Equal parts red and brown in the color, a head that was mostly pink, but lacked retention big time. Aroma was sugary. Non descript berries.

Taste, whoa way too sweet. Sugar over fruit impact going on here. So much so it just gets too far away from things like malt, hops and yeast that make a beer a beer. Highly carbonated.

Another blast from the past, sometimes, you don't even need to refer to your notes when it stands out so much, but alas for the sake of completeness and accuracy:

Reddish brown pour, looked kinda cool, purple to pink head. Aroma was very sweet, not putting me off quite yet. Truly did smell like berries (marionberries what are those?). Wish it was more like Oregon blackberries this time of year.

Taste, ugh, sweet, not enjoyable. Not like beer. Not balanced. Its just like fruit juice. No hops or malt (well some of that), just berries. Nothing to appreciate here, and the price $6 didn't help things.

Appearance: Clear copper in color, with a modest head, which soon fades away. There are modest streams of slow-rising carbonation, and very little lace.

Aroma: Berry aroma vies with the malt for supremacy, the result is pleasing.

Taste: Light berry flavor, with a slightly vinous character, beneath there is a solid malt presence. Overall, the taste seems ephemeral. The finish is clean and dry.

Mouth feel: Fairly full, crisp, with slightly aggressive carbonation.

Drinkability/notes: Pleasant and very drinkable, a pity that it is no longer available. Many thanks to Hardtarget for sharing this rarity.

Note: Using the new Retired Beer review feature, this was written last year (04).

Bottle inspection: Dusty, but no date. 70’s style label, ingredients and specs typical of Rogue.

Aroma: Red berry and amber malt meld nicely. Very fruity

Appearance: Clear red-amber body with a dirty cotton head that collapsed from a froth leaving a respectable cover, collar, and lace.

Flavor: Burst of fruit, cherry, raspberry, red grape, I guess marionberries. Unfortunately there is a cardboard taste that I fear is from the age of the bottle. I’ll adjust, but still a hit given no date on the bottle, and I just bought it today. Given the flaw, it is a tasty beer. The fruit is full, but not overly sweet. The malt gives a nice depth to the flavor, but I can’t get any peppery hops taste from the Saaz.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, heavy mouth coat that leaves me smacking.

Overall Impression: A tasty beer, I expect no less from Rogue. The age is a factor, but I’m not at all disappointed with this purchase, but I’m not aging the other bottle long.

This one was a medium brown, slightly cloudy beer with a short head.

The aroma was of berries, with a little maltiness thrown in. It was OK, but not the most well balanced of fruit beer aromas I have ever smelled. Too much fruitiness.

The taste of slightly sweet malt with berry overtones. The fruit promised in the nose was more balanced in the taste, but it just didn't seem to fulfill its potential.

Appearance:

A mostly still cloudy honey brown in color with a half inch white head.

Smell:

Lambic in nature, with hints of cherry the predominant fruit characteristic (label says Marionberries were used in the brewing, but I've never heard of them…).

Taste/Mouthfeel:

A short sharp berry tang greats the tongue at the outset followed by a rather bland, unremarkable beer. Not so much bad as it is disappointing. Not worth another look.

Not sure if this is the same as I was poured at the brewery. On tap, it was called, "Hascupberry" and was just awful. It poured a deep reddish brown and the smell of berries filled my nose, but that was the highlight of this fruit beer. The taste of berries was there along with a strong bitter and sour taste on the palate. It was a puckering feeling in the mouth and I wanted to spit it out. Not my cup of tea with this fruit beer!
