pours golden with a thick two finger head.
apple and cirus tartness on the nose, with some light wheat
definite citrus sour with a soothing wheat finish. tartness lasts through the wheat long after the sip.
champagne tight carbonation, and light and crisp body
quite a refreshing beer that would taste great while eating fresh fruit on a porch on a warm late-spring afternoon.

What a really splendid beer. A very nice easy-drinker for a sour ale.

A nice combination of tartness and funkiness. Along with some sourness as well. Citrus tastes and the bottle says lemon of some sort was added. I believe that impacts head retention.

I prefer this beer when it was colder. It lost some of its great funkiness as it warmed.

All in all, I would especially like to have this in warmer weather with brunch. I'm thinking, and its just a hunch, that it would go well with goat cheese.

January 2009. Exceedingly pale sunflower yellow with multiple uprushing bubble streams and a massive crown of eggshell colored cream. Large divots appear in the increasingly rocky foam, while a smattering of lace sticks to the glass.

The nose is wonderful and reflects the ingredients: lemon verbena (a flowering plant), Lactobacillus (a bacteria) and Brettanomyces (a yeast). The result is a tangy, lemony, barnyard-like scent that is reminscent of a summer saison. It's pure pleasure to sniff. Especially if you're a fan of the style.

Reserve Wheat Ale is good beer that doesn't quite make it all the way to great beer. It's restrained for an American wild ale, with the funk-o-meter stopping well short of the red line. Those who are ambivalent about 'bug beer' will probably still be ambivalent after tasting it.

The biggest negative is a lack of malty guts. This has to be the lightest wild ale that I've ever had, which was predictable given the ABV. On the other hand, it's refreshing and quenching and perfect for a picnic lunch. Untoasted wheat, slightly bitter grasses and lemon peel is the sum total of the flavor profile. Along with the surprisingly clean, mild funkiness of the organisms, of course.

The mouthfeel is appropriately light and is properly carbonated. All in all, it fits the rest of the beer's attributes pretty well. This is the weakest of the scores, for whatever that's worth.

Telegraph Reserve Wheat Ale probably hit the brewery's target in the middle of the bull's eye. It's good warm weather beer and is the wild ale equivalent of a simple saison or a crisp pilsner. Oh, and this particular vintage is showing no signs of age whatsoever.

Sppearance - pours a lemony yellow with a beautiful 2 finger head and leaves a nice lacing around the glass. I take a step back and it reminds me of egg yoke and whites. Looks tart.

Smell - citrus with distinct lemon scent permeating from the glass. Very refreshing.

Mouthfeel - Crisp, acidic, and light.

Taste - Just like it looks and smells. A whole lot of lemon citrus and tart. Very much like a Berliner Weissbier. Very refreshing and thirst quenching. The lemon peel bitterness comes through in the end with a little yeast. Not a strong aftertaste.

Overall - An outstanding summer beer to beat the heat. Citrus refreshment and not much else more. More Tart than sour and not as complex but enjoyable non the less.

750ml corked and caged bottle poured into a McKenzie "shorty" wine glass. Bottled in February 2010, so just about a year old.

Pours a deep hazy golden with two fingers of fluffy and almost shiny white head that quickly fades to a thin layer but that layer lasts for the duration.

Aroma is funky with some wine and oak. As it warms and opens up a bit the wheat becomes more evident with some bready notes. I was expecting more lemon, it's there but pretty light.

Taste starts off with some citrusy sweetness before moving on to a lemon tartness and a dry, grainy finish.

Mouthfeel is thin, which is to be expected and a little grainy. It's highly drinkable and at 5% it won't be a problem to finish this bottle. It's an interesting take on a wild, it's the first ever wheat sour I've had and I'm glad I've got another bottle.

I've had their Gypsy Ale and enjoyed it so I figured I'd give this beer a try and I was impressed. Cloudy yellow beer with a dense, 2 finger head. The aroma is really great. Slight funk, Lemon tartness, sour, and some light wheat beer notes. The flavor is really very good too. Tart, lactic, lemony, with a dry, raw wheat finish. Tons of wheat in the aftertaste as well almost to a fault. It's a little harsh in the finish. The mouthfeel was excellent. Slightly creamy, tight carbonation. The drinkability should be a 5 but the corn husk, raw wheat aftertaste dings it and the taste a little bit.

