldn't bother me or a anyone else. But the abundance of snobby, elitist pricks present even in the pre-dusk hours suggests it is likey that someone here will try to make even generous, polite BA's feel like cheap, ignorant outsiders. Still, expensive high-brow places like this are the best locations to find good beer served properly by knowledgable people in an elegant, if hostile environment.

If you're into fine Belgians, look no further than the Bier Markt when in Cleveland!

The dozen or so Belgian handles include Chimay, Piraat, Karmeliet, Kwak, Gulden Draak, la Chouffe, Corsendonk, St Bernardus Abt 12. Not enough? Try another dozen or so others in bottles including the other Trappists (sans Westvleteren, of course).

It doesn't stop there, though. Many are served in their own glassware! Those without are are served in the appropriate style with goblets, tulips and flutes lining the shelves.

Topping it off are the barkeeps. I have not seen a proper pour in Cleveland until now. A cold rinse, the overflowing head and the properly applied head-cutter make you feel like you're in Brussels.

Unquestionably, the ownership has made a concerted and effective effort to offer the finest in Belgian biers served in the appropriate style.

Sure the trendies make this place your typical Fri/Sat "in" bar but who cares! I can stop by after work or on a weekend afternoon and enjoy a marvelous draft with a very comfortable vibe.

Right around the corner from Great Lakes, this is a beer lovers destination without question. As you enter, there’s an initial foyer of sorts with two booths in the middle flanked around the walls with a ring of booths. Talking to the bar tender, this area used to be all outside at one time. It used to be a department store and the booths used to be displays encased in glass. The door to the bar used to be the exterior door. Moving on, you’ll find the bar inside running down the right wall. There’s a strange barrier of lights over the bar of bare, slender bulbs hung over the bar that create a strange effect that really alters the atmosphere once you grab a seat. Further back are some Cambodian orange curtains that break the place up a bit with the latrines in the rear. Again, the bartender mentioned that next door through the windows is going to be the adjoining restaurant which will open in September with some very interesting VIPs rumored to make the opening.

The beers were really plentiful and varied. Belgium and Germany were well represented on their 25 or so taps listed on a chalkboard behind the bar. I went with a Weinstephanner Hefe which was rather fresh and tasty. What made it all the better was that the bartender asked me if I wanted any fruit in my beer. Ohne zitrone, bitte. Locals were there too in force with a bottle list to match. Yowza! Glass ware was also bountiful on wooden shelves behind the counter. Beer is clearly a priority in this joint.

The bartender was really friendly and informative and filled me in on the place’s immediate future, the original entry way and how much more cool one appears whilst driving a rented sports car. I dig those who are calm, unobtrusive and informative. I couldn’t ask for anything more.

To seal the deal the Twins were on the TV. They were playing some team or another, the Indians I think, and the Twins were winning. It was the icing on the cake. If you’re serious about beer and in the area, this place is a must.

Trendy decor where the Delerium pink elephants play a prominent role. They have a good selection of Belgian and microbrews on tap. I would suggest getting a "sample tray" where one can sample either 5 or 10 of the draft selections--specials taps included--for a fair price. They have a pretty solid bottle selection as well.

The service was prompt and friendly. The beer was served a bit too cold, but it's difficult to break many Americans of expecting their beer to be chilly. Definitely a worthwhile establishment to frequent when in Cleveland.

I've had a chance to do a fair amount of travel across the US. It's clear to me that Belgian is becoming more and more accesible in the bigger cities which tells me the demand and appreciation for the finest beer made in the world is on the rise; a good trend. It turns out that in all places, Celveland, Belgian is there for the asking in a hip beer bar on the outskirts of the city. That hip bar is Bier markt. Literally around the corner from the much appreciated Great Lakes Brewing Company, Bier Markt is a Belgian beer lovers wet dream. The bottle selection of Belgian and otherwise is extensive. Drafts selection was a mix of Belgian, domestic micros and German brews. The bar itself is a little more cosmo than I like, but interesting nonetheless. The long slightly curved bar easily seats 30. The lighting consists of tube-shaped bare bulbs suspended by a wire suspended just above the bar - sort of the 2.0 version of Thomas Edison's first light bulb. Very high ceilings with long red, floor to ceiling drapes give it a goth look. The website is replete with youngsters which might make some of us older farts somewhat uncomforable, but given that I got there around 5 pm each time it was pretty much me and the old farts anyway.

