On tap in a pint glass right where its brewed.
Dark caramel with amber highlights in color with about a finger's worth of off-white colored head. The cap retains well and leaves behind a hearty spray of lacing.
Aromas of citrus and hearty caramelized malt. Some pine and sweetness.
Flavors come from an English IPA base, hopped with citrus and pine. Some grapefruit bitterness.
Medium body with a strong malt backbone. A touch sweet, side door hop bitterness.
It's malty, a little sweet, and brown in color - but it still checks in as IPA, leaning toward the English style.

On-tap at Artisan's Brewery & Italian Grill, Toms River, NJ
A: The beer is crystal clear amber in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a short off white head consisting of large bubbles that died down, leaving only a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of biscuit malts are present in the nose along with notes of caramel malts and slight hints of pine resin hops.
T: Like the smell, the taste is dominated by flavors of biscuit and caramel malts and has slight hints of pine resin malts and associated bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a little watery on the palate with a low to moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer doesn't have much hop flavors or bitterness for an American IPA, much less a "West Coast IPA'. The beer was rather malty for the style and I tasted a lot of malt extracts.

Aritsan's West Coast IPA
Appearance: Served in a 16 oz pint glass. Came out with about 1 finger of off white, nearly tan head, just enough to disperse the aroma as I examined the beer. Darker than most IPAs, especially west coast. Borderline brown, like sweetened tea colored.
Smell: First to hit you were the breaded malts. Not a lot of hops in the smell. Sweeter smelling than most IPAs, there were certainly citrus and faint grapefruit/pine notes in there somewhere
Taste: A balanced taste, semi-sweet with a good bittering hop up front. Got solid pine flavors with citrus right away. This gave way to the malty sweetness on the backend, with a finish of bitter and breaded.
Mouthfeel: Standard for the style. Good carbonation, and lacing was prevalent for most of the meal i consumed this with
Overall: I thought this would be much hoppier, since they call it a west coast IPA, but it was lacking in that department. Though, I quite enjoyed this IPA, as it still had a bitter taste, with the sweet citrus tastes I mentioned. Balanced overall.

served from the tap in a 18oz mug.
I was suprised at the appearance, as it was quite dark. brown in color, with amber highlights. Aroma was earthy hops. Taste was balanced sweet caramelly malt and piney and earthy hops. Medium body and carbonation. Great lacing as I drink.
A decent beer, but I think totally mis-labeled as a "West Coast IPA". I would call it more an English style IPA. Much too dark, and where are the "C" hops?

Went here for the 3rd time and tried this beer. I am a hop lover and when I ordered this beer I expected to taste something good. When it arrived it had ZERO head, no carbonation and no taste. I asked the bartended what gives and he said "yeah its been coming up like that a lot" So they continue to serve this stuff? He poured me a new one and it had a little head but no taste. Like drinking dishwater. Nasty...

Appearance: amber in color with a 1" head that falls apart quickly. Some spots of lace paint the glass.
Smell: very light caramel sweetness and very little hop presence.
Taste: a bready profile with caramel, little hop bitterness, and mild lemon citrus tones. Did not fit the bill of a west coast IPA.
Mouthfeel: medium bodied. Lightly crisp throughout. Little aftertaste.
Drinkability: this beer did not live up to the category. One pint was more than enough.

I had this beer a while ago, maybe 2007 or 2008. Not hoppy for this style. Ours was not hoppy at all. Not much malt flavor. Somewhat thin mouthfeel. Not really much of anything. We ordered a pitcher, drank 2 beers and left the rest. Not a good beer at all.

They call this their West Coast IPA.
a - Rich Amber color, no head. Served in a tall and thin pilsner glass which is suspiciously small. No carbonation apparent.
s - Hard to nail this on in a busy restaurant but it wasn't jumping out at me. There were some American hops but other than that, not much going on in the nose.
t - Well balanced IPA on the low end of IBU's for the style. American hop flavors melt into a basic malt body. Not bitter. Tapers off quickly leaving no flavor behind, not real dry or syrupy in the end.
m/d - Way undercarbed but not bad. I wouldn't call it an IPA if it weren't for the ABV, Needs to be more in your face for the style. A solid but easily forgettable beer.

I got this one at the Basil T's Brew Pub in Toms River on 1/28/2008. They served it to me in a standard American pint glass. When I was there, they called it West Coast IPA. In their beer menu, they said that this beer has a 6.2% ABV. The beer was a dark amber with a thin head of white foam that dissipated into a thin white film and streaks of white lace. The aroma was faint with fresh fruits, orange spice, and a spatter of citrus hops. The taste was dry and bitter with citrus hops, pine needles, grapefruit, and toasted biscuits. The mouthfeel was medium bodied, dry, and bitter with an aftertaste of dry citrus hops and pine needles. The aftertaste did linger on for a few minutes. This beer was by far the best one I had at Basil T's Brew Pub. This is also the only one that didn't have problems with it. It's a good thing it's a year round brew. If there was one beer that made go back, this would be the one.
