750ml bottle poured into a pils glass
A: Light yellow, a hint tan, with a 1/2-finger head that settles very quickly, though plenty of nice carbonation
S: Plenty of wheat, coriander, and a hint of citrus. Retains a bit of something I'd describe as unfermented wort
T: Light, with wheat up front, coriander, grass and just a hint if citrus juice
M: Light-bodied with pleasant carbonation
O: Worth a try, no flaws just could use a bit more complexity

A: Pale clean but opaque golden with a large foamy white head.

S: Orange peel, grapefruit, citrus peel, and tripelesque spices (cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg) in the nose.

T: Lemon, orange, some tropical fruit even. Citrus peel and tripelesque spices.

M: Medium bodied and highly carbonated. Very easy to drink.

O: Definitely recommended. A very typical, but easy drinking and tasty white ale/witbier/whatever.

Appearance - Pours a hazy straw yellow with a mountainous, pillowy 3 finger head. Great retention, leaving a thick layer of suds across the surface. Lacing along the glass is thick, and clings to the sides with great ease.

Smell - Tart citrus, like lemon with touches of tangerine, along with clove and some milkiness that I pick up with a lot of witbiers. Wheat. Touches of floral character.

Taste - Lots of citrus bite. Lemon and tangerine. Clove finds its niche by mid-taste, along with some mild funk. Mild banana. Wheat hits near the finish before a balanced finish of flavors.

Mouthfeel - Medium in body with lively carbonation. Goes down smooth and easy, with a crisp finish.

Overall - I like the mouthfeel with this one. A lot of witbiers suffer from what I think is a watery edge. This has a solid feel. I don't know that it's worth the price, but this is a quality wit.

750ml brown glass bottle with hood-and-wire (aka cage) cap over a cork acquired at a local SoCal bottle shop and served into a flared stem-snifter in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are fairly high; this brewery has turned out some surprisingly good brews. Label art is simple. Batch No. 121. "Unfiltered. Bottle conditioned. Ale brewed with spices and chamomile."

Reviewed cold - straight from the fridge. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: Pours a two finger wide head of beige colour. Decent thickness. Little creaminess. Not much froth. No lacing as the head recedes. Retention is above average - about 3 minutes.

Body colour is a cloudy yellow of average vibrance. Nontransparent. Translucent. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show.

Standard fare for the style. No overt flaws are obvious, but it's not unique or special.

Sm: Lemon peel, floral hop character, chamomile (when I look for it after prompting from the label; I doubt I'd notice it otherwise), coriander/cilantro, pilsner malts, wheat, and citrus zest. Maybe some clove from the yeast. No alcohol is detectable. I don't detect any off notes. A pleasant appealing aroma of above average to mild strength. Pretty typical of the style.

T: Light tartness. The lemon peel is wonderfully complemented by the spicy coriander/cilantro and clove. The subtle spiciness is really lovely here; I'd almost say it seems like some rye malt might have been used. Citrusy zest. Floral hop character suits the flavour profile nicely. The body is built from wheat malt primarily with some clean pilsner malts and crystal malts filling it out. Some apple. A bit of clove. Overall, it's a nicely balanced witbier, but the chamomile doesn't come through as much as I'd hoped. A bit grainy. Some limited subtlety is at play here. Could be more complex. No alcohol comes through. Flavour duration is average. Flavour intensity and depth are above average.

Mf: Biting and overcarbonated, but also zesty and wet. Not quite refreshing. Surprisingly coarse for the style. Its presence on the palate is too assertive; it should be lighter and more approachable. Not oily or harsh. Suits the flavour profile generally well, but it doesn't come off custom-tailored to it - nor is the bottle conditioning evident (how is the carbonation this rampant if it was bottle conditioned?). Full bodied. Too thick.

Dr: Drinkable but ultimately not worth its pricetag. A nice little witbier from Telegraph, but I see no reason to pick it up again with better witbiers out there at a better or comparable price. I appreciate the attempt, but it didn't come out fantastic. Still, it's a nice if overly aggressive brew in the style, and I'm glad I got to try it. I could drink another, but I wouldn't go out of my way to.

C+