Had to go for the Gulden Draak quad which was on tap, along with St. Bernardus Abt 12, and Kwak. They also had Avery Reverand on tap which the affable bartender let me taste. Also, Framboise Lambic. Service was great. The young Ohio State alum and his partner the day before were friendly, amazingly knowledgeable about the Belgians et al they served and just good guys. The former insisted I try the Rochefort Trappist 10 in a bottle which he served in proper glassware (albeit a Westmalle Trappist glass, but why nit-pick?)...a gorgeous goblet with a tall stem.

An all around pleasant experience and a suprising pub in a City that is developing a taste for the finer beers in life.

Clevelanders, get thee to Bier Markt! I will next time I'm in town.

Was in town to referee a rugby match and met up with a college buddy to hit the town. Went to Bier Markt after visiting the downtown Winking Lizard.

The place is very interesting, bar on one side, bench seating on the other with small tables in the middle. Booth seating is available in the billiard room. Very dark, retro tube lighting over the bar and some red filtered lighting is all there seemed to be. The tap list is on a big chalk board behind the bar. A very well done tap and bottle menu is available in print form as well. The crowd was solidly under 30 when I was there and so was the bar staff. The people, the place, and the music made for a good atmosphere.

The beer selection was very good. They rotate the taps as evidenced by the lines drawn through some of the offerings on the printed menu. There was very little on tap that I HAD had before. My buddy and I were much bemused by the group of 10 or so sitting next to us (Michelob Ultra for the girls, mix drinks for the guys...WTF, mate?) not taking advantage of the selection.

We ordered at the bar initially, but the bar staff seem to take turns floating and came buy on regular enough basis to prevent us having to go back all but one time. The one time I did quiz a member of the staff she seemed very knowledgeable.

The prices seemed ok. Maybe a bit higher than I am used to, but I am in cleveland 1-3 times a year. And to be honest, price was not a huge issue as I did not know when I woud have a chance to come back and was making the most of it.

Additional props on their serving many of their tap beers in branded glassware. I received Piraat in a Piraat glass, Rare Vos in a Rare Vos glass and saw Stella in a Stella glass.

Stopped into the Bier Markt a couple months ago after I moved to Cleveland for work. It's great having a local pub with this kind of beer selection and service. Not to sound like a lush, but I'm in there all the time, and have really enjoyed the place. Besides the great beers, I think they have almost 100 Belgian beers, I have met some quite friendly people while there.

The other night I was treated to a quick tour of the restaurant they are building in the former art gallery next door and the lounge in the basement.

If you haven't seen this place, you'll be pleasantly surprised how wonderful it is. Plus, there is so much to do in the immediate neighborhood....Great Lakes Brewing, Flying Fig, Garage Bar, Old Angle, and a heap more.

We stumbled upon this place accidently while searching for Great Lakes Brewery and had to take a look. The atmosphere seems to cater to the young, hip crowd, who filled this bar on the Saturday night we visited. There was plenty of space, including a dim lounge room that seperates the bar area from the front door. Far from being snobby, the bartender was very friendly, despite the fact we were inquiring about directions to another bar. We stayed for some Belgian brews; the draft list boasted of Piraat, Gulden Draak, Tripel Karmeliet, and many other great imports. They boast of 80 bottles, but the draft list by itself is enough for a couple nights of drinking.
They don't offer food, but allow for you to order from the nearby takeout places and provide their menus. I would suggest doing as we did- have a beer or two here and head around the corner to Great Lakes for some grub. Don't let the trendy atmosphere fool you; this place is a nice place to hang out.