Overall a very enjoyable beer. I'd definitely drink it again. If I had regular access to it I'd probably drink quite a bit of it.

Poured a bright hazy orange, lots of sediment with a big white head, some nice lacing and long lasting.

The smell is light and slightly lemony and sour with a hint of wheat.

The taste is very nice, has a nice wheat malt backbone with zippy lemon and citrus flavors, has a nice medium sourness. Very light and refreshing.

The mouthfeel has very nice carbonation and a light slightly dry finish.

This is a great wheat beer, the sourness is a very nice complement.

Bottle from Jan '09.

Pours a very bright straw color with a huge head that sticks around for a while. It's got an awesome lactic aroma. Very crisp smelling. If you told me this were a Berliner I'd believe it. The flavor only solidifies the previous statement. Super clean lactic flavor with a kiss of brett. I love the wheat in this beer. Awesome. Incredibly drinkable. Well done.

App- "It looks yellow dad" This is what my 4 1/2 year old says to me and she is correct. Light yellow with a nice two finger head.

Smell- Funky with a lemony note. A somewhat white wine note with a little acidity.

Taste- Slightly delicate with a hint of funk and citrus. Not overbearing at all. You still get the wheat profile to the beer which is nice and that they didnt try to overrun the flavors while trying to "sour" the beer.

Mouth- Thin bodied as expected and a nice high carbonation level with a nice crispness and acidity.

Drink- A good way to end the day with a flavorful and low abv beer. I could put back a few bottles of this pretty quickly.

A - Pours a light hazy gold/yellow with about 1/2 inch head to it.

S - Citrus lemon flavor with hints of sweetness along with wheat.

T - Flavor follows the aroma and has a a very tart flavor profile. Has hints of wheat throughout. The sourness mostly has a lemon quality to it.

M - Mouthfeel is nice. Has adequate carbonation and is crisp and dry in the finish. Very smooth on the end as well.

D - Its a great beer for the warmer season and definitely a beer I could put down several glasses of. Really enjoyed it, and would be great to sit and enjoy.

Pours a hazy, bright straw color with a large white head that takes some time to go down. Scent is nice lemon zest with some tart aromas. A bit of wheat in the nose as well...as well as cider-like scents. Taste is initially pleasantly tart with flavors of lemon and spices. Lots of lemon with just a bit of bread and wheat. Mouthfeel is light bodied and highly carbonated. Drinkability is very high. Overall, this was an awesome beer that I was not expecting to be as great as it was. To me, this is more like a berliner weissbier than a wild ale. Highly drinkable.

A: The pour is a hazy yellow/light gold color with a nice white foam.

S: A tart lemon scent to go along with the slightly sweet wheat aroma. Not terribly "complex".

T: Mostly tart (lots of lemon), there is a bit of sweetness from the wheat in there at some points. Although the primary taste sensation is tartness, it's not as sour as I would like.

M: Light bodied, highly carbonated, and crisp.

D: Very drinkable, although not the most interesting or complex sour ale, it's still nice to drink.

750ml bottle (bottled 2/15/10) poured into Jolly Pumpkin snifter/tulip.

Loud pop of the cork, and the beer pours a thin, pale, straw yellow color with a little bit of fizzy white head on top. The foam quickly dissipates into not much more than a little wisp around the side of the glass.

The smell has a nice funky sourness to it. I get a very nice basement smelling mildew note that is balanced by a tinge of sour/sweet lemon peel. A little bit of a bready wheat note that really brings the whole thing home. A great delicate aroma that still has plenty of complexity.

The taste is slightly sour on the front, followed quickly by a strong presence of wheat. There is a slight note of citrus sourness, but nothing really shining through there. Mostly just a very light wheat beer with a solid sour backbone distinguishing it from a regular wheat offering. Definitely a mild American wild. Has some of the same delicacies and complexities of a Berliner Weisse.

The mouthfeel is quite foamy, which somewhat distracts from the complexity. The finish is oily almost in a citrus pith way...like I just chewed on an orange or lemon peel.

Overall, I enjoy the beer. It would be a very nice wild ale to quaff in the summertime. Not overly complex, but still interesting enough to warrant another go. I like the take on the American wild style that stays away from the puckeringly sour route that some like to take.

