Part of the sampler and the second of seven I tried from Triumph on June 24th, 2003. I would have tried it either 4th or 5th in the order, but I followed the advice of the bartender and the way he laid them out. I'll know better next time.

Poured a red amber color that you would expect with a small head and fair lacing.

Aromas mostly of malt with very subtle hints of red fruit, wheat, and hops. Definite improvement over the Honey Wheat.

Taste of roasted malt with medium body and decent mouth feel. The taste and body were just a cut above average. I would have to say that overall this is a good Killian's but definately not a great Red.

First had: on tap at a friend's house

A simple well-rounded brew. Poured clear amber, moderately carbonated with a thin white head. Not much distinction in the aroma: basic malts with undertones of floral hops. Decent balance of malts and hops in the taste. Nothing special, just an average amber. Light-medium mouthfeel, and easy to drink.

Samples at the Triumph. Pours amber hue with a lively carbonation. Aroma is of cherry, caramel malt, and citrusy hops. The body is medium and quite smooth. Flavors are dominated by citrusy hops with some caramel malt and ripe fruit in the background. Long, dry finish. I’m not sure what is this brew trying to represent. .

The appearance of this beer was truly lovely, a beautiful amber with a nice two-finger head and good lacing, but everything sort of went downhill from there.

It smelled and tasted very sweetly grassy, with some bitterness, some earth, and a hint of caramel arriving in the taste. Mouthfeel was smooth with a relatively light body--overall a beer that tastes good but lacks any sort of defined character. Good with a burger.

Appearance- nice rich amber look with a decent white head

Smell- small hoppy scent with some malts thrown in

Taste- lackluster, hoppier than other amber ales I've had but not that great in taste

Mouthfeel- exactly like an ale, medium bodied

Drinkability- went down easily enough, but I was expecting more from an amber ale from this brewery.

Triumph "Amber Ale"

Triumph's notes:
"Brewed in a Pacific-Northwest style. its sweet malty taste is balanced with a generous helping of Cascade hops."

Appearance:
Nice clear, ruby amber in color with a big, creamy head that slowly falls leaving a thin white ring. Looks a little too much like fruit juice I think.

Aroma:
Sweet hopes soaked in a thin metallic character that seems to pervade all of Triumph's beers. It just smells like processed iron, yuck!

Taste:
Bitter hops have a strong, grassy character to them and some simple herbs. Malt sweetness finishes off the drink. One-sided, but otherwise enjoyable for such a standard 5% abv red ale.

Mouthfeel:
Medium-bodied with decent carbonation punching through.

Drinkability:
Of average drinkability. The lack of complexity seriously hurts this beer as it has really nothing extraordinary to offer.
