Double Dragon has an ABV of 4.2%. It is a full drinking, premium Welsh Ale, which is malty and subtly hopped. Double Dragon has a rich colour and smooth balanced character. This deep copper red ale has a tangy red fruit flavour with nutty, toffee overtones.

A 275ml bottle with a BB of Sept 2012. Picked up from Morrisons a while back as part of a seasonal 4-pack. Described on the label as a medal-winning premium ale and the national drink of Wales. I like the celtic-themed dragon image on the front.

Poured into a Sam Smith's pint glass. A coppery-amber colour with faint haze and good carbonation. Forms a small head of white foam that lasts for a moment or two before subsiding. Aroma of mild caramel malt with hints of grain, biscuits and faint stewed leaves. A stale, almost oxidised cardboard note lurks in the background - not good.

Tastes of caramel malt with a dry finish. Notes of subtle biscuity grain and stewed leaves, accompanied by a stale cardboard hint that dominates the flavour. A mild, dry bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, but insubstantial and overly astringent. Aftertaste of dry, stale malt and stewed leaves.

Pretty crappy beer. The taste is unpleasant, and would be dull even without the obvious flaws. Boring malt with little hop presence, while the staleness is vile. All said, this is rubbish - not worthy to be anyone's national drink. There must be better beer in Wales?! Other reviews seem to suggest that the cask version is a big improvement, so I might revisit it if I have the chance. Based on this experience, however, I would recommend avoiding it completely.

Sep. 2004: Cask at the Ipswich Beer Festival 2004, gravity dispense. This is now the only cask ale from Felinfoel. Chestnut colour. Malty aroma, hints of sulphur. Flavour is malty sweet, sulphurous and dusty. Very low on hops. Dusty aftertaste.

July 2007: 500 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. ABV is 4.2%. Clear copper coloured beer, decent off-white head. Fruity aroma (red berries), also hints of caramel. The flavour is fruity and malty with very moderate hops / low bitterness. Slightly "dusty" finish. Not bad.

Re rating - Reddish brown colour, quickly dissipating head. Smell of some toast. Quite balanced slight malty and hoppy taste with toffee. Feel is light for the style and quite refreshing. It's a good traditional Welsh ale. Not the strongest but it's a nice beer.

Like most beers, it is much better on draught. It's a damned fine beer that tastes especially good when taken with a rugby match...

Clear copper/amber. Thin head.
English hops and malt apparent in the aroma.
There is little to excite the palate. Slight fruit, nut and toffee.
Too light and too carbonated for the style.

Served cool from 500ml brown bottle into straight pint glass.

L) Clear, red-tinged medium to light brown. Thin film. A few bubbles rising.

S) An apple-toffee odour, quite light.

T) Odd fruity-malt flavour, light bitterness. Unusual, not unpleasant.

F) Easy drinking, light bitterness and no aftertastes.

O) Not keen on this one.

Darn fine bitter!

Appearance: Dark full amber, thick white head, not much lacing. Almost no appreciable carbonation, as should be.

Smell: Biscuit, toasty, delicate flowery hops, modest ripe fruit sub-tones, hint of a slight metallic note I get from some bitters.

Taste: Toasty and nutty, sweet bready malts, delicate tinny bite of hops, nice dry citrus/pineapple spice in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Light but notably creamy. Clean, and the creaminess lends substantiality despite the lighter body profile.

Drinkability/Overall: An extremely nice all-occasion ale. I drank these for hours many nights in a row, sitting in the pub talking, or after a long walk on the windy coast. While this ale (and bitters generally) aren't blow-your-socks-off with anything particularly, this is a great example of the pristine balance you come to expect from the style. If you get the chance, definitely try this tasty and storied Welsh ale.

Pours a rich red colour with no head.

The smell is sweet, pretty weak.

The taste is sweet, caramel and a bit watery.

The mouthfeel is light to medium bodies with medium carbonation.

Overall a very mediocre beer, not terrible but won't buy again.