750ml bottle at 58 degrees.

Pours clear, light gold with a two-plus inch head of hissing white froth. After a quick drop, the porous foam dissapated to a partial skim coat on the surface along with a few streaks of lacing.

Aromatics lead off with tart lemon with hints of cut grass, wet hay, pineapple skin, and light malt. Quite earthy and slightly musty with plenty of zesty lemon.

Light bodied with a crisp, quenching mouthfeel.

Tart lemon, grapefruit, and a wheat twang start the palate. Hints of spice and mild funk follow through.

Finishes with a lingering tartness, lemon oil, and earth-rubbed citrus.

Tasty enough and certainly dry and quenching. The tartness stays fairly level throughout and never builds to what I would consider "sour". More funk and sourness would be welcome on this end.

This is, by far, my favorite Telegraph beer out of the ones I've tried. The style is basically consensus between all of us drinking it at Beachwood BBQ - Gabe in particular thinks it's a Berliner Weissbier, and I'm inclined to agree.

On tap at Beachwood. From notes:

Appearance: Very thin head, very spotty lacing that is fairly weak in staying power. The body is a hazy pear/peach color, appropriate for a wheat beer.

Smell: "Pear city," as my notes say. Lots of pear in the aroma, followed by cork wood, apricot, and belgian yeast. A hint of peach in there, too. Really a fairly fantastic smelling beer, if for no other reason the pears.

Taste: Apricot on the front end, followed by pears, straw, and sourness on the back end. Surprisingly drinkable, and surprisingly addicting. A bit cider-like.

Mouthfeel: Good carbonation, and juicy. Very slightly dry.

Drinkability: Intensely drinkable. A great beer.

Bottle from San Roque Liquor in Santa Barbara.

Cloudy pale golden pour with a fizzy white head that dissipates.

Lemon sourness in the aroma.

Soft, wheat character presents a distinctly citrusy sourness. Some lactic sourness. Pretty clean. Grassy (probably from the wheat). Minimal funkiness (with Brett added, this may develop later). Somewhat floral. Nice.

Low to medium carbonation with a nice, dry finish. Refreshing.

Drinkability is very good. Perfect for a hot day.

Recommended. Not as sour or as complex as some, but still very nice.

A couple comparisons:

If you want something more complex and floral, try the 1809. If you want something with way more lactic sourness, try the Bruery Hottenroth.

A-Pours hazy straw yellow with well over 2 inches of fluffy eggshell white head. Reduces very slowly, leaving minimal soapy lacing.

S-Orval-esque brett funkiness,pale malt, zested lemon, white pepper.

T/M-Very bright lemony flavor that masks most of the earthiness of the wheat till the backpalate. Is this a Berliner Weisse? Has the slick yeastiness of a Berliner, but with the Brett funk of a wild ale. Easy drinking and light, with prickly carbonation.

O-A solid beer. Worth revisiting.

Poured into a stemmed tulip: Three fingers of soft, porous head that falls to a thick coating without leaving lacing, over pale gold body, hazy but transparent.

Aroma is tart lemon, with a little sweetness like Italian ice, plus a peppery, phenolic spice character. Lemon character gets richer & more pronounced, nice. Get a little musty & papery quality, not bad.

Biting lemon acidity up front, turns a little grassy or earthy, kind of like bitter greens, with a complex herbal character. Maybe a little woody, with a very dry, tart finish.

Sharply acidic at first, rounds & smooths out a little bit midway but remains pretty biting. Mellows after a bit.

This is a formidable beer but with some complexity,

A: Huge 4 finger head fades at a decent rate over hazy murky banana wheat colored beer.

N: Nose of banana, wheat, light malts, a little lemon zest and orange peel, Belgian wit like aromas, light spices, light sweet malts, a touch of booze, and a hint of vanilla.

T: Lighter taste, with some wheat, light malts, citrus, lemon zest and orange peel again, little sour tangy fruit flavor, some banana, more Belgian wit like flavors too, a little bitterness, some spices. Slightly fruity and juicy but still dry.

M: Mouth is lighter with good carbonation.

F: Finishes spicy with a slight acidic and lingering sour tangy fruit, more lemonade like flavor, very dry, little funky dry yeasty taste too, but very little coming from that heavy dryness. Some fruit flavors so light its hard to detect.
