Poured from 500mL bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: crystal-clear deep amber-brown hue with two fingers of creamy ivory foam. It looks nice to me.

Smell: fruity and grainy malt aroma. Plums, pears and prunes all make an appearance. Quite nice.

Taste: light and grainy; slightly fruity. Flavor tracks well with the aroma, though with more emphasis on grain than on fruit. Quite nice.

Mouthfeel: rather light body but a nice level of carbonation. A refreshing consistency.

Drinkability: quite drinkable. This has the good quality of being a light yet flavorful session beer.

The most well-balanced beer I've ever had. Easy to drink, yet sweet, nutty, and hoppy. You can't beat a well-balanced beer!

Wow what a nice pour!A medium brown with a reddish tint with a huge foamy head that sticks nicely to the glass, aroma is very cracker-like with a touch of cocoa but just a touch.A very clean tasting beer lightly sweet and grainy with a touch of iron and a hint of clove. Now this is a beer to drink for any occasion clean but satisfying and just enough flavor to make it interesting a real winner.

Appearance – This one was brown with a reddish hue and a fairly big head that didn’t show much retention.

Smell – The malts were very sugary here. I could pick up some caramel and sweetened molasses as well.

Taste – The malt was much bigger at the taste. The molassess also came out big. The finish was extremely sweet, almost fruity.

Mouthfeel – This Dunkel Lager is light to medium-bodied with some subtle carbonation and no bitterness.

Drinkability – This is not my idea of the style, but it wasn’t bad and definitely drinkable.

A: Deep chestnut.
S: Malt and molasses.
T: Round, deep, toffee'ish
M: Smooth
O: Nice example of a good deep spicy and interesting German beer.

The label is marked with 'World Beer Cup - Gold award'. Well I've no idea what that is, but if it is as the name infers, I'm not hugely surprised.

Aroma: Dark crusty bread aromas with a light toffee note. Faint floral hops.

Appearance: A light copper colored beer with very good clarity. The tan head is made of long lasting fine bubbles that leave a moderate lacing on the glass.

Flavor: Medium amount of dark Munich malt flavor bringing toast bread crust and hint of cocoa without any sweetness. There is a mild caramel note and a slight sweetness, against the the moderate hop bitterness the balance is about even. The finish is medium with an aftertaste of crust bread malt flavors.

Feel: A medium bodied beer with a softness on the palate. A medium-light level of carbonation.

Overall: A dark malt dominated lager with notes of dark crusty bread and a hint of caramel yet with little sweetness making for a balanced beer.

Made on premises. Served in a glass mug at the Kloster.

Clear dark reddish brown with a tan head. The head has very good retention and leaves plenty of sticky lacing.

Aroma: fine roasted malts with an overtone of hops.

T: quite malty; sweetand bitter in balance. Light herbal hops.

M: medium-light carbonation seems about perfect. Medium body.

O: A flawless albeit straightforward Bavarian dunkel. Make the pilgrimage.

Rasins and mollasses in both nose and flavour, some burnt toast. Creamy and raisiny palate, with some nice burnt bitterness in the finish, some roast, slightly sticky and sweet, pleasant dunkel however it couyld be a little less sweet and could with a touch less of that mollasses flavour.

Decent Dunkel Lager. Coffee and caramel flavor. Easy to drink, not too much carbonation.

This beer has a brown clear appearence and a fast disapearing head. The aroma is light sweet and vegatal. There is a light toffee aroma.

The taste is soft and malty. the dark malt ad a caramel taste and a sticky sweetness. The taste changes into light toffee and cappuccino flavours.
The after taste is changing into a light bitterness from dark malt.
A nice soft and mild beer.

500ml bottle dated 26.01.02. I didn't notice when I purchased it but this is one old dunkel.

Served cold, poured into a pint glass, it has a great amber red color with excellent clarity. The creamy head sticks around a good long time but slowly settles leaving a sheet of lacing on the glass.

Aroma is sweet and malty with bready yeast and orchard fruits.

Flavor is rich and spicy with a strong malt backbone to support the lightly roasty and bitter flavors. The caramel and toasted nuts are a nice compliment to the beer.

Mouthfeel is medium-light in body with moderate carbonation. Very well balanced from start to finish. Sweet up front with a bitter spicy finish.

Overall, this is better than expected. I don't know if the age helped or hurt this beer but it's still pretty solid even after almost 8 years.

Burnt sienna tops with a healthy stack of beige.
Nose of burnt honey and molasses, interrupted by rusted metal and rude minerals.
Begins toasty, bread flaked with bitter chocolate. Expands towards butterscotch and caramel, but is cut short by the same sense of machinery as clued by the nose. Salt and calcium, iron, and rust. Rides out with astringency, without noteable hop contributions.
Light bodied, but too coarse to be drinkable.

Weltenburger Kloster Barock Dunkel
Code: 12580736

Appearance: A frothy head the color of sand dies down to form a 3 mm cap over a mainly clear, deep ruby accented dark mahogany brown body. With each sip a wall of lace forms as you tilt the glass back, breaks apart, and then leaves behind a ring of craggy lace as you set the glass back down.

Smell: A gently roasted malt expresses notes of dark baked bread crust, chocolate, cocoa, and wood. Only some minor grassy hops are found.

Taste: The nose indicates the flavor spot on. It starts with dark chocolate and warms to display some of the sweet cocoa and toasty breadiness. The grassy hop notes appear every now and again; and it's supported by a firm bitterness. Some smokey, roasted notes linger in the finish along with a bit more of the bready maltiness.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and remarkably smooth with a moderate, very-fine bubbled carbonation that gently caresses the palate.

Overall: An interesting, if not particularly complex, well polished and rounded lager. Charming to say the least!

exp 10.4.12

A: No head, pretty dark, no visible rising carbonation.
S: Really smokey, funny smoke flavor. Burnt beans!
T: Smokiness is there but translates more into a nicer toasted sort of flavor. Rather pleasant for a rauchbier. Inoffensive. Very smokey which dominates the flavor, but the malt underneath is fairly neutral. Very earthy
M: Unnoticeable. Little carbonation.
O: Pretty good for a rauchbier.

Poured three fingers of head on a clear, dark amber colored body. Looks great.
The aroma is of grain and hay, like a barn.
The taste has a strong malt profile with some moderate pine bitterness at the end.
The texture is a little sticky with moderate carbonation.

On tap at Haus Staudt, 0.5 liters served in a big ol' stein.

Pours a translucent medium brown color with a nice off-white head that leaves thick foam and excellent lacing.

Sweet malty aroma, fairly nutty and toffeeish. Smells pretty good.

Flavor is great. Sweet caramel malt, toffee, brown sugar, nuts, and toast.

Medium-full bodied for the style with a smooth and slick mouthfeel.

Great, great dunkel overall. Really surprising. A beer even worthy of "Barock" Obama (although I hear the prez prefers Bud Light, that sellout).

Now this is what I am talkin' about! The beer has a nice chocolate presence that is balanced out by some rich prunes, a light nuttiness all on a nice sweet pils backbone. Really outstanding. The mouthfeel is very rich without being too thick and the carbonation is simply perfect creating a full rich body. On the one hand, I'd like to describe it as so thick I need a spoon . . . but on the other hand, it finishes very light, not quite crisp, but certainly on the lighter side.

Basically, it is a near perfect beer. It is complex without sacrificing drinkability, rich and full without being too thick. Basically, this is why I drink beer. So good.
