I found this 650ml brown bottle at Sal's Liquors in Addison, IL. I've tried a lot of stuff from Rogue, but never saw this one before so I brought one home. I find it strange that the name is Mom's Hefeweizen but the Rogue website says it's a Belgian blonde ale. It's brewed with rose petals for the mother in all of us.

The beer poured a slightly cloudy golden yellow color with a huge 3-finger white head that lasted awhile and produced some good lacing.

The beer had an herbal and citrusy smell to it with a touch of rose petals - not very hefeweizen-like.

Herbal and spicy with a little sweetness from the wheat malts. There is also some lemon and orange citrus underneath with a bit of bitter orange peel taste from the hops. The spice may be clove, but there's no banana flavor at all, so it doesn't fit the typical hefeweizen profile.

It's not bad, but if you're expecting a typical hefeweizen, this isn't it. I would like to hear why Rogue is naming this beer Mom Hefeweizen, but then lists it as a Belgian blonde ale on their own web site. It doesn't make any sense. Those are two completely different styles.

Light to medium bodied with medium carbonation.

OK, it is refreshing, but if you are searching for a style category, you will be disoriented. It is a little hoppy and thin for a hefeweized. There is a certain funkiness (maybe the Pacman yeast) to the nose as well. Oddly enough, the towering head is rather bitter. Here is where you will find the rose petal. Take a big gulp of the head and see for yourself! The color is good and a little cloudy. The nose is a little weak for a wheat beer, especially a hefewiezen. But it's not terrible. The taste is mildly sweet with a rather grainy dry finish. Body is light and bubbly. The bottle I had was a bomber. The large bottle prohibited a single pour to add the yeast to the pour. This left the first serving light and the second serving heavy. Lots of floaties in the sediment. The beer improved after the addition of the sediment, too. More body, silkiness but overall still a little rough. It's an interesting beer, but I think they are trying to do a little too much with a style that is better when brewed right up the middle. Every beer does not have to be a home run. A one-run single is pretty good and accomplishes the same thing. Try to brew a hefeweizen that rival Sierra Nevada's or one of the better German hefe's. We all would applaud that.

Poured from the bottle into a Sam Adams perfect pint. I don't have much respect for Rogue to begin with so I poured this ultra aggressively. Only got about a finger and a half of head. The body is the color of a dehydrated person's urine. Always a good start.

Smell is generic. I'm not getting any rose petal. Nothing stands out.

Taste is actually pleasant. This is an easy drinker, but it just tastes better than your average ale.

Not a standout mouthfeel either, but proper for the style.

Overall, Rogue has once again proved they don't deserve my money. Oh well.

A - Came out a little too carbonated and fizzy for a hefe. Color is a little cloudy, but also kind of clear like a lager. Different than from what I was expecting.

S - Smells like a good hefe. Has that wheat smell. Advertised that it's brewed with Rose petals.... but I couldn't get the aroma.

T - Light crisp, and refreshing. Nice taste for a hot summer day.

M - A bit on the bubbly side, but also full going down.

O - I guess I was expecting too much. Couldn't really taste the rose, and I felt it was lacking the qualities of a traditional hefe. Still pretty good though.

A 2 finger head sits on a clear golden brew, slowly shrinking leaving nice lacing behind.

The nose has wheat and a very floral smell. There's a sweetness there that reminds me of honey.

Wheat is in the taste, light spiciness, not really a clove thingy, nor banana which I half expected. Just some light spiciness that maybe comes from the rose petals? I'm thinking the sweet notes come from them..

Medium bodied, nice level of carbonation.

In the world of Hefes, this doesn't really stack up but it's a nice enough brew to drink.
