A - Looks more interesting than a lager, nice amber colour with some light lacing on top.

S - Slight ginger smell and some sweet notes.

T - Strong spicy ginger flavour upfront and finishes with some typical ale-like hop flavour. The ginger is a bit too strong of a kick perhaps and maybe wouldn't be so bad to taste more of the ale.

M - A kick to the throat from the ginger and pretty strong carbonation too.

O - An interesting one, not the best executed but at least its a bit different. I like it but I feel its a bit too harsh for me to enjoy anything more than one glass of it.

Drank in September in the Cotswolds, UK out of a milk glass in an Air BnB. Bottle said Blandford Fly and called it a Golden Ale.

Look - dark chestnut in color, little to no head.

Smell - distinctly malty and subdued spice.

Taste - more malty than spicy, nothing Christmas to the spice, but I’m writing this after the fact. All I remember is that there is was distinctly tasty.

Feel. Thick and heavy.

Overall. It’s understandable how this beer is dissed by the BA crowd given that it’s a supermarket (or pub?) purchase and likely has been for years. For me, this this a gem. There is nothing Golden Ale or even English Pale Ale about it. I don’t know what I’d call it other than a malt beer beverage taste sensation. Just hit the spot. Can’t wait to have another, either on this trip or my next visit to the UK.

Sept. 2009: 500 ml bottle, as Badger Blandford Fly, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 5.2%. Contains sulphites. Deep golden colour, big head rapidly diminishing. Aroma of ginger, syrup and and some fruit, hints of toffee. The flavour is very sweet, syrupy and sugary, with a moderate but nice ginger burn in the finish. Hardly any hops. Not really my kind of beer, but drinkable.

Appearance - Pours an amber with three fingers of off-white head.

Smell - spicy, earthy, and floral hops, spruce, oak, hint of ground ginger, bready malts, and spicy yeast.

Taste - spicy, earthy, and floral hops upfront. The spruce, oak, ground ginger follow suit. The bready malts and spicy yeast finish the brew off.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes dry and a tad spicy from the ground ginger.

Overall - A interesting brew that displays elements of a English Pale Ale and a ginger beer. This one is quite unique and could easily be a sessionable brew.

Badger have come on leaps and bounds since the 1970s and the pre CAMERA era of keg beer where Badger was one of the worst. Their Fursty Ferret and Hopping Hare Amber Ale & Pale Ale are First Class. This beer however is simply odd in claiming to be a Pale Ale. Good looking with a nice head but the smell and taste is of ginger cake - not for me. Its a Golden Ale which is not usually to my tase anyway usually always too fruity. That said here in the UK Golden Ales are drawing in young folk who previously drank insipid Lager 0 so they have their use.

L- Pale chestnut, clear, 1cm white head, appears to hold well.
S- Interesting, a kind of woody bouquet, like a cluster of antique furniture, rich, sprucey, oaks
T- Hmm, descend into something almost creamy feeling. a distinct rich flight-path here. But it ends up a bit sweet on the tongue. And there seems to be a really pronounced spice at the end, like white pepper, zinging on the roof of the mouth, [which is a first].
M- It's all a bit too much, I'm losing what they're trying to do here. That tells you it's over-complex and the plot is lost.
O- I don't get this. It's notably sweet, really sweet, but has a real pepper zing that sticks in the throat for a looong time, and so on. No, I don't rate it...
Describes itself on the bottle as a 'Gingery 5.2%'

A lovely pint! I’m not a All day boozer. I like a good pint to round the day off! I don’t normally do these review things! But I have to say Flyer is a lovely pint with a great tast of ginger. Very well priced and maybe one of the best beers on the supermarket shelf! (Well the ones that stock it!) Great with a good cheese and onion cob!
