This arrived as a dark amber with tiny head, and left a thin ring or two of lace.

The smell has the wanted flavors but comes out a bit simplistic. Rye seems thrown in as an afterthought. The taste matches, but adds a hint of alcohol. The mouthfeel is light.

Not bad but this is a style where I want big and bold, and it feels a little lacking.

Type: 750ml (25.3 oz.) bottle
Glass: Fuller’s London pint glass
From: Armada Wine & Beer Merchant in Santa Barbara, Calif.
Price: $12.99
Purchased: July 4, 2014
Consumed: July 6, 2014
Misc.: Batch No. 145

Poured a caramel, honey, amber color with two fingers of khaki white frothy head. Similar to look to the Goose Island Pere Jacques that I just had. Average spots of spider web lacing along the sides of the glass. Average retention on the top all the way down.

Smelled caramel, toffee, plum, slight maple syrup, butterscotch, floral notes, rye and sweetened iced tea.

Tasted caramel and toffee up front. The booziness is there, no hiding the 10.0% ABV. Some maple syrup, rye, sugary flat iced tea, floral sugary notes and light butterscotch.

Medium body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Long, boozy finish.

A pretty good barleywine. Not in my Mt. Rushmore of barleywines, but it was pretty tasty.

Batch #79

I tried this one at the brewery a couple of years ago and was pretty underwhelmed... I decided to pick up a bottle and sit it down to see what happened. It gets better... but it's still not great.

A - Pours a hazy orange with two fingers of thick eggshell white head. Tons of bubbles on this one.... really champagne-like.

S - Lots of crisp fruit and sweet rye. Apples, a bit of floral honeysuckle sap, and some dried apricots. Not a lot of that sweet sticky english-style barleywine smell here. Zero port-like nose.

T - A little sweeter than the nose would lead you to expect. Some fig, molasses, and sweet alcohol flavors are present here that weren't on the nose. Still a bit of that crisp apple that keeps throwing me off. It really shouldn't be in a beer of this style.

M - Very overcarbonated. This should be a thick, chewy beer that you can sip and savor. The high carbonation makes this difficult to keep in your mouth and savor. It's truly sharp and distracting. Finishes with medium dryness.

O - Although better than on tap, this beer isn't going to become a gem with age. Not worth the cost, and not a great representation of the style. My wife enjoyed it, and she detests barleywines.

Acquired for $11.00 at a local SoCal bottle shop. 10% ABV confirmed. 750ml brown glass bottle with hood and wire cap over a cork served into a New Belgium stem-goblet in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are above average; I quite fancy the style. I don't recall Telegraph ever impressing me, but there's a first time for everything.

Served after a brief period of rest following its removal from the refrigerator. Allowed to warm further over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: Pours a four finger beige-khaki colour head of nice cream and thickness and damn good retention for the high ABV (~5+ minutes). Decent lacing as the head recedes. Body colour is a semitransparent pale copper. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. Translucent. Solid for the style. Surpasses my expectations; the retention is very impressive.

Sm: Heavy rye. Floral hops. Rye spiciness. Biscuit malt. No yeast character or alcohol is detectable. Where're the malts? A strange aroma for a barleywine. Some caramel and sweetness. It's a bland aroma all around. I'm starting to get suspicious. Moderately strong.

T: Rye malt and floral hops, with some bitterness and spiciness on the climax. No yeast character. A bit of alcohol does come through. It lacks the malty build of a good barleywine and brings little to the table. It's so simple and boring; there's just not much to say about it. A strange artificial vanilla sweetness hits on the finish. If you expect complexity from a barleywine, this is not the one for you. Strangly built and off-putting. Meh.

Mf: Coarse and wet. Thick but unnecessarily so; there aren't many flavours to support. A bit overcarbonated. Poor palate presence. Doesn't suit the flavours particularly well.

Dr: I regret paying $11 for this. I definitely wouldn't get it again. A poor barleywine from Telegraph; more boring and bland for this style than I thought was possible. Drinkable but underwhelming. Not recommended. Very pedestrian.

I had this on tap at Holy Hound, served chilled in a snifter.

The color is deep amber w/ gentle haze and a thin white cap with tiny bead. The smell is fruity and floral with slight prune note. The feel is semi-dry with very mild sweetness and hint of medicinal tinge almost wild with herbal /spiced quality.

The flavor is slightly dry and there is a light band-aid influence with slight malt up front and mild floral hop aspect with light currant and berry-like element with woody hops in the finish. Overall, an ok beer, but not as good as I hoped based on my previous experience with this brewer -passable, but I would probably not order this again.

Appearance: Nice dark amber color, good head.

Smell: Rye, slightly floral, spicy, and more rye.

Taste: Very good. Complex, with rye, floral, citrus and more fighting for your attention. Great balance for something with such strong flavors.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with a smooth finish.

Overall: Very good. Complex drink with a high ABV. Who could ask for more?
