The foam was wheat in color (2 fingers high), frothy, lacey and stuck to the glass. Smell was rich and aromatic with hints of fruit. The color was deep red, almost carmel. The taste - rich and aromatic, complex, a hint of carmel and hoppy. It's mouthfeel was smooth and deep. Drinkability was good.

Pours black, some ruby hues when held into the light. One finger beige head, low retention, but long lasting sticky lace.
Smell is not so strong really. Surprisingly subtle roasted malts. Nuts, dark chocolate, faint toffee and raisin.
Taste is stronger than the smell, with nice burnt caramel, milky chocolate, molasses, not extremely sweet, but just enough. It's crisp from some nice juicy plums, dark grapes and figs, also citrus zest, which keeps the nutty earthiness from the nose way in the back. Sweet coffee towards the finish, along with some German hoppiness (tiny hint of metal too).
Medium carbonation, velvety smooth. Warm alcohol. Clean almost dry finish.
A great refreshing doppelbock, lacks the "heaviness" of others and is really quite tasty.

330ml bottle. Snifter glass. Very dark brown color, deep ruby tints to the light. Light beige froth shows good retention. Caramel & sweet toasted malt aromas, chocolate & extract of licorice hues as well as notes of prune & dats to the nose. Creamy & roasted upfront. Medium to full body. Moderate carbonation. Dense texture & silky palate. Chocolate & licorice all over. Sweet toasted finish & fruity aftertaste with hints of burnt malts. Good job !!

500ml Bottle from Beers of Europe (£2.69):
Dark brown with a finger-sized, foamy head that is tan brown & holds well with some nice lacing too.

Sweet & loaded with caramel malts and chocolate notes upfront. A typical bock aroma but a good one at that with some figs and prunes coming through alongside a few subtle hops.

Sweet with strong caramel malts that mirror the nose well, along with some lighter chocolate & darker fruits that include some prunes, figs and raisins. There is also some roasted malts & the beer is quite rich with a hint of bitterness & a warming, boozy finish.

Smooth & full bodied with light carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel that goes down well. There is a lot of sweetness to this one although it manages not to overpower or completely dominate things thankfully and there is a touch of bitterness at the end.

Very filling and chocolaty beer with a fair amount of sweetness. Smooth with a good combination of roasted and sweet malts & although some was noticeable, the alcohol content was well blended with the beer & came as a welcome addition in this case.

A - slightly darker than your typical bock out of the light; a dark brown more akin to a stout than a bock; yet under the light there is a distinct ruby hue to the beer. Really nice head (three fingers) which filled the rip of my stange with a nice eggshell color. Very attractive beer.

S - Smell was not overt; malty with a hint of molasses; a very earthy smelling beer. Not the deepest smelling bock, but solid.

T - not an overly complex taste, but a very nice malty taste hinted with dark fruits, molasses, and an almost coffee-like ending. Unlike some bocks, which err on the side of sweetness, this Asam-Bock is quite balanced and remains so throughout the entire beer.

M - slight carbonation, really great texture and thickness, slight residue of sugar.

O - to be honest, a really great beer. For those who enjoy a sweeter bock, this will not be your cup of tea, for those looking for a nice mix of sweet fruits and depth, this is definitely a beer you'll want to try. Definitely a re-drink.

Poured from 500ml glass into 400ml Radeburger branded seidel.

Appearance: Pours a dark amber-brown color with a large brown-tinted white head that dissipates slowly and yields some small spots of lace.

Smell: Sweet caramel malt is dominant with plum notes and just a hint of grassiness.

Taste: Begins with plum and grape flavors, rounding out to sweet caramel and brown sugar. Finish is still mostly sweet with more bready notes.

Mouthfeel: Thicker body with light carbonation and a slick finish.

Overall: A great doppelbock- surprised I have never heard of this one before. Worth it.
