From: Friar Tuck's, Savoy, IL

Glass: Ayinger Willi glass

Weltenburger's Barock Dunkel is a fairly rich, substantial Munich Dunkel Lager, boasting noticeable chocolate and toffee-like sweetness alongside a balancing European hop bitterness. Compared to others, it has a fuller, more chocolate flavor compared to Hirter Morchl and Capital's Dark, which focus more on the toasted nuts and toffee sweetness of the style.

Pours a 2.5cm head of dark tan foam, mixed small, medium, and large-sized bubbles resulting in a swiss-cheese like appearance. The foam gradually subsides to a thin ring around the perimeter of the glass. Significant lacing is left, mostly large stripes and lines, along the glass' sides. Body is dark amber brown out of the light, lighter amber brown when looked at through light. Carbonation is steady and visible, from the base of the glass.

Aroma of burnt malt, cocoa powder, light toffee, chocolate syrup, with a hint of lingering smokiness to the charred grains. Not incredibly complex, and could be stronger, but still pleasing. My perception of the aroma may also be due to the age of the bottle.

Front of palate picks up some minor-key milk chocolate under dark malt sweetness. Mid-palate notices continued milk chocolate, charred malt, toffee, and a mild bitterness to help things balance out a bit, though the sweetness, roasted-ness, and chocolate-ness are dominating components. Back of palate detects charred malt and cocoa powder buried beneath roasted and brown malt sweetness. Lingering aftertaste of bittersweet milk chocolate, a mix of chocolate and brown malts with some European bittering hops.

Beer is medium to medium-light bodied, with medium-high levels of carbonation that foams the beer up substantially on contact with the palate. Resulting mouthfeel is at first fizzy, then smooth and creamy. Finishes wet, with little residual stickiness around palate or lips.

500ml bottle. Mug. Bright amber color, clear appearance. Yellowish, creamy foam creates a rocky crown. A thin & lasting layer remains on top. Floral, crystal malt aromas & chocolate hues. Crispy upfront with slight sweetness & moderate toasted flavors. Light body. Moderate carbonation. Dense texture & spicy touch. Gentle chocolate, dry nut & bitter cocoa flavors in the middle linger into a dry bitter/sweet finish. Well balanced & easy drinkable beer.

(on tap at Brauhaus Schmitz - poured in dimpled mug... possibly not entirely clean, like last time)

A: hazy, reddish mid-brown... scant foam - open, sudsy bubble structure

S: fresh-ish brown bread with a minerally, toasted grape skin (mild raisin) note

T: lightly chocolaty and roasty... caramelized wood.... mild brown bread crust... malty over bitter, but a clean, polished sort of malt... almost an herbal overtone - an earthy, dried-leaf vein through it

M: fairly light and marginally smooth with a bit of a carb bite on the back end.... perhaps a tad too flat and dry?

O: I suppose fairly flavorful and a touch more complex (rough, ragged) than usual for a dunkel

This pours a clear, dark amber color with a slight, foamy head. The aroma is inviting with toasted malts and hazelnut tones. This is highly drinkable with a smooth texture and a decent sweet grain taste that is perfect for the style. Very well made and delicious.

A - nice burnt sienna with a ruby hue when put to the light. Mild head (two fingers), eggshell white with a little residue.

S - Nice toffee smell with distinct malt and hop scents; a little too predominant but not by much. Fairly nice aroma.

T - Starts with a sweet caramel taste and transitions into a more malty middle and a slightly bitter hop hint at the end. A slight hint of raisins perhaps in the beginning also. A little more malt would be the only major improvement.

M - Not overly active but certainly not stale. A little more carbonation would be preferred, but the body is comparable to your average Dunkel.

O - the bottle claims its "das Beste Dunkel der Welt"...certainly an overstatement, but not an utterly gross exaggeration. This is a very good dunkel, well worth the drink, and although there are better Dunkels in Germany, it is a nice and balanced beer with pretty even overtones for the most part.

good not great. not as October as I wanted it to be, but still a tasty brew, quintessentially german in every way. the pours is clear for the genre, lacey on the sides of the glass, with a deep ruby color and a nose of german amber malts and lager yeast. it smells also like warm fermentation for a lager, a little acidic and funny for some reason, but not unattractive. notes of lager yeast and semisweet amber come though, toffee in the finish, with not quite enough hops to balance. yeasty and bold flavored, I wish it wasn't quite so sugary on the back end, but a drinkably dark german beer with a lot of character. decently carbonated, a little bland in the mouth, but a good beer overall, especially for the price.
